Baby measuring 5 days ahead... Is she gonna be HUGE? Help!

Hello all mummies and mummies-to-be,

So I felt reduced movement a few days ago so went to get monitored and she was slightly tachy cardic at the beginning and then not very active for the rest of it so they sent me for a growth scan as they were worried she might be little. I am 29 weeks.

Everything was perfectly fine with the scan apart from she's in fact measuring 5 days ahead... Does this mean I'm gonna have a big baby?? First time mum and only heard horror stories about very large babies! I have to go back in 4 weeks for another scan so do you reckon if she is still measuring ahead I could request that my due date is changed? Also has anyone had any similar experiences and know any reasons why she's measuring ahead?

As always any help would be kindly appreciated!

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas too!

5 days doesn't sounds much, I wouldn't worry. The measurement scans aren't very accurate in my experience anyway. I know several people who've been told they're having a large/small baby for dates (to the point where they've had extra scans and been advised to have csections) and have gone on to give birth to perfectly average sized babies.

That said, I know when you're a first time mum especially, it's so hard not to worry about everything that isn't going 'textbook'.

They won't adjust your due date.

Merry Christmas! Please don't worry!

5 days?? No, she's not going to be huge.
If it was 5 weeks ahead I'd be concerned.

They won't change your due date. There is a reason they base the measurements on a 12 week scan and not a later one ( because there is less normal variation in size at that stage) The due date is just a guide anyway, she could arrive at any time a few weeks either side of that date.
Later scans are notoriously inaccurate at predicting birthweight, can be out be several pounds. They'll want to monitor that she is growing properly if there have been concerns about reduced movements, that's all.
Try not to worry.

I think 5 days is within their margin of error. I'm measuring more than 3 weeks ahead - DD1 was a big baby and this pg is pretty much identical so I'm expecting another biggie but that's fine.

Also try not to focus too much on your due date - best to think of the 2 weeks before and 2 weeks after as your 'due month'. Different people have different lengths of pg and sizes of baby.

When you consider some babies are 2 weeks overdue and still normal size, 5 days really is nothing to worry about.

I measured 2 sometimes 3 weeks a head and was all bump, totally solid. Was expecting a big one as dh is very tall and I'm not short either, had ds a week early and he was normal height and weight.
Ds is a big boy now thou, going thru clothes very fast.

I'm not sure how thy worked out 5 days? I thought, by this stage, that measurements were given as centiles, not dates.

I'm big and a 28 week scan has put the lump (aka baby) at the 90th centile. But he's normal, just big. And no, sorry, no changing of edd's allowed!

5days is nothing to worry about. Each of my 3 have measured further on for dates. I've had 3 babies of normal weight but they have all been long. Currently mytwins are mmeasuring a wk ahead of my dates and it's the first time I'm inclined to think about moving my dates but I'm waiting to see what Mondays scan has to say.
Try not to worry 5days really is nothing

I was told I was having a big baby and had to have extra scans etc later on as I wanted a water birth and they thought I might be at risk if he was too large a require a caesarean but he was born at a very reasonable 7lb 4 I'm not sure if the fact he's quite tall made a difference but he wasn't huge, I was worried though so I understand!

Rachelx92 · 22/12/2013 09:40

My friend was measuring 9 days ahead and was told her baby would be big. Her baby was born by c-section weighing 8.6lbs. When people hear their baby might be big I think they assume they're going to have a 12 pounder come out!

flowerpotgirl12 · 22/12/2013 11:35

I wouldn't worry, I was measuring 2 weeks ahead at 28 weeks and asked mw if likely to have a large baby, she said no and that I was still within normal range, at my 32 week appointment was only measuring a week ahead so evened out a bit. mw said not to worry is common in pregnancy. There would be no need to change your due date tho.

Extra scans with DS1 who was supposed to be 98th percentile at 34 weeks; born very healthy 5 weeks later around 10th percentile. I really don't believe in size estimates.

SolitudeSometimesIs · 22/12/2013 22:06

I'm currently measuring 2 weeks ahead - I'm 39 weeks on Weds - and my baby's weight is estimated at 7lb 9 oz at the moment. I'm not worried. The scans are notoriously inaccurate, even the specialist who did the scan (I was getting a very detailed scan due to a different issue) was saying there's a huge margin of error.

Relax, you won't be giving birth to a toddler Grin.

I get my measurement scan at 20 weeks so don't have a fixed due date yet, but at all the scans I've had baby has been a couple of days ahead of what I think she should be - I was 8.9lbs and DH is 6'4'' so I have no illusions about what is coming my way.

My mother has had two very positive birth experiences and I'm told my brother's head was quite a bit larger than mine - just try and stay positive, a few days really isn't cause for concern and I'm sure you'll be fine!
