Baby is in breech & oblique (diagonal) position - anyone else had this? What do I need to know?

I'm 36 weeks now and baby has been in this position for a while. I'm booked in for a CSection at 39 weeks.

I don't know anything about this position, my last baby was head down

. The midwife said it's nothing to worry about as I'm having a csection. Is there anything I need to know? What if I go into labour naturally before the csection?

Hi,

I'm exactly the same, little lady has been breech oblique for ages, apparently they get comfy and don't like to move when in this position!!!
I'm booked in for a section on Monday but the hospital have told me if I feel any niggles before to get down immediately! Has the hospital offered to try and turn your baby? I refused but apparently my placenta is in the way!!!

My first was not breech so new experience for me!!! I'm just scared she'll arrive xmas day!!

VoodooChimp · 23/12/2013 22:01

How many weeks are you going2bamum? I hope your baby holds on until next week :)

No they haven't offered to try and turn the baby, just said a csection would be best option - but I've had a previous emergency csection so I guess there may be risk factors due to that??

I'm 38 -1 now but I'm worried as I had my first at 36 -6. So any time !!!!!!! I'm guessing that as you already a section it's the safest option. They won't do elective sections before 39 weeks ( apparently) but I'm just worried that it will turn into an emergency if I start and labour quick !!!!!!! Ooooh the joys !!!!!!!

What dates your section booked for?

VoodooChimp · 24/12/2013 12:37

My section is booked for the 13th January. DD was a week late so I've no reason to think this one will be early.
I spoke to midwife this morning and she confirmed what you said about going straight to hospital if any twinges or loss of water or blood. It's a little bit scary isn't it?
She also said to monitor baby's movement and if it seems reduced to go straight in Confused

I had to go to the hospital this morning for my bloods taking? ( no idea what though) yes I am scared ! It's a waiting game isn't it ? Nurse was nice this morning and reassured me about the section!!!

Well good luck ! Keep in touch !! Will let you know how I get on Monday !!!!!!! X

am the same wee madam is frank breech??? have another scan in two weeks time (ill be 38 weeks then) if still breech they for taking me in the following week!eek! this is my first tad scared but excited. they also advised me to not hang about if i think labour has started. also offered to have baby turned but refused. good luck ladies fingers crossed for u all Smile

Shellywelly1973 · 24/12/2013 18:14

Did any of u consider trying for a vaginial birth?

Are you first time mums?

I'm 35 weeks baby still breech. I'm dreading a c/s if she doesn't turn. But it's my 6th so I'm very hopeful she will turn.

Shellywelly1973 · 24/12/2013 18:16

Obviously my question was for ladies with breech babys!

tgamble13 · 24/12/2013 18:21

a vaginal breech birth was discussed as an option however doc didnt recommend it and tbh i dont fancy it either! too many complications for my liking

Gowaygoway · 24/12/2013 18:23

Both of mine were breech as I have a heart shaped uterus. First one planned c section at 39 weeks. All fine. Second was planned for 39 weeks again but my waters broke at 37+6 so straight to hospital and emergency section the next day as I went into full on labour.

My hospital don't encourage/offer vaginal delivery of breech babies as they don't have any midwives confident to deliver them. Apparently the skill has been lost over time as more mums opt for a section.

Shellywelly1973 · 24/12/2013 19:07

Gowaygoway the community mw said exactly the same thing. Such a shame as it will be very difficult for me to manage the older dc & driving etc.

But to be honest the idea of delivering a baby in hospital/ stirrups/ monitoring/ epidural is so awful I will probably just go for a c/s as it's the lesser of 2 evils!

I've only got to 39 weeks with one pregnancy out of 5. Two at 37 weeks & two at 38 weeks. I wonder if that would be taken into consideration when organising c/s dates?

VoodooChimp · 24/12/2013 19:25

Good luck for Monday going2bamum!

My hospital actually offer VB of breech babies in the right circumstances.

But not recommended for me as I've had a previous EMCS which is an additional complication.

Also I don't think VB would be recommended for me anyway, as baby is oblique (it's lying diagonally across my stomach with head under my ribs on right hand side and bum by my left hip) so I'm assuming unless it shifts head or bum straight down it would be impossible to achieve??

Shellywelly AFAIK they won't offer a Csection before 39 week due to risk of breathing difficulties for baby. God knows what they'll do in your situation though. Would you have baby manually turned if it was offered?

Voodoo no matter your history with an oblique baby it has to be a c/s.

I probably wouldn't due to risks of ECV. Also I need to organise the older dc so if anything went wrong with the ECV it would be an emergency c/s.

I know if I have a normal vaginial delivery I will be able to do the school runs the next day but a c/s means weeks of recovery.

I really don't understand people who think a c/s is easier!!

Gowaygoway · 25/12/2013 06:45

Shelly Don't worry too much about the recovery. I was worried second time as I also had a nearly three year old to look after but recovery was better than the planned section!

I was gutted when I found out number 2 was breech again but had to accept the safest method of delivery (although I was still a moody cow about it!)

Good luck!

Foxeym · 25/12/2013 09:32

My DS was oblique, laying diagonal across my belly. I had him by CS and it was fine, it was my 3rd CS so I knew what to expect. My consultant said the more children you have the more chance of transverse or oblique babies as they have more room to stretch out!

scaevola · 25/12/2013 10:15

My DC3 was transverse/oblique until 39 weeks (and I was told too it's because it's roomier) but spontaneously put her head down just in time.

And yes, if there is no good presenting part (head, or some breech positions) then the baby is undeliverable vaginally.

ECV carries some risk, so wouldn't be considered if CS was preferred delivery route anyhow. If labour comes before planned CS date, they will need to assess the baby's position and, if still unfavourable, it will be straight to EMCS.

thehouseoflego · 25/12/2013 20:44

OP snap snap and snap!

Do you have a date? I'm going in on the 17th Jan.

I was having a ELCS anyway, consultant said to me last week, we can either turn this baby errr no thanks or leave it as it is.

Bloody uncomfortable, head under ribs and bum down by my left hip.
