Just wondered if anyone has used one of these and what they thought- they're not cheap but if they are worth the money I will look into it!

I'm a first time mum so sterilising and making up bottle feeds will all be new to me (and DH) so anything to help make our lives easier is welcomed!

Thanks

Are they those £99 all singing all dancing machines?! Save yourself the money and breastfeed with a few bottles as and when necessary. I would say 75% of the things of in the mothercare catalogue you might buy and use once and are a total waste of money and prey on first time parenta thinking they'll need that!

thehouseoflego · 19/12/2013 18:52

I like the idea of it, but frankly i'd spend the £100 on having a spa day without your DC several months down the line instead but that's just me

Making up bottles is the easy bit, it's the cleaning I found a bugger!

YouAreMySunShine271 · 19/12/2013 20:32

I love mine and it's a saviour for those nighttime feeds Smile I was abit unsure at first but as I had to give up bf after 10 weeks due to various reasons I can honestly say it's worth every penny!

thatstoast · 19/12/2013 20:32

I've got one but haven't used it yet (baby due in jan). I got mine in amazon's black friday sale for £48. If you're not due for a while maybe keep an eye out in january sales?

Anothermrssmith · 19/12/2013 21:08

If its what I think it is a friend of mine has one ad says its brilliant, she uses it all the time too. Planning on breastfeeding myself but it it doesn't work out for whatever reason I'll be buying one purely on her recommendation!

AnyFuckerWillDo · 19/12/2013 21:12

Breast feeder here so never tried for myself but a friend of mine is using one and says it's been fab

thehouseoflego · 19/12/2013 21:27

Just had a quick look £69 on Argos.

Cannotbelieveit · 19/12/2013 22:30

Mix fed til 4 months but had this machine from about a month in. Love it! Meant bottles were made freshly each time and safely too. Got mine for £50. Would definitely recommend. Am still going to try bf with dc2 due in April but know I have this if it doesn't work out

YouAreMySunShine271 · 19/12/2013 22:32

By the way it took us months to realise you can make 1or 2 ounces instead of the set 4,5,6 etc that the machine is set for! We ended up wasting loads of milk if we needed that extra ounce or two!

MrsLoveChristmas · 19/12/2013 22:43

Another fan here. One of the best things we bought. So handy for quick, properly prepared bottles.

Cannotbelieveit · 20/12/2013 00:03

How do you make up less than 4oz? When we got it DS was already on 5-6oz bottles

WorriedMouse · 20/12/2013 01:05

Breastfeeding doesn't always work out, Tomkat. When I first saw it my reaction was what a waste of money. Now, I wouldn't be without it. I got it on amazon for less than £50 but haven't seen it that price since. I would definitely recommend it and believe its worth the money.

Foxeym · 20/12/2013 09:06

My DS is 9 weeks and I make a couple of bottles up with boiled water before bed and measure out the milk into little containers and then it takes me about 30 seconds to tip the milk into the bottle and shake it in the night and saving myself a load of money, worth thinking about :)

PolkaDotParty · 20/12/2013 09:36

Foxeyem- the powder needs to meet water at 70 deg or above so your method carries a risk from the powder. Unless you keep the water at temp somehow?

cravingcake · 20/12/2013 09:44

My friend has brought one (on offer) in preperation for her DC2. With her first DC she would fill a flask with freshly boiled water before bed & take that upstairs with the bottles & powder measured out in little tubs. The water was kept hot enough that way, and if needed to be cooled she would put it in the bathroom sink while she had a wee or changed baby's bum. Slightly more faff than the machine but a lot cheaper.

I breastfed so didnt have the worry of bottles at night but i would just use the flask method if i need to this time.

Foxeym · 20/12/2013 10:24

Hi polkadotparty, I did check this with my HV and she said that as long as the water was pre-boiled it was fine to mix at room temp. I've done it with all 3DC and they have been fine. I use the water straight from boil and it then cools in the bottles and I only do 2 at a time so they aren't sitting around for too long.

NomDeClavier · 20/12/2013 13:43

Fox your HV is giving dangerous, out of date (if post 2007) advice. The risk is not frok the water

NomDeClavier · 20/12/2013 13:45

Argh! From the water but from the powder. The reason water should be pte boiled under 6m is to avoid toxic levels of chlorine. The powder can contain all kinds of bugs, including c. Sakazakii which has killed babies in the past and salmonella. Up to you if you make an informed decision about it but no way should any HV today be okaying that.

Tiredemma · 20/12/2013 14:41

I use a flask. Very easy.

DD appears to be find.

(15 weeks old)

Foxeym · 20/12/2013 16:09

Well it seems like I stand corrected :) I will be having strong words with my HV. I count myself lucky that all 3DC have been ok so far. The flask idea sounds good, think I'll give that a try!

Tiredemma · 20/12/2013 16:27

get some of these-
www.tesco.com/direct/tommee-tippee-closer-to-nature-milk-powder-dispensers-x6/130-2351.prd?pageLevel=&skuId=130-2351&kpid=130-2351

and a flask.

boil kettle.

pour water into flask and leave to stand for 30 mins (with lid off)

Then seal flask.

water will be warm enough to dissolve powder safely.

very easy

CranberrySaucyJack · 20/12/2013 18:21

Looks like a rip-off to me.

I'm sure you could get the same effect from adding a small amount of boiling water to the milk powder, and then topping up with pre-boiled and cooled water to the right amount and temp.

TheSkiingGardener · 20/12/2013 22:21

It does seem an expensive way to do what we do with two flasks, one hot and one cooled boiled water, mix powder with hot, top up with cold so right amount of water added. Has the advantage of being portable too.

RedRobin1 · 20/12/2013 23:59

I will be using the flask method as well. I find the prep machine a waste of money to be honest. For a simple thing like boiling water it seems a crazy amount of money to pay for one.

Also I don't have space on my kitchen surface area to add a prep machine in addition to sterilising kit and bottles and all the other baby stuff that will take over my kitchen!
