Just wondering if this has effected anyone's pregnancy? I was told it can effect carrying your baby to full term and just wondering if this has effected anyone's pregnancy and how? I'm relying on this forum heavily because all my doctor seems to ever say is she isn't sure :s I'm sure she would say the same if I asked her name lol can't remember the last time a doc actually helped me

Hi I had a loop biopsy last November. I'm exactly 40 weeks today, no sign of baby making an appearance. Perhaps my pelvic floor exercises were too effective!? So I'd say you can quite easily go full term!

tgamble13 · 15/12/2013 15:42

i had one nearly two years ago and am now 34+5 no problems as of yet - fingers crossed. i worried about this too but noone did at my booking in appt

Hey OP, I checked with a very good gynae dr friend and she said they only become concerned about pre-term labour if you've had a cone biopsy or multiple lletz or colposcopies.

She put my mind at ease a lot better than my midwife or GP.

I had lletz about 10 years ago, carried dd now 8 to 39 weeks and currently 36 weeks with dc 2 Grin
They can scan your cervix if you/ they are concerned. Thanks

I've had one and have an completely incompetent cervix because of it. My children were born at 32 and 27 weeks and I had a late loss at 17 weeks which was directly attributed to it.

The vast majority of pregnancies after cone biopsies or Lletz procedures run as normal but it can cause issues with premature deliveries or pprom.

Ask for cervical length scans and any feelins of cervical pain, pressure, any fluid loss whatsoever then get checked out.

:)

I became pregnant with ds after loop biopsy, I gave birth exactly at 40 weeks after being warned like yourself that I probably wouldn't carry to term.

The only thing I experienced differently was that I had a very quick labour - my cervix basically just gave way and when I explained to the midwife (afterwards!) that i had had the loop biopsy recently, she said that it was very common for that to either speed up labour, or that conversely they stalled half way through. So covering all eventualities there, but maybe worth thinking about!

I had a cone biopsy 8 years ago, 2 years later I became pregnant with DD1. I was scanned at 24 weeks to make sure my cervix wasn't funnelling, it was fine. When I went into labour I had lots of problems as I was contracting heavily and the midwife thought I was being a drama queen as I was only 3cms. It turned out I was failing to dilate due to the scar tissue on the cervix and the baby pushing down onto it caused her to go into distress and stop breathing. I had a (nasty) EMCS and she was ok after a spell in special care.

This was all directly attributed to my treatment.

When I had DD2 I was told I could only deliver by CS which I was more than happy with, I was scanned again at 24 weeks to check for funnelling, again it was fine but I was insistent I was checked as my mum lost 2 pregnancies due to cervical shortening after cone biopsy treatment.

Most people don't have any issues but you are right to be aware of them. Hope it all goes well for you.

I had a loop thingy 2 months before conceiving my DD. I carried to 41 wks. My midwife was completley unconcerned despite my worries. I am currently 38 wks with DC2 and no sign yet. Just to add that I did not have a quick labour with DD but seemed to dilate normally. I think the procedure is unlikely to cause problems unless you have it more than once.

MummyKanny · 15/12/2013 20:12

I had one and then got pregnant around 18 months later. DD was two days early. I did have an extra scan to check cervical length but all was fine. Good luck!

I'm not sure what a cone biopsy is? Is it a different wording for a loop or something different? I know if more abnormal cells were found they would have had to be laze red rather then a loop so us that a cone?

It's essentially the same thing, Letz is the modern way to do it and the tissue is taken away using laser and wire, the cone biopsy is taking away the tissue using a cone shaped instrument that removes the affected section.

elvisola · 16/12/2013 06:50

Oh and loop biposy is just another name for Letz treatment.

lanbro · 16/12/2013 06:56

I had a loop and dd1 came at 37wks in 6 hours, dd2 at 38 wks in 2 hours but having been assessed as low riskddon't know for sure if there's a link. Unfortunately I am having another loop tomorrow but definitely not planning any more dc!

There are so many women out there with a history of one LLETZ/loop biopsy that the obstetricians have become quite relaxed about not needing to see them routinely. If the woman has had more than one, a cone biopsy or a loss attributed to incompetent cervix, she will be seen before 10 weeks of pregnancy and has a cervical suture put in to hold the cervix, and/or cervical length scans to warn about premature delivery. Sadly, there are women out there who have only been able to get a proper diagnosis of incompetent cervix after several losses. I have had Lletz and refused a consultant appt in this pregnancy because I knew I wouldn't be high risk for prem delivery any other way, and because I wouldn't want a cervical suture even if it was offered because the risks are so minimal and my cervix is huge, so there would be no point of taking up a medical appointment for the sake of being there for two minutes. Obviously if I get any unusual pains or symptoms I will be getting it checked out immediately.

greentshirt · 16/12/2013 07:51

It's not just having more than one that puts you at risk of an incompetent cervix, it's how extensive it was. I've only had one lletz and it was a big one. I only found this out by checking myself with the hospital, my midwife was happy to fob me off. I had 2 cervical length scans and although I do have a short cervix it's just outside the range of concern. I understand that they obv can't scan everyone to check but remember they will wait until you have one or two late losses/premature births before they consider looking at it as routine. I personally wasn't prepared to take that chance.

A cone biopsy is different to a lletz, it's deeper and more invasive and takes more tissue than a standard lletz. I would absolutely be asking if I needed a cervical scan if I had had a cone biopsy.

Seff · 16/12/2013 08:46

I had a lletz 2.5 yrs ago and currently 27wks pregnant with baby #2.

I saw a consultant at 16 weeks and he said there is a small risk of prem labour but not enough to do anything about it. I was also told that they don't routinely check unless you've had more than one procedure.'

JasMumOfFour · 16/12/2013 09:37

I am also very worried about this, I had a loop last year... this is also my 5th baby and I am only 6 weeks. I am having a lot of stabbing pains down there and it's really frightening me.
