Tips to get the baby moving before the 20-week scan?

I have my anomaly scan this week, does anyone have any handy tips to make sure the baby is awake when I get to the hospital? I'll be devastated if they can't do the scan because the bean won't wake up. The scan has been booked first thing in the morning which is when I feel the least movement from the sprog!

Coffee, lucozade, cold cold water, lots of sugar! Basically everything they advise you not to eat much of when pregnant!

I had a small chocolate bar before my 20 week scan and was devastated when they couldn't see what gender the baby was, so the week after we paid for a private scan and I had all of the above in large quantities and as soon as they got the baby up on the screen they could tell straight away we were having a girl Smile I know all the sugar is awful but just for that scan I wasn't risking having a stubborn sleepy baby!

My baby was fast asleep with her head tucked into my pelvis for my scan. They told me to go to the loo, drink a caffeine drink with sugar and do star jumps. It sort of worked, she moved a bit for the photos and measurements.
Eighteen months on she us the wriggliest child ever and not overly keen on sleep!
Good luck

I was told to have lots of sugar!!!!!

I drank lots of fizzy pop, had 3 sugars in my tea, sugar on my cereal and then had a chocolate bar Smile

Baby was awake for the majority of the scan but when they needed him to move she just wobbled my bump around, made me get up and jump up and down on the spot and also asked me to thrust my pelvis up and down whilst lying on the bed. It was like going for a work out Grin

I sucked on a gaviscon, never fails to get baby moving and solves the heartburn issue!

MiracleOntheM4 · 09/12/2013 18:29

My first daughter was in a position that meant the
sonographer couldn't complete the anomaly testing so I got sent to eat a bar of chocolate and instructed to return 30 mins later. Bingo!

When I went for my 20 week scan, baby was transverse and facing into my back with its legs crossed Hmm soon started moving about when they applied pressure (I had a full bladder too! Not sure if that helps, does your appt letter state whether to go with a full bladder?)

Something cold like eating an ice lolly

kjh5 · 09/12/2013 22:16

Haha! Thanks for all the advice! I'll definitely sugar up. Poor DH will just have to deal with me bouncing off the walls for the rest of the day! Grin They said not to have a full bladder thank goodness! But I expect I'll prob need the loo anyway - I seem to have to go every 20min at the moment. Really hoping they get a good view and we can find out the sex.

Had mine on Friday and the thing was most uncooperative! Was told to go for a walk and have some caffeine and some sugar (flat white and cake? If you insist...Smile) and it made no difference. Told to go and sit in the waiting room, to see if it would kick in. There was no one else there, so I did a bit of downward dogging (!) and some jumping around...and nope. She got some measurements, but couldn't see enough to complete it, so I have to go back for another one. But all she did see was absolutely fine - and we get another scan where we won't be quite to nervous beforehand.

Please do have a full bladder.. At leads you have option of going to empty some out to get it to move instead of having to sit and fill bladder up. Plus the bladder being full pushes the bowels out of the way which blocks views..
Ribena, orange juice and chocolate. Sausage rolls seem to do the trick. Please avoid fizzy drinks as they aren't as helpful as still drinks.

I've had men

Lol...: I posted too soon!!

I meant to say I've had men playing their iPhone music to the bump to get baby to move... Queen is a favourite!!

worley how long before the scan should one start necking said substances? Half an hour or so?

I have mine on Thursday. In my last pg I was sent out to walk up and down the stairs halfway through the scan!

kjh5 · 10/12/2013 11:10

Postman think they say 30min beforehand. I've noticed about 15min after I've eaten something the bubba tends to wake up. I just slugged a cup of coffee and about 15min later we had a bit of a kickathon going on here. I'm wondering if it is responding to something warm in my stomach? I'm going to load up on sugar before I go and maybe drink a coffee while we are waiting to go in for the scan... it's on Friday so fx that works. I might do a trial run tomorrow ;)

Thanks kjh. Will aim to be having tea and cake right before leaving the house then.

EeyoreIsh · 10/12/2013 12:40

I had an orange juice whilst waiting and baby was wriggling so much that they really struggled to get the measurements! So I'd recommend not overdoing the sugar!
