You probably need to use pessaries along with the cream. from chemist or gp.HTH

I know it sounds far fetched but this worked for me on the advise of my excellent midwives ...

Peel and prick a clove of garlic. Put two or three drops of tea tree on it and allow to soak in. Thread some cotton through the clove (for retrieval purposes) and put the clove in the vag overnight.

This cleared up my terrible thrush in a day. I had also tried creams etc to no avail.

Also, avoid yeasty food (bread, wine) and sugary food for the time being. Take acidophulus (pro biotics) to encourage the freindly bacteria which normally fight thrush. Wash your knickers well (put vinegar or tea tree into the wash ans wear cotton knickers. Eat live yogurt or apply it locally.

Good luck. Thrush is horrible in pregnancy. Especially in these temperatures. Try to keep it cool and dry whenever poss as thrush thrives in wet moist conditions.

'advice'.

I'm afraid I tried all of Spidermamas advice and while some of it helped a bit (especially the garlic) the only thing that cleared up my thrush for any length of time in pregnancy was the canesten pessaries. I asctually had to use one about every 6-8 weeks or so in my prgnancy when the symptoms go so bad the garlic no longer worked. I also get quite bad thrush sometimes before a period so for me it was probably hormone related. Try all the above methods first but you may need a pessary - I was told by GPs, midwives etc that the pessaries were fne to use. Check with your doctor first though as they all have that warning on the instructions. You can't take the tablets though I seem to remember.

Spidermama, is the garlic only for thrush, or is it like yogurt in that it will work for other vaginal conditions as well?

Also, do you reek horribly overnight and afterwards when using it?

spidermama · 19/07/2006 16:26

Hi PC. Garlic has anti fungal properties as does tea tree, which is also anti bacterial.

It does make your fanny smell a bit garlicy, but only for half a day or so and when you're swollen and itching with thrush in this heat I would imagine that's the least of your worries. Well, it was mine.

IME the garlic and tea tree work to 'put out the fire' but then you have to prevent it igniting again by adjusting your diet and taking pro biotics.

PrettyCandles · 19/07/2006 16:31

So it's more for thrush than for things like BV.

One to remember. Thanks.

I've had thrush every 6-8 weeks too throughout the pregnancy, and I'm 36 weeks. The only thing that worked - quickly - is the canestan pessary. Get your GP to prescribe this for you and it will be free. It's completely safe in pregnancy. But like others have said, the hot weather certainly doesn't help! GOod luck!

I had very regular bouts of thrush with ds2. GP prescribed me a job lot to get me through. Far better than paying £12 a piece from chemist. And you can't take the tablet. Also try and get teh internal cream, much less messy than the pessary IMO.

Developed infection on my due date which I was devastated about - last thing I needed when people were going to be poking about down there - luckily he was 2 days late and it had cleared a little by then
Tablets are a no go when pregnant but keep using the cream and add tea tree to your bath or onto a panty liner as well - stings but gives some relief + cool baths too

i'm 20wks pregnant & had a couple bouts of thrush before my midwife put me onto a wonderful acupuncturist who has gently & succesfully put my body back into balance. i was also advised to cut out sweets (including fruit + definitely no chocolate) and nuts (except almonds) which sugars and oils feed the imbalance. increase vegies + proteins, decrease dairy intake and take BIO-K (dairy-free) daily -which is a great source of acidophilus eq to 100xyogurts. wear cotton underwear or no underwear where possible, avoid soaps around genitals and wash with warm water or with diluted tea tree oil -all this advice worked for me
