Anyone have SPD with first but not with second?

I've just found out this morning I'm 4w pregnant with my second (I'm 41 and we only did it once last month, I should rent out my DH). I had terrible, awful, immobilising SPD from 18 weeks in my first pregnancy. I'm wondering therefore if it's a foregone conclusion that I'll get it again this time around.

Did anyone have SPD with their first but not with their second?

From everything I have read I think its inevitable you will get it in each pregnancy earlier and earlier each time.

First pregnancy I got it v badly from 22 weeks.

Currently 20 weeks and have been having twinges from 7 weeks but just doing all the keeping knee stuff together and exercises from last time and i can seem to calm it down. Fingers crossed i can keep it at bay. I also hit a physio referral at 12 weeks so now I can to for help when needed.

I think it can vary. I had it badly from 8 weeks on my first pregnancy, and was bracing myself for the same again this time around, but didn't start getting minor twinges until 16 weeks and then it became more severe at 26 weeks and started affecting what I was able to do.

It has been really tough, and probably worse in these later stages than last time (I'm now 35 weeks), mainly because I have a toddler so fewer opportunities to rest, but I did have it easier at the start and have been able to remain active for longer than I initially feared.

I was a lot more cautious at the beginning after my previous experience, no high impact exercise, being careful not to over stretch and to lift things correctly. I also got in touch with the physio early on, I got crutches before I really needed them and use them whenever I am with dh on weekends when he could chase toddler/push buggy etc, which I think helped take the strain off my joints and prevented me overdoing it without realising. I don't know if these things made any difference, but it has helped psychologically to feel like I can manage it.

I had it very badly with my second (although not my first) and not at all with my third, so it's obviously not inevitable in every case. I did a lot of yoga in the 3rd pregnancy so I don't know if that helped or if it was just lucky.

It was earlier with DC2. With DC3 it wasn't as bad, but I was seeing an osteopath which may have helped plus I'd recently run a marathon so I was in good shape. It did kick in earlier than with DC1 though - I remember not being able to walk far at around 20 weeks with DC3 versus a little bit later with DC1.

This time round it kicked in a bit later. Part of me wonders if it's because I took up skiing between DC3 and DC4 and I found it really strengthened my quads and probably my core.. I think I bought myself a few extra weeks there! But at 25 weeks I am hobbling around with a crutch and considering borrowing a Shopmobility wheelchair this weekend to do Christmas shopping, so yeah. Here we are again. As always.

Bloody hate it but above all I hate most medical professionals attitude to it - "Put up with it, it's only temporary and it's part of pregnancy". A broken leg gets far more sympathy and surely the same applies - it's only temporary!

Below are the times when it really properly kicked in - as in it doesn't just hurt (I can deal with that, that starts from BFP), but it's actually stopping me from moving very fast etc and I become dependent on mobility aids and so on.

DC1 - 24ish weeks I think
DC2 - 20 weeks
DC3 - 20 weeks
DC4 - 24 weeks

Ok so I had it mildly with dc1 absolutely nothing with dc2 horrendous just awful with dc3 couldnt roll, couldn't walk up stairs put socks on and ended up with crutches! Then dc4+5 twins I had it but nit as bad as dc 3

I had it moderately badly with DS and then nothing with DD. Plus pregnancy and birth much better second time round too.

I had it with my second but not my first or third... Was really bad with dd1 as well, had crutches and a brace thingy around my hips.

Does it seem to make any difference how close together the pgs are? I didn't have it at all with dd1 but fell pg with Dd2 on her 1st bday and had terrible SPD from around 30 weeks. This time it is 8 yrs since last pg and just wondering if that wills make a difference?

I had it with DD from week 20 and suffered quite badly. I have had twinges this time round but nowhere near like I had last time and this baby is suspected to be much larger so i expected to get it worse due to the extra weight i am carrying. I'm now 39 weeks and although it is painful to turn over in bed, I am fine during the day and can walk and move around normally.

I had it with DC2 from about 10 weeks but not all with DC1 or DC3.
So I don't think it's inevitable every pregnancy.

I had it mildly for laat trimester with dc1, really badly with dc2 from about 20 weeks and really mildly again with dc3. The gap 1-2 is 18 months, 2-3 is 3 years and I think the fact I didn't have to push a pushchair or carry a baby made a big difference.

Thanks for starting this thread - I am also interested to know! I had it bad enough in my first pregnancy that I couldn't walk at all at one point and was on crutches for a month - luckily I got physio pretty quickly which worked to a degree. I am now 7.5 weeks pregnant with my second and worried about what's in store for this time. I have a little hope now I have seen that some people have it in some pregnancies but not in others.

I had it with dc1, came on suddenly around 35 weeks (( prob simmered earlier but I ignored, oops and had a very physical job) ended up on crutches for a week or so which seemed to rest pelvis a lot and it went away but with dc2 I didn't get at all, I was more careful at work (much reduced hours) and moved carefully eg knees together in and out car /bed etc, avoided pushing trolleys, so mayb that pre empted a problem, now on dc3 and been a bit twingey but have rested inbetween the more hectic days and it hasn't amounted to much, I guess listen to body helps, hope you ok tho op I do know it really hurts/pinches when it gets bad, I was in tears half way up my stairs and rang the physio there and then to bring apt forward!

First pregnancy it arrived around 24 weeks and I ended up on crutches. Second pregnancy I had some mild twinges around 18 weeks then nothing. (The pregnancy gods were fair and gave me gestational diabetes that time round!)

Like you I was terrified of getting it again, particularly with a toddler to look after. My PGP hadn't completely gone away and I'd been diagnosed with an arthritic hip, so I thought I was doomed. The things that may have helped:

  1. An injection of local anaesthetic into my hip, which is probably not relevant to you, but might be to others.
  1. I got a referral to my local NHS women's Physio team at my booking in appointment and saw them for the first time at about 14 weeks. If your trust doesn't have one, ask around to see whether neighbouring ones do. They are experts in diagnosing and treating PGP.
  1. I did exercises from the physios from the start, and when I got twinges, they put me in tubigrip from breast to hip - not very sexy! But very supportive and less faffy than a support belt.
  1. I had sports massages every fortnight to stop any build up of tension.
  1. I saw an expert osteopath between pregnancies who gave me advice on my posture. He is in Tunbridge Wells if that's at all reachable for you. Worth a journey.

I have suffered with SPD in my 3rd & 6 th pregnancy. Strangely 3rd pregnancy was awful from 22 weeks & I wasn't at all big. Spent months in physio up until baby was 4 months old.

No physio this time. Im 33 weeks & the consultant as well as the midwife have messed up my referral! I won't be seen now...
