High myopia and VB

Hello everyone, question is there anyone who gave vaginal birth with high prescription? I have -8,5 and -6,5. I did have laser surgery so can see fine now, but myopia does not really go away. In my home country with such high prescription usually you are not allowed to give birth naturally. You will be a candidate for c-section. I also had a retina tear at some point. It was all patched up. I saw a consultant ophthalmologist yesterday, who said all looks fine and I can have a natural birth. But I am a bit freaked out. As I would not want to loose an eyesight. Did anyone had vaginal birth with high myopia? thank you

I've never heard this before! my eyesight is worse than yours, and it's never been raised as an issue.

Thank you, did you have a natural birth or preparing for one?

Preparing for one. One been given the list of what I shouldn't do with bad eyesight (bubgee jumping, Rugby etc) and never had birth given as an example.

Wow, why wouldn't you be able to give birth with myopia? I've got -5.5 and -5 and astigmatism, the only issue with my previous two births was whether to keep my glasses on or not?

I am expecting Dd2 and I have a high prescription and high astigmatism. My midwife has never queried my prescription and my optician never mentioned it during my last check up. I also worked as an optical assistant for a few years and this is the first time I have ever heard this mentioned. However, I'm not sure if the laser surgery may make a difference, so maybe worth checking with midwife at next appointment.

I am a high myope - similar Rx to you & also an optometrist. I have never heard of high myopia being a contraindication to a vaginal birth. I had a retinal hole checked out by an ophthalmologist in my last pregnancy at 37 weeks & he had no concerns about routes of birth.

I think the theoretical worry is that myopic eyes have thinner retinas more vulnerable to tearing & that the pushing stage could cause problems but I don't know of any evidence that this is really the case. For what it's worth I had a 4 hour stage 2 that needed forceps in the end & retinas remain fully intact & healthy!
