I have a bad bout of thrush - the first this pregnancy - although I am no stranger to it generally and throughout my last pregnancy. Can someone please give me a definitive answer on the treatment of this - is it safe to use the internal cream with applicator? In my previous preg I used it and only inserted 3/4 of the way and was wary about not going to high with applicator. However I have just picked up a prescription from doctor and been told they are not happy to recommend the applicator or internal treatment and that I have just to 'work some of the external cream up with my finger...' which doesn't sound like it will get to the problem area.

Can anyone shed any light as it is a bit worrying when the GP won't even ok the internal treatments. And as an aside I am fully aware that oral tablets are contraindicated during pregnancy so no issues there.
Thank you so much, really need to be put out of my misery asap, so I appreciate the input.

Can you try natural remedies instead? A tampon dipped in natural yoghurt? Or I suppose you could dip the tampon in the cream as well?

Horrible isn't. I've been plagued with it since getting a BFP! My GP prescribed cream and lower dose pessaries. One a night for 5 nights and cream. I would be wary of using the applicator, I just pushed pessary up as high as I could.

Hope you get some relief soon x

I did wonder about the tampon with the canesten cream on it, but then wondered if it is definitely safe to be using in internally at all...feel like I am doubting myself as although I used it during last prey that was a while ago and maybe it is not advised now?

I wonder how effective the cream is as only really suitable for the external itch and not sure if would actually 'treat' the thrush inside?

hi cesca, sorry you're suffering. i've had it twice this pregnancy and the pharmacist wouldn't sell me it over the counter due to being pg. i got a prescription from the gp for the canestan pessary and cream - the cream for external use only.
hope it clears up soon as it's bloody miserable x

Pessary or internal cream is the standard treatment for thrush in pregnancy - cks.nice.org.uk/candida-female-genital#!scenariorecommendation:14 - your GP is crazy! Print that off and go back.... Or just get someone else to buy the pessary or pick it up off a supermarket shelf.

After having chronic thrush all the way through the 3rd trimester I took flucanozole in the end. I'm a research geek and the evidence of danger is first trimester, high dose constant use. There have been good observational studies of use (the only kind really available in pregnancy, I.e. Comparing women who took the drug with those who didn't in the general population) of the one off dose in pregnancy showing no increased risk of miscarriage, malformation etc.
