I've been having what I thought was strange discharge for a while now with no other symptoms so I called the doctors for an appointment. the doctor said it didn't sound urgent but I could go and see the nurse who would take a swab so they could see what it was.
I visited the nurse and she said it looked like thrush (I've not had it before) and to call back later for a prescription. When I called back she told me the doctor had said she wanted to wait for the results to see if I needed antibiotics.
Three days later I got a prescription for some antibiotics which I picked up from reception. When I visited the pharmacist I asked if it was definitely ok to take while pregnant and was told that I shouldn't take them.
I called the surgery yesterday and spoke to a GP who said I shouldn't have been prescribed them and have been given a canestan pessary instead.
I feel a bit annoyed that I had to check myself and that I was prescribed something I couldn't take. I don't want to make a big fuss but think the surgery should review their procedures. I'm not sure how bad it would have been for me to take the antibiotics though. Should I write a letter? Thanks.

I think I would.

Also weird because thrush is a fungus, so I don't know that it would respond to anti biotics. PEople tend to find thrush gets worse when they have been on a course of anti biotics.
You definitely need to get to the bottom of what the swab actually said, and therefore what kind of meds you should have!

I would want to know what was found on the swabs.

Sounds sloppy to me. I would complain.

Hope everything is sorted asap!

Thanks for the replies. Yes - I was a bit confused why I got antibiotics. I did ask the reciptionist and she said it said candida and bacterial vaginosis. I was starting to get itchy by the time I got the prescription last night and I had to dash to the surgery to pick up the prescription so I didn't have time to ask. It may be because on the day of the swab I got given a prescription for canestan cream so the doctor may have thought I hadn't responded to that.
Think I will follow it up - thanks for the advice.

The antibiotics will be for the BV so it's important you have them. I would see the GP again, to make sure you get the correct meds that are safe in pregnancy, and flag up what's happened.
