Any past/current Cholestasis sufferers able to offer me advice?

This is baby number 3, last pregnancy was 10 years ago and I believe my memory may have diminished ever so slightly since Grin

I had Cholestasis with both previous pregnancies which resulted in early delivery (37 & 38 weeks).

This pregnancy was diagnosed early December when I noticed the itching had gotten really bad one night. Bloods done, bile acids were raised at 41, dr called and I was asked to go in for monitoring and collect urso (meds). I am currently undergoing weekly bloods and ctg monitoring, plus growth scans every fortnight.

My bloods have declined and have been as follows; 41, 16, 12. The 12 was this week...However, my question is (because I cannot remember ever finding out my numbers last times) that the level as 12 is considered as a 'normal' level - even though the itching is still pretty damn horrific Sad

Does that mean that I will no longer be delivered early and will have to endure possibly another 10 weeks of this (if I go over my dates) I spoke to my midwife who didn't seem to know as she doesn't have a lot of women with this condition.

So, can any of you fellow itchy people Smile help???

Hello! I am being induced tomorrow due to cholestasis. I'll be 37+2. I have also been on urso which seems to have stabilised my levels (not sure on exact numbers though) and luckily it's got rid of the itching for me. The first time I saw the midwife at the hospital, she explained that they will deliver at 37 weeks if levels stay high or 38 weeks otherwise. I double checked with her and she said even if levels stabilise they will induce at 38 weeks regardless due to the risks, so I think you'll most likely be induced early!

Good luck and I hope the itching dies down for you. It's a nightmare isn't it Confused

Had this with dc2 but a while ago so memory bit hazy plus things may have changed but the whole point if the urso is to reduce the imbalances in your liver to prevent risk of stillbirth so your bloods just show that it is working but you still have the itching because you still have cholestasis. So no, surely the plan remains the same. My mw with dc2 was rubbish and I used to ring the hospital antenatal clinic and they were more clued up about it.

I have it too but no idea what levels are, only on piriton for it & only really suffer at night. Being induced at 38 weeks due to gestational diabetes anyway. Sorry cant be more help x

Thanks for your comments Smile

Because of Christmas my next appointment is not until the 27th. It does sound like induction at 38 weeks at the latest though...I hate to say it but I will be very grateful to have this baby out and not have this itching. They have confirmed she is growing well and have no concerns if she does need to come early.

As I understand it, you will definitely be delivered early once diagnosed and hopefully itching stops immediately. My ears and neck still itch!

Thought I would pop a little update on...

Consultant was not happy that my levels have (his words..) "shot up!" even though I'm currently on 750mg of urso, that I had to have steroid injection today in case baby needs to come Sad Sad Sad have to go back for my second one tomorrow and now am abs terrified!
Plus that injection hurt like fucketyGrin

Any advice on possible outcome? Am only 32 weeks Sad

Yellow it seems they are keeping a close eye on you, not much solace in that I know! I would imagine they are trying to get you to 34 weeks are you having any other regular monitoring? What are your levels now? Can they increase the urso?

yellowrose2728 · 27/12/2013 23:25

I'm having weekly bloods and ctg monitoring. Also a growth scan every 10 days. My level had gone to 63 today even though I've been on urso for three weeks.

Just worried that it's too early for this little girl Sad Sad
