Is it ok to take Dioralyte in pregnancy

I've woken up this morning with horrendous v&d. Not sure if its a bug or morning sickness returning (i'm 33 weeks).

Does anyone know if dioralyte is ok to take? I'm assuming it is but some reassurance would be great. Not that i can keep anything down yet (trying sips of warm water) but as soon as i can i need to get some energy back into my body so i can look after my toddler (a friend is going to take him out for a few hours for me).

I've got no particular authority on this, but I can't see why not, it's just essential salts and sugars isn't it?

NHS direct (or whatever they are now) told me to drink it a few weeks ago when I had D&V, I was second trimester.

If you're still worried, there is a recipe here to make your own -

  • basically salt, sugar and water. Apparently the salt gets absorbed quickly and pulls the water in, then the sugar helps push all the water in. I may have remembered it wrong though.

It should be fine.

If everything's still coming straight back up, try resting your stomach for an hour or so, then start having 5 mls (1tsp) Dioralyte every 5 mins initially, then if that stays down slowly increase the frequency and amount. Little and often tends to stay down better than a lot all at once.

If you find it really hard to get it down because of the taste, at this stage you could instead try 1:5 diluted clear apple juice:water, adding a few nibbles of crackers/rice cakes as soon as you feel up to it. But if you start to actually get dehydrated you'll want the proper Dioralyte or equivalent.

Not a health professional, just repeating advice given to us when DS was ill - seemed to work on him!

Thanks everyone, i'm still not great but found a bottle of flat lemonade in the fridge which i'm managing in small sips. I have spoken to labour ward too as i've been having some major regular cramps which seem to have died down now thankfully. They have said dioralyte is fine to take once i feel able to.

I was prescribed dioralyte in the summer as had hyperemesis and dehydration. The thing that put me off taking it more was that it contains a lot of aspartame and I was avoiding chemical sweeteners in 1st trimester. Dioralyte also contains potassium which is important to keep in balance when dehydrated as deficit from d&v causes painful muscle cramps.

I also found that flat full sugar lemonade helped. If you skip the dioralyte make sure you can squeeze in some salty potassium rich foods. For me that meant little sips of V8 juice, the odd bit of banana and ready salted crisps.

Hope you are feeling better soon
