Slightly pink steak…

I know pink meat is on the forbidden list, but I've just been at a Christmas dinner at a restaurant and didn't realise the steak was a bit pink until I was halfway through it (it was very dark and I was hungry!).

I'm aware it's probably fine but I felt the need for some reassurance! It was hot and firm/cooked right through, just a bit blush right in the centre.

I think as long as it's hot you're fine. I believe it's a toxoplasmosis risk which is super rare anyway.

I've had medium rare steak tons of times in both pregnancies and never had a problem. HTH :)

All you can do is avoid it where you can. Don't beat yourself up for it

As long as hot and seared properly on outside you would be fine, with whole cuts like steak any bacteria is on outside so a bit of pink in middle should be ok, it's really burgers or minced meats that need to be cooked thoroughly as bacteria can be all way through product.

Inglori0us · 20/12/2013 20:42

It'll be fine. Don't worry!

Sure I read somewhere that toxo is really rare in beef anyway, I think lamb and pork is a bigger risk.

Thanks guys. I just had a wobble and needed the hand holding! Flipping hormones...

Yup toxo is only in lamb, steak is low risk really Smile

radiatormesh · 21/12/2013 20:25

Have you ever known anyone who ever got sick from eating slightly pink meat? No. Shows you how rare it is. You're fine.

[Although I understand. I freaked out with #1 when I ate a Boots sandwich which didn't expressly state that the mayonnaise used cooked eggs...I think that thread is probably somewhere in the mumsnet archives...]

HandragsNGladbags · 21/12/2013 20:26

Mar5is totally right, I ate well done steak only with DC1. Now on DC3 pregnancy and eating it medium rare.

Mabelandrose · 21/12/2013 20:46

But the risk is about getting toxo, not food poisoning...

HandragsNGladbags · 21/12/2013 20:52

But the risk is on the external part of the steak, where the bacteria lives. So if it is seared then the bacteria is destroyed.

That's my understanding

Mabelandrose · 21/12/2013 21:29

I don't think that's the case handrags. Tommy's have an excellent resource on it.
