Baby's heart beat.

I'm 10 weeks pregnant and found my baby's heart beat tonight for the first time on my fetal heart monitor. It seemed really slow though.
I thought it was meant to be about 120-180bpm. It was only about 70-90. Is this seem normal?

Most likely you have found yours not the babies.

Writerwannabe83 · 17/12/2013 18:57

Sounds like you probably heard your own heart beat.....

Please be wary about the use of such technology in these early stages. If trained and competent midwives struggle to find heartbeats at 16 weeks then God knows that Joe Public might be doing on their machines at home Hmm

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 17/12/2013 18:59

You have almost certainly found your own heartbeat. Trained midwives often won't try until past 16 weeks (exact protocol vary), you almost certainly would not manage. And the fact that you've found a heartbeat at an adult heartbeat pace strongly suggests it's yours.

Personally I would lock the monitor in a box for at least 10 weeks.

Bakingtins · 17/12/2013 19:00

You found yours, probably picking up blood flow through the placenta.

RosesOnTheWane · 17/12/2013 19:02

It will sound like galloping hooves.

my midwife listened to baby's heart beat today. im 16 weeks. to start with she picked mine up... then had a play around then found baby.

I wouldn't like to worry myself!

TobyLerone · 17/12/2013 22:58

Definitely yours, not the baby's.

This is why it's not recommended to use a home doppler before about 16/18 weeks.

Smithy007 · 18/12/2013 00:14

The baby's heartbeat should be roughly double yours. So if you find it, check your own pulse just to make sure it's not your own.

I found mine with this pregnancy at about 10-12 weeks. To be honest, I wouldn't do it again because a doppler can bring a whole world of worry if every attempt isn't a perfect experience!

Angelina77 · 18/12/2013 10:02

I would disagree that it's a bad idea to try it, I found my baby's heart beat at 9 weeks (although it took a lot of trying) and now I find it very reassuring to check it every so often (13 wks now). I have an Angel Sounds monitor with headphones.

It does sound like you've found your own, but keep trying it. I always find my baby about 3 inches below my belly button and a little to the right. I have to put a bit of spit on the contact pad (I know it's a bit gross but it does seem to help) and keep altering the angle of the pad slightly while pushing down until I find it.

Good luck :)

Thanks for replying everyone. Think your all right it must have been mine! I'm going to leave it a few weeks and try again. I found my DD's at about 14 weeks and loved listening to it from time to time!

Angelina Why are you spitting on it? You can't use the doppler on dry skin, but baby oil or bio oil work fine, no need to grog on yourself Grin

HotCrossPun · 18/12/2013 10:25

OP, For weeks I thought I had found the baby's heartbeat. It wasn't until my midwife listened to it for the first time (about 16 weeks) that I realised it had been the pulsating of the placenta I'd been hearing!

Be patient. Smile

Angelina77 · 18/12/2013 11:45

Haha, thanks for the tip hotcrosspun :) I only have to put a tiny bit on, it's free and it works so I'll stick with that.
