Risk of pre-term labour at 34 weeks

So this is dc3. Two normal pregnancies and fast overdue deliveries before. Both had a gear up of Braxton hicks weeks before. Resulting in two healthy 8lb+ babies.

So I am 34 weeks tomorrow, and te past few weeks but more so the past week I have been having very intense (not painful) Braxton hicks. Regular intervals. So went to MAU last night, I was monitored and I am contracting regular but not labour pains yet. It's more of a matter of when and if pre-term labour will happen.

Did a wee sample - had +1 lucozite? So they want to try anti bios to see if it helps with Braxton's.

Baby is also head down but not engaged, slightly back to back but with all limbs poking out so that sets me off into BH's, walking, sitting, anything will set them off.

Dr then said that he wanted me to stay in, and have the Fetal fibronectin test to see my chances of giving birth early. This involves a speculum and Sean up the cervix. I declined as I just feel that poking around up here might actually put me in labour. I'm just all over the place really. All of my vital signs are perfect. BP, no pain when weeing, no vomiting, etc baby is very chilled too. It's just the why of the BH's and when it will go into established labour.

Please advised, anyone had this???

Iv never had it but wanted to bump so your post doesn't go unanswered,
My sil did give birth at 34 weeks and dn was absolutely fine she had to be I'm scbu for a bit but only due to her age/ size ( just over 4lb) she was breathing + eating fine but i don't know why or how her labour started that early though.

Thanks for the response.

Our baby was 4lb 4 at 31+5 weeks, so it should be a nice size for 34 weeks? I would just like to get to 37 weeks.

It's crazy as baby could just trick me all the way and still go overdue lol but it's just the worry of my precious speedy births and only being 34weeks

lucozite = leucocyte = white blood cells in urine...possibly an infection (no symptoms in your case) but maybe not, did they send your sample off?

I would accept the fibronectin, test not invasive, very gently performed and a negative is a very good sign that you won't labour soon, a positive test less definitive but a good indication for steroids.

Sounds like you didn't get much time to talk things through with the MWs/ doctors who saw you?

My 3rd baby was wanting out at 34 weeks. My waters trickled at 34. Got an infection and was induced at 35 weeks! I wasnt given steroids or anything!

She was only in icu for 5 days then home with me :)

My twins were born at 34 weeks and spent 2 weeks in special care. I had steroid injections before they were born and both could breath on their own.

Have the fibronectin test, it should be able to tell you how likely you are to go into labour in the next two weeks.

I was kind of all muddled in my head, it was 12:30am by the one the dr was telling me all this. I was shattered and on my own as dp was at home with our daughters.

I just feel very uneasy having something poked up there this early on... I mean I had sweeps when my girls were overdue and they triggered things slightly. So I just have it in my mind... As if I'll be tempting what fate already has in store?

I have until tomorrow to decide as the cut off is 34 weeks.

I have been given antibiotics which I started early hours this morning for the trace

So if I don't have the test, and baby comes before day.. 37wks what are the chances without having had the steroids? Will it be really poorly?

My dd was just on antibiotics for 5 days then cam home.

34 weeks is considered pretty good these days. Baby should breathe unaided but likely to need a hot cot til lo can regulate temp, and may take a little while to get the suckle reflex. Docs are pretty relaxed about anything over 32 weeks. I'd have been delighted if dd had stayed put for 7 more weeks to hit 34. I'd get the fib test because each shot of steroids matures babies lungs by a fortnight and 36 weeks is practically term. Good luck.

littleraysofsunshine · 14/12/2013 21:59

Could it put me in early labour though?

Could I not just have the shots as a precaution? I want everything to be left to nature really, feel like I'm tampering with it considering my other signs are good...(written below)

I had this at 33 weeks, fibronectin was negative Smile didn't put me in labour. Am now 36 weeks and still having strong and painful bhs regularly but no 'labour' so think it's just body preparing for the event...Had 2 episodes of threatened labour with dd now 8 yo but that was before fibronectin test existed so had the steroids at 28 and 32 weeks. She ended up coming at 39 exactly.

I know from the short cervix thread that a lot of women at risk of very pre-term labour have the foetal fibronectin test, so I'd be quite surprised if it increased the risk in itself...

littleraysofsunshine · 15/12/2013 14:52

I just feel very uneasy about it :s

I have my midwife app tomorrow so will talk more with her.. It was all a bit rushed the other night
