I'm currently 12 weeks pregnant so not sue a scan till next week.

With dd I put on around 3 stones and before I fell pregnant again I had around a stone extra to loose..so I'm overweight by around 1.5 stones.

Thing is I haven't put on any weight so far. I want to minimise my xs weight gain but want to do it healthily iykwim. Should I be concerned..???

I eat 3 meals a day and snacks are usually fruit. TBH I am not eating a huge amount as I have suffered with morning sickness. Not actually been sick BUT nothing seems appetising. Also the heat doesn't help...

Would you worry..? Should I speak to my mw..??

first trimester I think you're ok without weight gain, I had such severe morning sickness I actually lost a stone in the first trimester andnever gained until 20 weeks - had to say made up for it afterwards
And I was not overweight and it did not harm dd!

schneebly · 19/07/2006 10:23

It it completely normal not to gain any weight in 1st trimester and your MW will not be worried about it, you might gain less this time because you are already carrying a bit of extra weight. I was about 4-5 stones overweight before having my DS1 and actually lost about 3-4 pounds by the end of the pregnancy so after I had him I was over 2 stones lighter! I was eating well and he was 8lbs 1oz - strange!

Elibean · 19/07/2006 10:50

Its really normal - especially if you were a bit more than your usual weight to start with. With dd I was underweight to start with, and put on more than the average amount of weight during the first trimester - guess my body needed to. I was on steroids during the first trimester this time (second pg) and put on a stone - far too much; I've hardly put on any since and I'm now 20 weeks. Not the usual way around, but I believe our bodies can and do compensate beautifully if fed healthy food and left to their own devices! I think if you're eating healthy food (when you can face it) you are absolutely fine.

thanks everyone...one worry after another .

mine was like piffle, i lost weight in the 1st trimester...now im 26 weeks and alls great, so i wouldnt worry about it congrats with the pregnancy by the way x

Seona1973 · 19/07/2006 13:23

I am currently half a stone lighter than I was when I first got pregnant (now 28 weeks), but I did start of a bit heavier than I should have been in the first place!! I havent had morning sickness but have found my appetite to be a bit less and I cannot eat as much in one sitting as I would have done before either.

The general 'rule' is:

If you are overweight try to aim for 1 stone weight gain

If you are average weight aim for a 2 stone weight gain

If you are underweight aim for a 3 stone weight gain.

Here is a link to the Babycentre website which explains it a bit better than me:

Pregnancy Weight Gain

Like others here I also lost weight in the 1st trimester and was really worried. My GP said there was no reason to worry at all as the baby would just take everything it needed from me during this time anyway.
Its only now that I have started to put on a few pounds and I am 19wks so I really would not worry about it at all. She also said that I may also just put more on later in the pregnancy and that everything was fine right now.

hope this helps, but if you are worried in a couple of weeks why not see your gp or mw.

shhhh · 19/07/2006 14:41

Thanks. I am due for a scan on mon so will speak to my mw then. Thing is though, although I am not putting on weight my body shape is changing so much!! My usual clothes don't fit and I'm in maternity ones already..! I thought that as they didn't fit and I no longer seemed to have a waist that I would defo be about half a stone heavier.!! Hey ho..Bodies are amazing..!

I did not have bad sickness but actually lost weight in first 3 months. put it down to not drinking wine/beer and just tryoing to be healthy. Was not a problem

stingray · 19/07/2006 18:52

I am 19 weeks pregnant and have only put 3lbs on in the last two weeks.I am still wearing most of my normal clothes, although some are a little tight now round the waist. My midwife said you should not put too much weight on in the first 14 to 16 weeks anyway. My last three pregnancies were exactly the same and my babies were 9.9lbs 9.3lbs and 8.9lbs so everything was obviously fine.

pebbles34 · 05/08/2006 21:45

sounds a bit stupid but you all keep using the term dd dd1 dd2 what is this. i know its probably really obvious. thanks

Seona1973 · 06/08/2006 09:38

its darling/dear daughter and the number will relate to which child it is e.g. dd1 will be the first daughter, dd2 the second daughter, etc (ds is darling/dear son)

shhhh · 06/08/2006 14:42

at the top of this page you can also refer to the " acronym list" for a breakdown of abbreviations. HTH.

shhh i think a walk every day should keep the weigh gain controlled , do u have other children, its a bit more difficult if u have t o get some free time for a really good brisk walk.

avoid the obvious cakes and bars but u need 3 meals a day
i worked when pregnat with dd1 and god i ate big lunch and dinner and breakfast at 5am !! when i couldnt sleep.

shhhh · 06/08/2006 21:21

Thanks..! I do have a dd who is 15 months and is keeping me on my toes! I do try and get out for walks with her etc so aim to keep fit but with morning sickness it's not always possible.!!

