Chickenpox and Christmas

We've just found out that my 2 year old niece has chickenpox. I'm currently 28 weeks pregnant and my mum can't remember if I've had chickenpox or not.

I'm now not sure what to do about Christmas Day, as we are all supposed to be having lunch together at my parents' house.

Should I stay away? My mum has already made me feel bad by saying the children (my niece and her brother) are very upset about the thought of not coming over for Christmas. I know my 2 year old would love to see his cousins too. In my hormonal state I am feeling incredibly guilty about ruining Christmas for everyone but at the same time obviously don't want to take any risks.

Any advice gratefully received.

ask your mw, they may be able to check your immunity with a blood test.

having said that, at 28 weeks the risks are very small as the baby has already developed.

Definitely stay away if your mum isn't sure you've had it. Although the stage you are at yes isn't the most dangerous for baby pregnant women have lower immunity. Therefore it could make you very very poorly and baby could be ill if early. You have nothing to feel bad about I promise and you are definitely NOT over reacting.

Thanks, from what I've read online, it does seem that the risks are quite small at this stage. I will call my midwife tomorrow but I'm not sure they'll be able to get my immunity tested and give me the results before Christmas! Would be great if they could though.

Cross-posted with brettgirl2 - thanks for posting, I didn't think about the lowered immunity side of it.

Someone I know cared for a just birthed mother with cp on an intensive care ward. She died Sad . This is not in the 'does schloer have caffiene' and 'can I have a glass of wine on christmas day?' category of christmas dilemma.

My dd had cp while I was preg but I had definitely had it so it was different.

ilovepowerhoop · 22/12/2013 15:13

surely the niece should stay away rather than you, as she is the contagious one. You are not ruining christmas for anyone and I wouldnt go to an event where there is a child with active chicken pox when I wasnt sure of my immunity status

ilovepowerhoop · 22/12/2013 15:16

according to nhs there is a higher risk of complications if CP is caught after 20 weeks.

Thanks everyone for the responses, you've made me realise it's just not worth the risk and we'd be better off doing lunch separately this year.
