Am feeling very sorry for myself. Just finished work for a two week Xmas break and I've got the lurgy on day 1 of the hols :-(.

What can you take for a cold? I'll stave off paracetamol until/if I get a headache/fever but can you use olbas oil or vicks? My nose is completely blocked and I'm asthmatic so not enjoying this already.

Very minor unimportant moan I know so sorry but feel gross! 22+4 dc2. Thanks :-)

I have exactly the same thing, went to boots today & they recommended olbas oil, vicks and putting your head over a bowl of hot water.
Good luck!

Saline drops are good for dissolving nasal blockages.

Cariad007 · 21/12/2013 18:42

I find that a hot shower helps as the steam opens nasal passages but it's only temporary.

bebopanddoowop · 21/12/2013 18:47

Manuka honey!!

bebopanddoowop · 21/12/2013 18:51

To expand on my over excited post there - I had a horrid cold last week and was so frustrated about not being able to take loads of drugs for it like I would non pregnancy, til my ma told me to buy Manuka honey and now I'm totally converted. After a day or 2 of having 3 honey and lemon drinks a day I was pretty much better! It's expensive stuff but def worth a try

Shellywelly1973 · 21/12/2013 18:52

bebopanddoowop silly question but what do you dowith the honey?

Ive had a cold for 2 weeks. Ive lost my sense of taste & smell!

MyNameIsWinkly · 21/12/2013 18:53

Jakeman's lozenges (the black ones) are good for clearing your nose and sorting sore throats too.

RiojaHaze · 21/12/2013 18:54

Plug in vaporisers are brilliant for through the night. Calpol do one and it's a necessity in this house.

Cariad007 · 21/12/2013 21:14

Manuka honey is supposed to be amazing and seems to be a cure for a lot of things. My dad once had a nasty fungal toenail infection and tried lots of treatments befor a cousin suggested manuka honey. He was doubtful but duly smothered his big toe in it and after a few days the infection was gone! Then I read on here somewhere that a woman tried it on a bit of her c-section scar that wasn't healing and the honey cleared it all up. Makes me wonder if it would work with healing ahem, more sensitive areas but that might be a bit sticky!

Hellymummy · 21/12/2013 21:28

Do not use olbas oil, I got told off my midwife not to use it! Just gotta be natural remedies xxx

Rhianna1980 · 21/12/2013 21:39

I bought Sterimar from boots it's pregnancy friendly . It is basically sea water nasal spray to wash your nasal cavity. It is excellent . Speak to your boots pharmacist about it .

Thatsnotmyfigure · 21/12/2013 22:56

Isn't Olbas oil natural? Have so got fed up with stinking cold

bebopanddoowop · 22/12/2013 04:27

Shelly - you can eat it however you like - just straight off a teaspoon, I prefer to make a hot water honey and lemon drink so I get the steam and vitamin c too!

The reason it's so medicinal is something to do with the bees that produce it feed on sap from the Manuka tree and that has medicinal properties (anti biotics or something) as you can tell I don't know the exact facts but there is some science in it not just hippy talk Grin

schokolade · 22/12/2013 05:31

Be careful with assuming natural = good for you and your baby. Plenty of natural things are not (lead, anyone?).

Herbal remedies often carry no warnings because they have not been tested, not because they are wonderful with no side effects. "Natural remedies" are chemicals, just the same as medicine (that has been tested extensively!) and should be treated with due care.

Chocolateteabag · 22/12/2013 06:42

I totally recommend a NeilMed Sinus Rinse - basically a squirty bottle and saline solution.
It is the same salt content as your tears - squirt up one nostril and the gunk from your front sinus chamber comes out the other.

It's the same principle as using a Neti pot - which has been done for years.

You can get them on Amazon for c10-12 or in most big chemists. One box with 60 sachets and the bottle lasted me 2 winters and haven't had a bad cold since I got it.

Chocolateteabag · 22/12/2013 06:43

And you can get Manuka honey in Aldi for £4.50 ish

comfyonesie2 · 22/12/2013 14:09

I've been using olbas oil. All seems fine.

nomoreminibreaks · 22/12/2013 14:13

Have you tried breathe right strips? I've been quite stuffy during pregnancy and these have helped a lot at night.

dats · 22/12/2013 17:04

This might sound completely ridiculous but...
I had a dreadful cold (12 days solid! Angry) at 13 weeks, right as I was going to Cornwall to stuff face with cream teas etc and lost all sense of taste. The only thing that helped clear my nose and restore taste was running up and down the stairs a few times! Combination I think of change in air pressure and maybe just getting the blood pumping a bit. It didn't always last but did give me a bit of relief when I was desperate! I also know its the last thing you probably feel like doing! It'd be harder now, but I'd still try I think! Hang in there, totally sympathise!
dats, 22+5

I'm the same, got the lurgy just as finished up work for Xmas. Definitely recommend the calpol plug in vaporiser - I could actually feel it unblocking my nose the other night. Hot honey and lemon is good and also try sleeping propped up slightly as I find being horizontal makes it worse.

Hope you feel better soon - I'm 25wks and already peed off at not being able to drink for Christmas, let alone feeling crap too!
