Is January a really shit time to have a birthday?

DC3 is due mid January. For the purposes of being able to have a decent party with it's mates when it's 18 I am hoping it'll come later rather than earlier, but it may very well be early. All I can think of is reasons why it'd be rubbish to have a birthday in early January, when everyone has just spent a month eating and drinking shit.

So can anyone give me some reasons why it'd be good to have a birthday in the first couple of weeks of the year. As it stands I will be forever apologising for it being born on such a shit day, but I'm thinking it would probably be better for me to tell it why it's such a great time to be born. If only I could think of some actual good reasons.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance...

My DS is early Jan, people tend to give him money because they thought he'd had enough toys over Christmas. Never been a problem, when he was little I'd buy him stuff with the cash and now he's older he likes the money as he clubs it all together to buy something big.

Mine is the 12th I've loved it and loathed it at various times. It doesn't bother me much now though, I'm not one for going out. Its nice after the busyness of Christmas to spend some time with dh

DawnOfTheDee · 23/12/2013 19:37

DD's birthday is 24th Jan. DD2 is due on 22nd Jan. Me and dh have sex once a year...."Darling....it's that time again......" Grin

I did worry about crappy birthdays tbh but there's pros and cons to any time of year. YY to being able to afford more expensive pressies by getting them in the sales. And they're far enough removed from christmas not to suffer from joint pressies.

Also it's quite nicely placed in the school year so no worries there either.

Congrats btw! Smile

DSis is Dec, as is DD1, I'm the end of January, along with my grandmother and DCuz's DD1. snow can be good, although I had a birthday cancelled because of snow one year which wasn't great (grew up in North of Scotland), down here I like the idea of a birthday trip to the pantomine (definately doing that for DD1 one year). Presents tend to be a bit shite unless your family are organised and buy them in December (I buy all birthday presents in December for birthdays through to the end of February to avoid giving shite sales stuff) but I think persuading people out for your birthday is easier than for pre-Christmas birthdays.

Being in the oldest half of the school year is good, DD2 is a summer baby and there's a big difference. DS was planned as an October baby (but was an early Sept baby, so glad he wasn't a week earlier). I don't think any time is perfect TBH.

glassofwine I was going to say this. My birthday is 5th of Jan and I grew up in Australia. Summer BBQ & pool parties are THE BEST. Especially if it rains! Something soooo cool as a kid about being out in the pool in the rain. Grin

SpawningSalmon · 23/12/2013 21:19

But please please don't ever buy joint Xmas/bday presents. That is the WORST thing about Jan birthdays. Especially when you see everyone else get the same thing just for their birthday later in the year.

babsie007 · 29/12/2013 16:19

My birthday is January and that also my dd due date!!! Hope
She doesn't arrive in the day of my birthday as she will get all the presents... Envy

Probably a cheaper time of year to hire function rooms for big birthday parties

My friend was born in August and always hated having a summer birthday because her friends were often away on holiday and unavailable for parties....

Boring practical consideration - but, in terms of school, autumn and winter babies often cope better with infant school than children born in the summer, who are still very young when they start.

It's a bit of a rubbish time to have a birthday - everyone is partied out after Xmas, or ill, or broke, or detoxing. The only good thing is presents. If people go out with a budget of £X to spend on you, they will get a lot more for their money in the sales after Xmas. I've received some lovely gifts that I am sure would not have been affordable outside the sales.

It's a bit late for you to do much about it now though!

clary · 29/12/2013 22:29

OK my b/day is in Jan. It is a big one next year and I was late-ish sending out invites - but everyone (almost) said oooh great, yes for sure we can come, nowt on in Jan (apart from one person who said no, they had a Christmas party that night ??!!)!

So in that sense it's better than Dec when everyone is busy!

Also money goes further for pressies in the sales :)

DameEdnasBridesmaid · 29/12/2013 22:31

My DD is 7th January. It's a crap time for a birthday. No-one has any money left, her friends could never afford to go out with her and she ALWAYS gets friends unwanted Christmas presents as birthday gifts.

She blames me Sad

sonlypuppyfat · 29/12/2013 22:37

DDs and my bday is in January its rubbish if you have the day off work its too cold to do anything and kids party's are awkward too all stuck inside!

SomethingOnce · 29/12/2013 22:44

I was going to say it's a good time, making a child not the oldest but far from youngest in the school year.

Plus the not having a birthday during the holidays thing!

SlinkyB · 29/12/2013 22:53

Ds was due 18th Jan, dc2 is due 21st Jan (ditto with doing the deed once a year Dawn...!).

I think January birthdays are probably better than Christmas birthdays, and I will ask family for vouchers for the kids. Then in the spring will take them to Toys R Us and buy summer/garden/outdoor toys so the gifts are spread out throughout the year Smile

DowntonTrout · 29/12/2013 22:56

My birthday 4th Jan.

DDs birthday 5th Jan.

Mums birthday 9 th Jan

DS birthday 18th Jan.

I would say the later in January, and the further away from Christmas/New year, the better. Mine is a bit rubbish, I try to make DDs better though. She is considering having a half year birthday in the summer instead.
DSs on the 18th has always been ok.

AlwaysDancing1234 · 30/12/2013 01:25

I think it's nice to have something to look forward to in January after Christmas is over. I have a few family members and friends with early/mid Jan birthdays and they actually quite like it. Not had any trouble arranging parties either (one is an adult now so had 18th and 30th etc). I think it's actually better than having a December birthday like me which is just before Xmas and much harder to organise parties or any meals out etc!

hobbjobb · 30/12/2013 08:42

My bday is 6th jan. To be honest, the only good thing I've found is that as a child I could ask for big presents that combine the two Grin

But I do find it being 12 days after Xmas and just after nye that no one has any money to celebrate and everyone is partied out by then.

But, there's nothing you can do really so no point worrying.
