Swelling in one foot and leg.

I'm about 29 weeks and, as the title suggests, have some swelling in my right foot, ankle and calf. I also have a pain down the front of my right shin, I haven't sprained it or done anything out of the ordinary. Is this just normal pregnancy oedema or should I be concerned? Anyone had this before?

ring ooh gp or go to a and e.
needs checking to rule out a dvt

Call your maternity ward/midwife/111. Midwives are very hot on asking about swelling of the legs so better safe than sorry.

FredFlintstonesSister · 06/12/2013 22:25

Would I have any other symptoms? Saw midwife a few days ago and apart from anaemia she said all was fine.

You need to go and get this looked at ASAP. Ring your labour ward or maternity assessment ward tonight (some of them see you there and some send you to A&e first). Your blood clots more easily in pregnancy so DVTs are much more common and need ruling out even though its more likely to just be fluid.

BettyOff · 06/12/2013 22:27

No you wouldn't have other symptoms, most people would feel fine otherwise but as others have said DVT needs ruling out and if it is just swelling then they'll want to check your BP and a urine sample.

Please call your local maternity unit.

FredFlintstonesSister · 06/12/2013 22:29

Thanks. Midwife did blood pressure and urine check on Wednesday and no real issue. Will probably give them a call in the morning if its not better.

It's not massively swollen, just a bit. Just thought it was strange it was only on one side.

Tonight not the morning. How much bigger

BiscuitMillionaire · 06/12/2013 22:34

DVT is potentially very dangerous. Please don't wait till tomorrow.

FredFlintstonesSister · 06/12/2013 22:37

I have really skinny ankles usually, bugsylugs, but the bone on the right hand side of my ankle has kind of disappeared! The rest of my foot and leg is only slightly more swollen than usual.

A DVT can develop very quickly particularly in pregnancy .

I am a midwife and would be very concerned if I took your call this evening, I'd be wanting to see you.

Please give them a call. It is probably normal pregnancy oedema however should not be ignored.

FredFlintstonesSister · 06/12/2013 22:40

Ok. I'll keep it elevated for 30mins and if no change I'll call in. Thanks.

I had a suspected DVT earlier in my pregnancy (just turns out to be caused from standing up all day at work) but they told me to go in straight away.
The midwife told me if it's a blood clot, then there is a chance of it breaking away and making its way to your heart/lungs, where you will be dead in a matter of hours.
Please just give them a call!

How're things going OP, did you call?
