I hope everyone suffering from the Horrors of Hyperemesis will find this thread useful as a source of support and information.

There's no TMI on here - can't be by definition - and nobody should feel ashamed of moaning as much as they feel the need to.

I used to include extracts from MOH's wonderful website
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/
but I think that makes this link less visible so am merely putting the link. The information on this site is invaluable for sufferers, with information about medications, coping strategies, hospital admissions, useful links, advice for family members, and much more.

I would like to thank MOH and Everyone who has given such invaluable support and advice on this and on previous threads.

Remember when you are at your worst, 'This Too Shall Pass'. It really will.
So many women on this thread have thought they couldn't get through this, but they did.

Whatareyoueventalkingabout Welcome, I hope as you are at eight weeks this is the worst stage. Are you on meds? For sure, you are not being unreasonable in feeling hard done. Vent all you wish.
IWorry It is a dreadful dilemma - are you at the stage where the midwife might find the heartbeat by way of reassurance? Might well be a surprising good day.
Punkstar and MOG and Tallyra Excellent advice on steroids. Punkstar If on meds you can only just manage to leave the house now, you mustn't think in terms of going back to work for a while yet, says mother hen. Never mind about spitting - no choice. Blush Puking into a bin in the street and wetting myself was a thing I did more than once (the bins in Ealing, where I then was, weren't covered, then).
SallyPoor you, it is so hard, nearly there.
Jen The same. It is too bad, that heartburn waking you. Is baby going to be an exercise fanatic, maybe an athlete?
Tevin Every fifteen minutes sounds unbelievably dreadful -hugs. I''m glad others have given such excellent detailed advice, I don't think I can add a thing.

Chaffinch That sounds so horrible. All you veterans who have gone for it again deserve a medal.
Hugs to Meerka Livingzuid Excellent advice, hugs...
I wonder how Exquisite is? Totes?
Apologies to anyone rudely ignored.

Hi all! Just cooking for lunch guests. Still feeling sick and super hungry in between. Can't wait for the end now!

whatareyoueventalkingabout · 12/01/2014 14:11

Hiya I am on prochlorperazibe maleate but it's only taking the edge off. today I am nine weeks. I had a horrific nine months last time and was sick on average ten times a day but didn't take any meds or get any help and I feel so let down by the drs I saw.

I also had high protein levels in my which from reading all of your posts make me think were related to the mornings sickness and should have been picked up!!!!!

I am so worried that all of my concerns will be brushed under the carpet again :-(

Iworrymyselftosleep · 12/01/2014 17:32

what I'm 10w and on prochloperazine. I'm off to the doctors with it tomorrow as I'm in no way functioning. I've been in hospital once so far. This is also my second pregnancy and I had a torrid time last time.

Its grim isnt it?

I'm taking my mum with me to speak up for me at the doctors. Im also going to write things down. Would either of these help?

Have you tried Ondansetron? It works well for most (just not me grrr)

Im finding it very hard to drink anything. It revolts me Sad

LucindaE · 12/01/2014 18:14

Totes My goodness, I bet you can't wait for the end. It's too bad the nausea has lingered. There should be a supply of badges/medals available. There used to be an online icon on Photobucket (sorry about referring to a bucket, ahem) 'Hyperemesis - I Survived'.
What Ten times - you poor thing, it is awful that you got no meds, surviving and staying hydrated must have been so difficult. I sometimes do tests on my non pregnant self when vomiting that much with a migraine and I find that I'll have 3+ ketones in twelve hours.
Meerka's advice about the phone number is invaluable for advice from a doctor on getting meds. With regard to liquids, are ice lollies, jelly, sips of flat coke or the juice of tinned fruit bearable (all normally unhealthy, I know; but it's a case of any liquids, as you well know)? Some find hot water more bearable.Flat Lucozade helped me, but a lot of people hate it.
IWorryIt's an excellent idea to take an advocate, it is so hard to speak when feeling sick. If necessary, and I should have done as I say, not as I did - vomit in the doctor's office.

Lucinda, There was always protein in my wee but they always did it was probably a UTI. I had no idea it was dehydration. I was induced for suspected pre eclampsia and it was only for the protein as I had no other symptoms. I am so buying some of those strips. I feel like a prize idiot for not knowing that the protein could be due to the sickness!!!!

in other more cheery news, I can't tell you all how amazing it is to realise that I am not alone in how I feel. It has made me feel so much better)

Meerka · 12/01/2014 20:04

beign alone is .. well, nothing takes the nausea away. But not being alone really helps the spirit doesnt it.

lucinda you made me laugh out with vomitting in the dr's office. I hope they took you seriously!

what many people are a bit more clued up about HG now (thank you Princess Kate, sorry you had such a rotten time but you did the rest of us a big favour). Some doctors ofc still arent :s but if you can find a good one, they will help a lot. Yeah, try that phone number!

