Ive just received a letter telling me I am expected to take the test on the 19th at 8.30am. I just cannot make this appointment or any Christmas. The midwives were most displeased, but have rescheduled for the 2nd January when I will be about 30 weeks.
Will something awful happen if I delay?
Are there any symptoms I should be looking for? I actually feel better than I have in years, and in terms of sugar intake I can manage to eat it now, where I really couldn't manage much before PG.
I know for a fact that DD is ok, she is being CLOSELY monitored.
Should I be worried?

Have you been having growth scans?

Im no expert but I think having gestational diabetes means your body doesnt create enough insulin- it doesnt deal with the carbs/sugars and glucose you eat and it will cross the placenta and baby can be affected.

Im sure someone else can explain it better. It can happen to anyone skinny or big

Hope u can get it rearranged asap

If you have gd your body won't be using the sugars you eat properly and these will be passed through the placenta to your baby, if it does happen gd can cause premature labour, problems during labour, the baby being big, you to carry too much waters, issues with the placenta and shoulder distocia(however you spell it), along with a lot of other issues, these can try to be avoided if you manage your blood sugars, I found out at 28 weeks and I had no idea I was going to have it, I felt fine, I had a growth scan which showed my babys stomach is alot bigger than the rest of him which means the sugar had been going to him already at 28 weeks.

I'm not saying anything would happen if you delay but it is something you should do early as possible, chances are your fine, but if not it gives you the opportunity to sort things out, also if you have gd the hospital will not want you to go over your due date most hospitals say 38 weeks as it increases the chances of still birth so you might not have as long left of your pregnancy as you think,

I knew nothing about gd when I was diagnosed there is alot to it and alot you learn but it's hard to take it on within the short time you get from 28 weeks to giving birth, I'm 36 weeks and still struggling.
Personally I think it will be better for you to find out as early as possible. Good luck. Fingers crossed you won't have it. Smile

I wish that was my hospital terilou. My consultants are pretty sure I had undiagnosed gd with my last baby, I am being tested just after Xmas with this one. They have however told me that even if I do have gd they will not section me till my 39th week!

hubbahubster · 13/12/2013 20:49

Your normal appointments would have picked up any sugar in your wee. If your baby is already being closely monitored then any unusual growth would be detected. I wouldn't stress.

I had borderline GD last pregnancy despite not having sugar in my wee, but DS was 6lb13 although growth scans had him at 8lb at 38 weeks... So basically even if a growth spurt is picked up, it may still not be accurate!

I was recently diagnosed with gestational diabetes, and truthfully I wish I'd never consented to the GTT.

I'm being micro-managed to the Nth degree and it's driving me crazy. They want me to do home finger-pricks four times a day and report my findings. I'm on the worst, strictest diet (even fruit is a sin!) at the worst time of year, and all because they are worried about macrosomia (big baby) which leads to an increased risk of C-section, which I'm already having anyway!

Yes, there are other potential risks, most of which can be managed by harvesting your colostrum from 36 weeks and having it to hand to supplement early feeding.

The attitude of my healthcare professionals really been the last straw for me, they talk as if they don't need my consent for any medical decisions or treatment for me or the baby, when they very much do. It's sucking all enjoyment out of this pregnancy for me, and frankly is causing an amount of stress which is disproportionate to the benefits I am getting.

Sometimes I just want to do a runner and have my baby in a different area where they will leave me alone for a bit!

Hubba iv never had sugar in my wee and my gd isn't borderline so I don't think that is a symptom of gd that you can go off alone though I know it is a symptom. I do agree with growth scans though, they can be very inaccurate. I'll be interested to see how accurate mine are iv got my last scan next Wednesday, then another week and a bit till c section,
cathpip that's interesting, my hospital say 38 weeks is what they prefer and mostly do, but they don't like women with gd to go past due date at all, it's the same at all the hospitals round here but I know other hospitals in other areas do have different criteria around gd.

Well DD is being growth scanned monthly and is coming up just below or on the 50th centile. Its also suggested that she may well be born at around 37 weeks any way. There's no way I can make the 28 week app next thursday, so I'm booked in on the 4th Jan.

terilou I know lack of sugar in the wee isn't an absolute indication of being GD-free - as I said, I didn't have any but was diagnosed with GD, albeit v borderline. I meant it's one red flag that would have been picked up by now. More important is the fact that the OP's LO is already being growth monitored and is measuring fine, although I don't set a lot of store by those after my experience!

I had a section too - good luck with yours! It was because of low placenta, not the GD, but it was brought forward a week because of DS's apparent massive size. Ha!

hubbahubster · 14/12/2013 10:54

Quannoi I feel your pain... It was the same for me first time around and I'm now getting stress from midwives with this pregnancy because I'm refusing the GTT they want me to take every 4 weeks! DM me if you want to let off steam ;)
