Over active thyroid and pregnant HELP!

Hi,

A rather frustrated upsets person here. Just been diagnosed with an over active thyroid at 9 weeks pregnant with second child.

Just to explain, I had my ds1 2 years 2 months ago and I lost a lot of weight post birth and went to he doctor and he said my levels of thyroid were higher than normal but still within in range, why he didn't get me to come back I don't know, I guess he looked at my history of anorexia (10 years) and told me to eat a few more biscuits! Sensitive!

I amazingly fell pregnant first month off pill despite weighting 7st 5lb (hence some confusion on my dates, should be 10 weeks but midwife said uterus was measuring smaller) and at bookings appointment she said she was worried about my weight and would book me in for extra scans to measure baby's growth and also send my bloods to check thyroid. A week later and HAPPY BL**DY CHRISTMAS I get a letter saying I need to see doc urgent as I likely have an over active thyroid (t3/4 measuring 23.5 and 7.2 and tsh measuring trace!). All doctor has done is refer me to consultant which will take 2-3 weeks because of Christmas. My heart rate is faster than normal but clearly not high enough to prescribe beta blockers.

Now I'm sat here sh*** g myself that this is causing me massive damage and my unborn baby damage as this first trimester is bad enough for the poor little one. im desperate for support or info on others experience as I've got to twiddle my thumbs for 3 weeks (my hospital is useless as no first scan has even come through yet!)

Thank you for any help or advice :/

I haven't got any help or advice I'm afraid but didn't want your post to go unanswered.
Sending you lots of hugs and sympathy! I can only imagine how much I'd worry too in your situation.
Can you phone your midwife and ask them if your GP is not being helpful?

Can you phone the midwife? I'm under active and see an endocrinologist and am having regular bloods.

RoyMum · 20/12/2013 18:06

Hi thanks for replies :) I appreciate it. That's a good idea, I may just check that she has been updated on the info. I saw her a week ago at bookings and it was her that took my bloods and expressed concern over my weight. Without her I would be none the wiser! I'm not scheduled to see her till I'm 16 weeks, which by her dates is 6 weeks time. I just feel really abandoned. It won't be 3 weeks probably until I see an endo at the hospital, and i should hopefully have a scan around the same time. Perhaps the endo will request that I see her sooner than that, but like I say I'm not seeing the endo for another 3 weeks!! It seems a long time to be left in th dark with the only advice I've had to not consume too much caffeine!

Roymum sorry you are having difficulties. can I ask- were your t3/4 levels the other way round?

RoyMum · 21/12/2013 07:28

Hi :) they are whichever way they should be :) the one she was most concerned about was the tsh which measured trace! I don't understand what it means. I presume they investigate why ? I did the worst thing and googled...it keeps saying Graves' disease :(

I am under active thyroid but in medication my tsh measures trace (0.17) and my endocrinologist is unbothered. He would rather this which proves there is sufficient if not excess thyroid hormone than too little as baby doesn't make their own.

I am unsure whether this applies to over active but my non medically trained presumption is that it does.

Ok thanks. I find it frustrating that it wasn't explained to me. If you're right then really only the other measurements matter and they were only marginally high, perhaps that's why I wasn't put on medication straightaway. However it then doesn't explain why iv been unable to gain weight for 2 years only lose it when I eat like a horse!!

I had an over active thyroid and was told not to fall pregnant but i already was unbeknownst to me by the time they told me! I was only relatively over active and i was prescribed medication and monitored every month or so with blood tests. It is now back to normal since i had my DD. I was told my overactive thyroid was auto immune and probably just another auto immune illness i was susceptible to (basicslly if you have an auto immune illness you can have others sometimes) it sounds scary but my auto immune illness hsve been minor and not lasted long. I too thought i had graves disease and i didn't!
Basically phone your midwife and express your concerns but i will say that for me personally it was never a major issue and the medication stabilised my thyroid levels quickly enough. Obv i cant speak for everyone, but for me snd my baby it was not a problem. Do consult your midwife though to put your mind at rest if you cant get an earlier appointment.