Hopefully my eating habits will continue...

hi all
it is great to read your messages and the variety of experiences.
I am 17 weeks pregnant today and I have gained 6 kgs already. I started my pregnancy with anemia and gluten intolerance that was detected at week 7! I now avoid gluten and I think it is a factor to get me to gain weight.
Before i was pregnant I used to work out 4-5 times a week and I used to burn 700-800 cals in one session, I had to cut down dastrically in my first 12 weeks as I was worried about the early stage of pregnany. I am gradually getting myself back to more moderate exercise and keep and eye on heart rate, I managed to burn 600 cals last time!
I am extremely tired all the time and keep waking up in the night to go to the loo. My sugar levels are great ( I am also type 1 diabetic with a pump) so no worries about sugar getting me to go to the loo.
I am still wearing size 10 but maternity, I am rounded and feel that my body started to change from week 8! i was flat as a wall before!
Do i need to worry about my weight gain?

Nicki10 · 07/08/2006 07:48

Pituca it was great to read that, I am currently only 5 weeks pregnant and I was the same as you gym 5 times a week to burn roughly 800 cals per session. The doctor has been worried about the cramping pains I have been having and so has told me to stop the gym altogether until 13 weeks. Therefore I have already put on weight as I am hungry all the time and I cannot work out, I'm just hoping I might lose some in second trimester.

shhhh · 08/08/2006 10:27

Please note my concern was "lack of weight gain" . TBH I wouldn't watch you weight to much as you need to ensure all is well for your baby.

As I had put on weight easily with dd and atm with baby2 it seems slower and steadier thats why I was worried...that baby wasn't growing at baby should iykwim. But scan has shown all ok so far.

I really wouldn't worry if I was either of you 2 as obviously you have a healthy lifestyle before baby and no doubt will continue it after.

hi shhh
I am glad it is going well with your baby's weight. We are all so different in our pregnanies!
I have started to show very early even though my hips are wide enough I always thought! I was quite slim before pregnant and rounded up very quickly, I can't hide it now at week 17! (I don't want to hide it anyway!) but it is funny when I go jogging and my belly sticks out of my lycra top and i can still run more than the average person in the gym despite my diabetes, coeliac disease and anemia! i feel great then!
I know that I have ti watch my sugar levels and I always do anyway but I do worry in the back of my mind about my baby growing too fast due to my diabetes!I should just relax and wait and see as I am very healthy and my last glucose analysis proved the average of a non diabetic person.
Anyway, good luck with your pregnancy!

CurrantBun · 09/08/2006 12:57

I'm very tiny anyway - weighed just under 7 stone pre-pregnancy, and I'm a marathon runner so very lean and fit. I'm now 11 weeks (maybe slightly less - haven't had a dating scan yet) and I don't think I've put on any weight yet. It's hard to tell as I'm going by the fit of my clothes - we don't own any scales so probably won't weigh myself until we go to the in-laws at the end of August.

I'm really not worrying about it. The baby will take what it needs and now I'm over the worst of the morning sickness and able to eat fruit and vegetables again, I'm just trying to eat healthily, not get too hungry and carry on exercising (I'm still running 5 times a week, but shorter distances and a lower intensity than before).

I will be horrified if I gain the 'recommended' 3 stone! Although according to BMI calculators I'm 'underweight', these don't take account of your frame size and build. Although I'm tiny, I don't look skinny and my GP told me that there was no need to gain any more than 10-12kg during pregnancy. He said there's too much emphasis in the UK on encouraging women to gain weight, when in fact it's not needed.
