I'm currently 14 weeks pregnant and have had horrendous coccyx pain - particularly bad when I get up in the morning or if I've been sitting down. GP thinks it is because I have a long difficult labour with DS (plus ventouse which she thinks is the culprit) and now my ligaments have stretched it's moving around.

I've scared myself by foolishly googling coccyx pain and pregnancy and it's a bit frightening i.e. if it's as a result of childbirth you coudl be in for a rough ride.

I;m going to a physio on monday but has anyone here been through this?

I had pain after dd2 for about 3 weeks I was ok if moving but I couldn't stand still for any time without pain. It made queuing in supermarkets impossible so DP had to do all the shopping

the weird thing is I didn't have this pain after having DS (I did have back problems but they were unrelated). But pretty much as soon as I got pregnant I got these horrendous shooting pains down my left leg. I'm terrified it's going to get worse.

I had sciatica (not sure of the spelling) during pregnacy with dd2 that was pain in my hip and shotting pains down my leg. I was under the physio for it, but to be honest it didn't really help. It was only when I gave up work (as a gardener, -very phsical) that I didn't get it as much. Mine gave me exercises to do but when I reached a certain stage (about 30 weeks I think) she said I could no longer do them.
It didn't give me any problems during childbirth and I no longer suffer from it.
Sorry not to be more positive but as far as I know it is not a long term problem for most people

BTW I would resist the urge to google any health related subject as you (I) always focus on the worst case senarios and can get worked up / worried about nothing.

thanks albatros - I know you're right about not googling. It's just so early on that I'm struggling with the idea of having this amount of pain for such a long time plus the implications in childbirth.

I had exactly this at about 13 weeks. Morning sickness had just passed and then I got this - I was a wreck. Had a very distressing few hours on the internet and then I decided to treat it just as I would any other sports injury - i.e. strengthen the muscles around the ligaments to support them. I started gentlly and worked my way up to a reasonably decent half hour routine which I do every day. The pain lasted for about the first two weeks, although it started getting better from the very beginning. I haven't had it at all since (am now 19 weeks)

I would think a physio should be able to help you design a safe exercise routine.

I had that after DS1's birth (very long and with forceps)I went ot quite a lot of (expensive) chiropractic with it then asked GP to refer me to physio which sorted it out.
Soon as I got pregnant again though, it came back and had to be referred again - this time to the obstetric (sp?) physio which was really helpful.
Really feel for you - it's no joke

sounds boring but i swore by lavender oil after a hot bath gave loads of relief. had it after both my girls were born labour was all in the lower back, lavenders a natural anti-inflammatory. worked for me good luck.

is the coccyx the bone at the end of the back?

sweetkitty · 05/08/2006 21:25

Had this from 15 weeks with both pregnancies, coupled with SPD and SI pain, a real pain in the ass (literally) saw a physio too but no real help, disappears after the baby is out thankfully. Hot baths helped a bit too.

Had it after ds was born, couldn't sit properly and felt bruised for weeks and occasionally still get sore around there, after a long car journey for example. Didn't suffer nearly as badly when dd was born although had similar fears to yours. Both got a bit stuck during delivery, ds was a ventouse and dd kept sliding back so had to be, er, manually helped along while I pushed, so think my coccyx just didn't flex as well as it is supposed to. Tbh found that constipation particularly during pg with dd aggravated it - so that may be something to be aware of - and also got sciatica but haven't suffered much since.

the bone moves during pregnancy

LIZS · 05/08/2006 21:39

In my case I don't think giving birth horizonally or being continuously montiored with ds helped.

bubblerock · 05/08/2006 22:10

I had it for about 18m after having DS2 - very easy natural birth. It was always worse when sitting at the computer. Hurt like hell but seems to have disappeared (touch wood)

MargotLedbetter · 05/08/2006 22:14

I had coccyx pain after ds1. thought to have been caused by the ventouse delivery. I could not sit on a hard surface on my bottom with my legs out in front as if i lent back a tiny bit it hurt like hell - so could not do sit ups either. It also hurt if i 'pushed' as in the pushing you do giving birth iyswim but not during the birth just after and i felt i cold not try for another until it was sorted as i would never be able to push the baby out! Drs kept telling me it would sort itself out in time. AFter 12 months i got referred for physio that really didnt help much after 2 months of weeklkly physio and was then referred to a pain clinic. I discovered i was pregnant with ds2 when ds1 was 15 months old so could not have the steroid injections suggested. The pain subsided during my pregnancy and i had no problems giving birth to ds2 natually. No pain after at all. Midwives suggested that my ligaments and another birth had 'pushed the problem bits back as they should be again'. So no specific reason for sudden healing just possibilities!