Ruggle · 12/01/2014 20:04

Hello. Can I please join in?
I'm 9+3 after two recent mcs, so a very longed for baby. This will be my first and I'm already 39!
So basically up until yesterday nausea and sickness was bad but manageable. Yestrday I threw up everything I ate and drank. Today the same. Vommed 4 times and another on the way and when not vomming just feeling terribly nauseous. Went to walk-in clinic and they prescribe Cyclizine, but pharmacist told me to avoid it as it's not recommended in pregnancy. Instead she said try ginger biscuits and Lucozade. Anyone have thoughts on this? Is Cyclizine safe? Is there a better option?

LucindaE · 12/01/2014 20:19

Ruggle Welcome, congratulations on much wanted baby, so sorry aout mc's and now this.
sites.google.com/site/pregnancysicknesssos/treatments/obtaining-treatment-1 I hope the information on this website will reassure y ou.
Cyclazine has been used safely for decades for Hyperemesis, and there's no way any doctor would prescribe something not safe. Do take it, and if it doesn't work, the baby will even be safe if you are put on a cocktail ofd durgs, or in the last resort, steroids. You do need meds to cope. Also invest in some kesostix to check for dehydration, available from chemists.
What It's awful they didn't pick up on your dehydration in the surgery last time.
Worry Hugs. Meerka Lol, I wish I had -they might have taken me seriously then! On his shoes, maybe. Sadly, I put that badly - I meant, 'Do as I say, not as I did (which was to choke back the retching). You be sick in front of the doctor if necessary'.
I bet I've cross posted...

Meerka · 12/01/2014 20:20

Hiya Ruggle sorry to see you here, but very welcome!

sigh the pharmacist is not up to date.

Okay, the current recommendations are that actually, if you get serious sickness you start meds EARLY and you do bloody well get the right level of meds. Early and appropriate meds stop the nausea and vomitting getting to bad.

This is recommended by the governmental body that prescribes Best Practice for all medical conditions, Nice : Nice Treatment Goals of Preg N&V. That site also gives you the list of governmentally approved meds.

These meds have been used for many years now (10+, sometimes far far longer) and studies have found them to not affect the babies. Some of these studies are huge, the Danish one on Ondansetron was over 10,000 women (the entire study was of 600,000 women who were preg). So the recommended drugs -are- considered definitely safer than allowing the nausea and vomitting to go on.

There are a couple of really good sites around too, Lucinda MotherHen's OP gives one, the other is here. Also HelpHer is a good US site.

But in short, cyclizine, usually prescribed with B6 at the same time, is the first line of meds and the safest. So you can tell the pharmacist that you were recommended it by the doctor and that the NICE clinical guidelines recommend it. Hopefully she'll give it you then.

Good luck!

Meerka · 12/01/2014 20:21

grins i cross posted with you!

Ruggle · 12/01/2014 22:32

Thanks ladies
Unfortunately I have previous experience of a toxic reaction to a drug that is approved by NICE, and for which I was told "side effects are very rare" but ended up with damaged nerves and tendons and in a lot of pain for two years, all because a doctor thought I "might" have a urine infection....so I'm very reluctant to take meds of any type, and what the pharmacist said has really worried me. A lot of the "rare" side effects of Cyclizine mirror those I had after Cipro (hideous antibiotic) so for me I think it's best I avoid.
I'm seeing a nobs consultant on Tues so will ask his advice and see if there's anything more innocuous I can try. I feel soooo sick though, and need to be in work tomorrow. Commute is going to be hellish!

Ruggle · 12/01/2014 22:33

Erm, obs, not nobs!!

