What is my consultant likely to ask me?

Hi all,

I'm just over 20 weeks now and I haven't actually seen my midwife since my booking in visit - I am due to see him the week after next.

He (my midwife) was very nice and I spoke to him about my fears - one of which being prolapse. I have a pretty mild-moderate prolapse of my bowel and what I think is my bladder which became very noticeable after my second birth, and was probably there after my first.
I did see a few people at that time, but was told until it's at a stage to need surgery they weren't going to do anything much to help so I left it, and with luck things have improved.

During this pregnancy it's been noticeable since the beginning and with standing or walking for any longer than 10 mins. At my booking appointment my midwife mentioned I could see a consultant and left it as that. I didn't realise he had made an actual appointment for me, anyway I'm due to go in a few days.

This sounds stupid I know, but what happens at these appointments? My ultimate goal was really to ask for a cesarean because I am utterly terrified of making things worse (it's not something I've mentioned yet) - but I don't know if I'm just going to be examined and sent home or what. I really don't want to be dismissed again!

I'm afraid I can't help with specifics but at consultants appts I've been to for various things I've made a little list of questions or worries I have and make sure I come out of the appt with everything ticked off and feeling happy that I'm informed and in control.
Hope that's helpful?

hi, i had an episiostomy and 3rd degree tears with my first birth (some of us have all the luck) which resulted in a similar rectal prolapse (i THINK) this is what you mean! sorry for tmi but this basically means if im constipated/have hard poo i can feel it through vaginal wall.

i saw a consultant about this and it is something that can be corrected with surgery but i was advised to wait until i was done having kids & to treat the symptoms using "laxido" if necessary (safe to use long term and inpregnancy). in fact at 34 wks my digestive system is better than its been in years and things are ok.

i am under consultant care anyway and like you thought that a previous traumatic birtb injury would be an automatic section; however, i am assured a second vaginal birth is unlikely to cause further damage and this time is likely to be easier anyhow.

im still quite scared about the whole thing to be honest!

feel free to pm me if you dont want to talk about your bottom in graphic detail like i have!

ps once you have had a hideous birth you wont have to fight anyone to get a c section if thats your preference. iv been lucky to now have an obstetrician who had a similar experience to me first time round and a good second birth so helps me look at everything more open mindedly x

Thank you both.

Twinsplusonesurprise - Yes I'll definitely make a list of all the questions/worries I'd like answered. It's something I've really wanted to discuss properly for a while now so I have all kinds of things going through my head and I'm not the best at verbalising my thoughts.

Ilovekittyelise - Yes that's exactly the same problem I have! Blush

I had 2nd degree tears with both births, my first child came out with his arm raised over his head after hours of pushing due to my contractions coming to a halt, and the second was 9lbs 5 so I'm sure that didn't help :(

I am rather scared with this one too, I think I just want to know a cesarean is a possible option for me really, although I'd rather not have one if I can help it! I think the fear of making things worse is the biggest issue for me, glad to hear vaginal birth doesn't necessarily do further damage phew

Thanks for your help, and also the Laxido recommendation!
