Hi just wondering if anyone is in the same situation as me. Im around 7 weeks pregnant and have been suffering really badly with morning, afternoon and all day sickness lol. It got to the point I couldn't keep anything down and was constantly sick and feeling sick and I have dd who is 4 and disabled to look after and my hubby works long hours. Anyway, I rung the dr in desperation yesterday and he prescribed me a medicine called Avomine. And iv taken 3 so far and feeling a lot lot better. Not 100% but can eat and haven't felt sick. After reading the label it says not to take when pregnant but obviously the dr knew I was pregnant as he prescribed it for morning sickness. I now feel v.worried and don't know whether to stop taking them. Iv tried everything else and this seems to be the only thing helping. Please help.

Hi pinkbunny. There are lots of tablets prescribed for morning sickness and every single one of them says not to take during pregnancy. This is because there have never been clinical trials on pregnant women- it wouldn't be ethical. But the ones routinely prescribed have been used for decades in some cases, with no ill effect on either mum or unborn baby. Your doctor will have prescribed one that is in that category. From what I've heard from other hyperemesis sufferers avomine is pretty routinely prescribed. Glad your dr is taking you seriously and that he/she has given you something that helps - morning (ha!) sickness is dreadful, have some Thanks. Congratulations by the way :)

I've been prescribed Avomine in this pregnancy and my last one (12 years ago!)

It works, but it knocks you out completely. It's best to take it at night.

Thanks so much for getting back to me, I just panicked when I saw that it said not to be taken in pregnancy in the leaflet, all iv done is pretty much sleep when my dd is at nursery and going to bed the same time as her but its worth it just to stop most of the sickness. Just hoping it goes soon so I can stop taking it. im taking dd to Disneyland for xmas in a couple of weeks and want to be feeling a bit better by then! fingers crossed xxx

I was rx avomine with ds2.
No issues at all.
Took it at night for about 3 months iirc.

I took avomine when I was pregnant with dd. It allowed me to start keeping water down but I had to sleep for a few days while I recovered from the sickness, mum had to look after then 1yo DS.

After a few days I had a good routine of taking it at tea-time, by the time it had got in my system I was able to eat my evening meal then I'd be out for the count all night. There was enough avomine in my system at breakfast time that I could keep some toast down. I just had to eat very little in the day time for a couple of weeks.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. Just am so worried of taking any mediciation in pregnancy, esp with all the health scares with anti sickness medicine years ago. I take one when I get up and one about 4ish in the evening, and have to admit am feeling pretty much drained all the time, but its preferable to the sickness lol, im actually starting to feel a little bit like I used to, just hope I don't need to take them for to long :)xxxx

Just wondered should it stop me being sick entirely? Gone from 4/5 times a day to 2/3 times so better but didn't know if thats as good as it gets or if it should stop it entirely?

SicknSpan · 09/12/2013 17:24

It might not stop it entirely, no. If it's still difficult to manage go back to your Dr and see if they can change it to something else - there are a number of different drugs to try. Hope you feel better soon icklekid.

I'm currently 23 weeks and took avomine for a few weeks early on and have had no issues due to them (I did need to take 3 of them a day aswell which I was reluctant to do)

After that I switched to cyclizine. They do a similar job but don't knock you out as much.