MurderOfGoths · 13/01/2014 00:18

The pharmacist sounds like a prat tbh

Tallyra · 13/01/2014 07:31

Hi Ruggle, I'm sorry you are here. I can see how worried you are about meds, and seemingly for a very good reason, but please don't worry yourself. Not taking the meds may well result in you being hospitalised even quicker than without, and they really have been tried and tested. Cyclizine is the first in a line of different meds, and it didn't work for me, but I was then put on metoclopramide, ondansetron and phenergan as well as steroids(prednisolone). I had no long term side effects (I know everyone reacts differently), just a bit of constipation which is commonly caused by the ondansetron and the sleepiness from the phenergan which was welcome and acne from the steroids. I am now 26w and having had weekly scans to watch out for mc (this is try no 4 for me) I am told everything is normal with baby. Without meds I wouldn't have got out of hospital so quickly or be back on my feet I'm sure. Being so sick is horrible and I really hope you manage to stay hydrated and out of hospital. Xxx

Sally8655 · 13/01/2014 13:30

Well ladies,

I'm off to get my hair done! I'm quite anxious about this and wondering how I'm going to cope. I'm dreading being sick and passing out in the chair.

I have not had my hair done professionally for over a year due to my M/E and then hyperemesis. I know it sounds silly but I'm getting butterflies thinking about it. I used to spend 5 hours in the salon every 3 weeks before I got poorly a few years back.

I'm hoping to get something easy to style and low maintenance colour. Smart for hospital photos but long lasting as ill probably not get another chance for quite a while when baby arrives.
Known my luck my waters will go while I'm there and ill have to leave half way through!

Meerka · 13/01/2014 14:55

Sally have fun :) I got mine done for the first time on Saturday after oh, 8 months? one cancelled appt then the sickness hit and I realised I was preg.. wasn't able to go since then.

Oh it feels sooo nice :) The best bit was hairdresser was 33 weeks preg, I hadn't known =)

Sally8655 · 13/01/2014 15:05

Can't wait meerka, so far so good. Not too much nausea and I'm the only one here so completely pampered with ice water etc.
Just waiting for hair to develop so not long now!

livingzuid · 13/01/2014 15:28

Enjoy Sally!

No words of wisdom Ruggle but I think they are basically antihistamines aren´t they the first ones? Mine has worked wonders, ooh must go pick them up Blush today has been a write off!

PunkStar · 13/01/2014 17:17

Happy haircut Sally
I cheated and had someone come to my house the other day as no way I could face a salon...first time I've had a mobile dude. He was ace so I lucked out.

I got a couple of pamper session vouchers for Christmas which I can't wait to use but don't think it would be enjoyable yet.......hoping soon.

Lucinda
:-( I think you are right about work, it's so frustrating, had a load of emails today for some work coming up in Feb and March but I daren't take it in case I'm still poorly and I have to let them down. Must be more patient.

Sally8655 · 13/01/2014 17:28

Yay, i got through it and didnt puke. Hair looks and feels lovely, she reckons as I've got some darker tones put through I should get about 3 months out if it! Now that would be amazing :-)

Feeling a bit rough now though, dh is making me dinner so going to try and chill now, only thing left to try is shave legs. Have no idea how I'm going to reach! Xxx

MurderOfGoths · 13/01/2014 18:33

Bet it looks lovely Sally :)

I used to get DH to shave my legs at the end of the pregnancy - so romantic Wink

LucindaE · 13/01/2014 19:35

Ruggle Excellent advicie from Tallyra Meerka and others. What a frustrating situation. Dare I ask how commute went?
MurderofGoths I love that trenchant comment on the pharmacist!
I don't see why pharmacists don't liaise with doctors, rather than leave it to patients, if they query the prescription.
Meerka Grin re cross posting.
Sally I'm glad all went well at hairdressers, if legs have to be neglected. After all your sufferings, you deserve a little treat like that, or a big one, like winning the lottrery!

PunkStar Smile Mother hen is glad you are taking the advice about not forcing yourself back to work too early (clucks and flaps).
Jen I hope sleep a bit better?
IWorry and What How are things going?
Apologies to anyone ovrelooked.
xx

Meerka · 13/01/2014 20:01

ruggle, if you can handle the nausea and vomitting then fair enough. If not, then hopefully a doctor can give you a prescription for meds that do not have similar effects to the rare adverse reaction from the antibiotics. Metoclopramide might be one to avoid.

Iworrymyselftosleep · 13/01/2014 20:32

Meerka tell me about metoclopramide.

Guess what I was prescribed today?

I've held off taking it as I want some guidance on how long to leave between the last dose of prochlorperizne and the first dose of metoclopramide as the patient information leaflet name checks prochlorperazine by saying a serious reaction could occur if you mix the two :-/

I've also had a blood test for iron and fbc as I'm getting puffed even going upstairs. Any one had any good tips for boosting iron? Any easy to stomach ideas?
