Following D+C

I had a D+C for a misscarriage just over four weeks ago. I was told that my period would return in 4-6 weeks it is now nearly five and no sign of it.

Yes I have had unprotected sex in the meantime. Didn't think aftr everything my body had been thru I would really get pregnant. I stupidly took a test b4 I was due on and I saw a VERY FAINT second line. This line has steadily got stronger but still not very obvious. I have stomach aches and discharge and slight nausea (but not sure if that is just down to nerves) It feels as if I am about to come on but i don't. On Saturday I had a slight (And we are talking VERY slight) bleed - you bleed more from a paper cut. Thought it was the start of my period but nothing happened. It didn't get heavier. It just stopped. Had another "Show" on Monday but nothing since!

People say to wait and do another test in week. That seems so long off.

Should I just wait till the six weeks is up and then do a test?

If I am pregnant will it affect the baby being so close to the time I had the operation.

I'm SOOO confused and think I'm going to go MAD!

I had a D&C after a m/c in 2003 and found that I did ovulate that cycle, but a week later than normal so my cycle was a week longer than normal. It does vary a lot from woman to woman though -- if and when you ovulate after a d&c will affect when you can expect a period. IIRC the advice then was probably 4-6 weeks (as you have been told) and to go back and ask for medical opinion if no period after 8 weeks.

You could be pregnant, yes -- and I know people who got pregnant the cycle after a d&c with no period in between and the baby was just fine. Or it could be that your hormone levels are just taking a while to go down after the miscarriage (this is less likely after a d&c but not impossible). Or it could be that they didn't remove everything during the d&c so your hormone levels are continuing to go up.

Really, I would wait until the 6 weeks are up, test again, then either go to the doctor then or wait another two weeks and go to the doctor. I can appreciate that it is maddening in the meantime, though, especially when it's such an emotional time anyway.

hi hun
d+C wont affect baby at all..what it effectively does is give the womb a bloody good cleaning which makes a lot of people more suceptible[sp] to getting pregnant quickly afterwards. They suggest you wait a month before ttc again as it makes dating easier from last period but there is actually no problem getting pg before. I would wait again to test or buy a more sensitive test. How soon is the line coming up???? Just be wary of evaporation lines as sometimes when trying we will ourselves ot be pg so much that those evap lines can be very convincing.

DogMum · 20/07/2006 15:38

Hi workingmumnhs. Sorry to hear about your loss. Perhaps you could try the First Response early result test, available from Boots. It's more sensitive than most as it's designed for use slightly before period is due.

workingmumnhs · 20/07/2006 15:39

had a few evap lines. Just looked like indentations in the strip but now they are looking more pink or maybe I'm imagining it.

I swear I'll go mad if I don't find out soon.

Want a blood test to know but I have to go thru my GP for that. Would be V embarassing to turn up at the hospital and not be pregnant at all.

Thanks DogsMum.

I did try one of them and it came up negative but that was a week ago and still no period so maybe i was too early with that.

I took a test soon after the D+C and it was negative so I knew all the hormone had gone. The last test was yesterday and there was a faint pink line. or i think it was pink. I think i'm seeing things now

OK, if it was negative just after the d&c then I think that means you are probably pregnant. Congratulations! Give it a week and if you're still getting positives go to your GP -- in view of your history they may be able to get you in for an early scan (not much point doing it now as there'd be nothing much to see even if everything is going perfectly).

workingmumnhs · 21/07/2006 07:13

Thanks for all your support. I will try my best to resist doing anymore tests for a while. It doesn't help my sanity.

There is nothing I can do about it now. If I am pregnant I'll know soon enough. Worrying will just make me worse and the baby will come out a nervous wreck.

I'll let you all know the result either way if you keep an eye on the posts.

Period arrived today. At least I know now. Thanks for all the support. Hope you all enjoy your pregnancies and all the best for the future.

Bump

Don't know if you are all still watching this but that period has stopped again. I was one lot of blood and went brown and is nowhere to be seen now. I took another test and it is definitely positive. More so than ever. I can't deny it this time. What is going on?

does sound a bit weird, best to see the doctor and ask them, i had a d&c a while back and know that periods can be quite erratic after, but the positive test seems strange - can you call the unit where you had the dc and ask their advice?

DogMum · 22/07/2006 15:49

Hi workingmumnhs. I don't think the tests give false positives. As it's out of hours, it might be worth giving NHS direct a call and telling them about the bleeding. They might just advise you to see your doctor on Monday, but at least then you can stop worrying until Monday.

workingmumnhs · 22/07/2006 17:04

I work in a gynae unit next to the Early Pregnancy Unit. That is where I had the D+C they are as confused as me. They said the bleeding may be implantation bleeding and isn't uncommon but still worrying. I am off on Thursday so I'll go and see my GP then. The EPU unit can't treat me without his input anyway. Just didn't want to go up there if i wasn't 100% sure. The test today was definitely postive. More postive than before so I am having to seek medical help I think. As the tests get more positive it is likely it is not another miscarriage but still scared.

I'm sure your doctor will be able to set your mind at rest, workingmumnhs.

bubblebell1 · 24/07/2006 14:20

i know its difficult when ppl tell you not to worry, i am 11+4 pg and when i was 6 weeks i had a similar experience, i was told to wait 2 weeks and go back for a scan which showed an 8 week old feotus, dr then said after 2 weeks of no sleep and alot of tears that spotting is common in pregnancy and that most of the time there is no explaination could be from sex or erosion on the cervix:S i hope everything goes well and that they turn the light on the situation for you very soon

DogMum · 31/07/2006 16:34

Any news workingmumnhs? I hope all is well.
