Best maternity pads?

I've got ages left to go only 22+3 but got a boots voucher to use up. Is it worth buying boots maternity pads or is there a better brand? Last time I only remember using mothercare so have nothing to compare to.

I used Boots and Tesco and I didn't notice any difference tbh.

laura2323 · 20/12/2013 20:48

I used tesco own. They were lovely and comfy on my stitches (3rd degree tear) too, plus no leaking, even with very heavy bleed

Cariad007 · 20/12/2013 21:39

This is probably a stupid question but are maternity pads any different to the usual kind of thick pads? I'm guessing thinner ones like say, Always Ultra won't do?

GreatJoanUmber · 20/12/2013 22:21

Caria, they are about the size of a single mattress Wink much longer, thicker and wider than even the most absorbent regular pads. And initially you do need them, even though I personally swapped back to regular pads after 1-2 weeks.

theborrower · 20/12/2013 22:42

Caria - I think another difference is that they don't have a top weave or something like that, which could, ahem, irritate or stick to your stitches. I think.

You will bleed A LOT after giving birth. Get millions :-)

rachyconks · 20/12/2013 22:45

Boots & tescos ones both good. Avoid asda own brand.

Also, however many you think you will need, multiply that by 5.

fluffandnonsense · 20/12/2013 23:01

Tenna Lady! Seriously! Most maternity pads don't have wings so you leak everywhere. Tenna are more absorbent and bigger.

RedRobin1 · 20/12/2013 23:38

Another vote for tena lady after a lot of recommendations from other mums

mumbaisapphirebluespruce · 20/12/2013 23:44

Agreed get some incontinence pads they are very absorbent. Better still buy the ones that are actual pants with pads built in and then you just throw them away! No washing.

ZenNudist · 20/12/2013 23:44

Boots ones shite. They bunch upon the middle so you bleed on your pants. I liked asda own brand the best. Boots do some uncoated thinner maternity pads with wings which are useless at first but good for lighter bleeding later on.

MrsGrasshead · 20/12/2013 23:47

I'd go for Tena. I had water leakage and the maternity pads were useless. Just seeped through in seconds. DH had to drive 10 miles to the chemist to get me some Tena pads (meanwhile I was stuck on the toilet).

MrsFlorrick · 20/12/2013 23:54

Natur care ones. All the others had all those super absorbent chemicals in them and made my very sensitive down stairs hurt like buggery. They are bulkier looking than the super absorbent lot but you don't seem them under clothes and they absorb loads without irritating. Boots and super markets sell them. Good luck with your LO. Grin

AnythingNotEverything · 20/12/2013 23:55

I had Asda's own and they we're fine. I moved on to normal sanitary towels after about five days.

Buy cheap knickers and just chuck them. You may bleed a lot.

daisywaisydoo · 20/12/2013 23:58

Tesco's and made sure I made good use of the free ones whilst I was in hospital.

And might have made my boyfriend keep going to get me more..

snapple21 · 21/12/2013 12:38

Don't use always etc / they're often scented and not good for a healing perineum. Basic thick pads are best.

WeeTeaJenny · 21/12/2013 12:43

I preferred to use Always Ultra Night time towels with wings as with the maternity pads I felt as though I was rustling about and they are very thick. I felt like I was wearing a nappy! x I didn't notice a difference between the pads or Always for rubbing against sore bits as I think whatever you wear will rub / sit against your bits ? x

princesscupcakemummyb · 21/12/2013 14:14

tesco maternity pads are fab

SicknSpan · 21/12/2013 16:06

I used a normal long nighttime pad like a supermarket version of always, with a maternity pad on top. This meant that I didn't have nasty scented products irritating my poor bits, and my knickers were protected if I leaked over the maternity pad (quite likely as I was a gusher - think "there she blows!")

SicknSpan · 21/12/2013 16:06

Btw I found Boots own fine, stock up!

Shellywelly1973 · 21/12/2013 16:25

Anyone know of a good maternity or sanitary towel fir people with very sensitive skin?

After all my dc I ended up so sore from the actual pads. With some of the dc I bleed for 6/7 weeks. Absolutely dreading going through that again.

Felyne · 21/12/2013 16:32

Get the thick mattress type ones especially for the first days. I had Boots ones I think. Having all that extra padding makes sitting easier especially if you have stitches.

Cariad007 · 21/12/2013 16:32

I was in Boots today and couldn't find where they keep maternity pads. They weren't with the regular pads and tampons - are they with the breastpads and nipple creams etc instead?

Shellywelly1973 · 21/12/2013 19:44

Yes Cariad. In Boots/ Superdrug/supermarkets- they all put them with the baby stuff.
