Pretty sure my fundal height hasn't grown - call the midwife?

At my 24 week appointment, my fundal height was described as 'a bit lower than I would have liked'. When I looked later it was actually a bit below the 10th centile. I've got three fibroids so I have a scan booked in at 27+4; I'm assuming that this, combined with the fact that I was only just below 10th, and that it's my second pregnancy, led them not to send for a growth scan. Fair dos really.

Trouble is, I feel pretty small (I was huge through my first pregnancy) and so last night (26 weeks) I asked my husband to help measure my fundal height and if I've done it right, it hasn't grown one bit. She's still kicking like a good 'un though.

Do I: a) wait until the scan at 27+4 or b) call the midwife tomorrow morning?

I didn't haven't fundal height measured at my 24 week midwife appointment - is it routine that we are supposed to?

I think the fact she is still kicking is a very positive sign - when is your scan booked for?

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 10/12/2013 22:42

I've had my fundal height measured once in 27 weeks. I'm sure I read somewhere that it really isn't an accurate measure of anything in particular.

SinkyMalinks · 10/12/2013 22:55

I'm unconvinced by the utility of fundal heights. I'm constantly 3-5 weeks big but 20 scan was totally fine (was measured, god knows why, at 16 week as well). I wouldn't read too much into it, but I gather you wouldn't be scanned on the basis of one measurement. If you constantly measure off range, then I think you might be offered a scan.

I hoping to get a scan soon, if only to stop having to go to te midwives weekly to get a room number generated measured.

To get an accurate measurement it should always be the same person measuring you - even 2 MWs could get different measurements.

Any concerns are always best to get checked out by a professional though,

Fundal height is extremely inaccurate. I've consistently measured around 5 weeks behind, had a growth scan etc and all appears well. Have also had a difference of 4cms between different midwife measurements on the same day! if you're worried it's always worth getting checked though Smile

The fundal height isn't really an accurate predictor of what is going on. I measured behind with my first child, and out he popped bang on 40 weeks, weighing in at just over 7 1/2lbs no complications at all.

What everyone else said.

Fundal height isn't accurate and frankly I'm surprised they still measure it at all. It's so archaic and odd.

But it will be particularly inaccurate if someone untrained does it, and I'm not sure your mw will book you a growth scan based on what your partner says.

Thanks everyone - with my first pregnancy I don't actually remember being measured... but I was very, very big (much bigger than I am this time), yet DS was only 5 lb 15 at 38+5. He had a few problems at first so I really do want a bigger baby this time. I had polyhydramnios with him though (picture the 12 gorges damn in China collapsing - this was my waters breaking - one mattress and carpet entirely ruined). My scan is actually only a week and a bit away and I do feel quite a bit bigger today.

Thanks again.
