12 week scan?

MontyP · 09/12/2013 19:06

I've got my 12 week scan on Wednesday (Nuchal and dating). When do they give you the results of the Nuchal - is it there and then? And what actually happens please. Feeling very much a newbie.

Mine was done in combination with a blood test then I received the results a few days later.

KippyVonKipperson · 09/12/2013 19:10

It depends on your hospital & the type of tests they offer, if its just the measurement from the scan then they could tell you on the day (it was on the print out of the notes I got given on the day) but often they test your blood too for a combined result, which takes a couple of weeks to come back via the post usually.

Congratulations by the way, hope everything goes well at the scan Thanks

Hi Monty, I had the same a few months ago. Sonographer had a good look at baby, took length/width measurements etc and then asked if we'd opted for the nuchal.
Said yes and she zoomed in on baby's head and measured the fluid at the back of the neck in mm. After the scan I had a blood test. About 1 week later i got a letter from the hospital saying 1 in 100000 chance. In our trust the midwife will contact within a week if high risk.
Am glad opted for the combined test as based on age and risk factors alone my stats were 1 in 465. Puts my mind at rest no end.
Enjoy your scan x

The results will be put in your notes, but in my trust they don't talk to you about it until you get the results of a blood test as well (its a combined test).

So when I got home from the scan I googled what the Nuchal score meant, but it was another few days before I had a letter which said there was a 1:8500 chance of the baby having Downs, and that was based on the bloods and the scan.

They said if the results showed a high probability, I would be informed faster than this.

My midwife also talked to me about it at my next routine appt, but that was 16 weeks I think, so would be a long wait!

MontyP · 09/12/2013 19:11

Thanks. As I am 40, I am rather worried about the Nuchal test thing. Do I hold off telling people until after I get the test results?. Only 4 people know so far (including me!), and DH would love to tell his family.

I held off until the 20 week scan! But I am totally paranoid, and told DH that it was only a few extra weeks...I think do whatever you are most comfortable with between the 2 of you. Loads and loads of people I know have told people before the 12 week scan (and most of those are friends of around your age) so I suppose it depends on your point of view.

Best of luck, and I hope all goes well and you can enjoy the scan!

KippyVonKipperson · 09/12/2013 19:18

You could wait until you've had the scan and find out the measurement? If the measurement alone is normal you could tell people but if its on the high side then hold off until the blood results. I suppose it's up to you both to decide when to tell people. I think next time I will hold off until I have the blood results too, and with your age as well there is more of a reason to. Why don't you ask them how long it'll take or if you can phone them in a couple of days to ask? If you only have to wait a few days it won't be so bad to wait, although I'm sure you can't wait!

MontyP · 09/12/2013 19:22

Thanks everyone. It's so great to know I can just come on here and rant/wail without feeling silly. xx

Do you know if you get bloods as well or just NT measurement?

In my area, it took over 2 weeks for them to get back to me and tell me I was high risk (though everything is thankfully fine), so I would check timescales.

MontyP · 09/12/2013 20:00

I have to get bloods done as well, as I am out of area and midwife couldn't - but I don't know if this is bloods for nuchal or just general bloods. I suppose I could read the leaflet :) But my eyes go all woozy at the possibilities. I will write a list to ask at the scan.

It depends on a hospital. I'm with UCL Hospital and had a combined test (scan and bloods) last week. I got all results, including blood, on the same day, within 40 minutes and the sonographer/doctor discussed it all with me there and then.
My risk went down from 1/290 to 1/5777 :-)
Good luck!

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 09/12/2013 21:47

If the sonographer sees anything anomalous, they HAVE to tell you. Even if you have opted out of the nuchal and bloods.

KippyVonKipperson · 11/12/2013 08:49

Hope it all goes well today OP

elishalesley · 11/12/2013 08:56

I was told I would receive the results through the post within 3 working days, if the results were bad I should expect a phone call! I didn't receive a phone call and I only got my results through the post around 2 weeks later...

MontyP · 12/12/2013 10:04

Thanks all. I was worrying about the wrong thing. MMC. Get flushed tomorrow. :(

I am so sorry MontyP.

I had one of those in November last year, but I am now pregnant again (and got through the 12 week scan) so there is always hope. Sending you best wishes and a speedy recovery.

Heartfelt condolences.

Tomkat79 · 12/12/2013 22:05

Oh Monty I'm so so sorry. MC is the just the worst. Hope you have lots of RL support. Plenty of advice and hand holding on here, under body and soul. I spoke to some amazing people who helped get me through.

Be really kind to yourself and take all the time off you need. Are you having an ERPC tomorrow? If so try not to worry, it's over very quickly and no pain etc.

Much love xxx

PenguinsDontEatStollen · 12/12/2013 22:06

Oh I am so sorry. Look after yourself. xx

Barbsta · 12/12/2013 23:24

I have my 12 week on weds too :) I am clueless about everything tbh because I'm yet to tell people so can't really ask for advice. Can't wait to get to 12 week then I can finally tell people! What is a nuchal??

Barbsta · 12/12/2013 23:28

I'm so sorry I wish I read the whole thing first. Can't even begin to imagine how you are feeling :(

theborrower · 13/12/2013 08:50

Montyp - so sorry for your loss. Take care of yourself x

MontyP · 15/12/2013 19:39

Thanks all, and no worries Barbsta. Everything went fine, although I feel like I ran a marathon yesterday - and that I did 100 sit-ups!
