Following on from ice skating: skiing at 8 weeks?

I was going to sit out skiing this season but I'll only be 8 weeks for our first trip in 2 weeks time and the ice skating thread has got me thinking it'll be okay. I'm a pretty confident intermediate skier. It's early season so it won't be busy.
Would you do it at 8 weeks? The next trip will be when I'm more like 13 weeks so I definitely wouldn't do it then.

Lol at 19 mos. Take 'em sledging. Grin

Fwiw, my baby has brain damage. Not related to my skiing fall. But those who are saying 'you will always wonder' are damned right. I was 13 weeks. Parental guilt is a bitch without adding to it. Grin

We ski where they have pagers at the nursery for bf mums - my second was in the daycare at 11 weeks and they just paged me when he was hungry. Grin. I don't recommend that either, tbh. Too many germs from different countries. Grin

My BIL started at 14 months. Why not?! It's just to get them used to the feeling of being on the little skis. Lots of sledging as well of course!

Nancy I hope you have a great holiday, whatever you decide!

Tough call, I had a group ski trip booked when i found out i was 8 weeks pregnant. My midwife advised me not to ski, I lasted one day on my own in the chalet then hired skis for the remaining week. I was already missing out on the Hot tub and Après Ski I was damned if I was going to miss all the fun!

We're only going for a weekend so I suspect I'll just hang out with my DD (maybe she'll be on skis!), drink hot chocolate and enjoy the mountain air. The DH can get his snowboarding fix on his own. There's always next season providing we still live so close to the mountains (four hour drive).

I am due to go on a family Xmas in a high resort in France and both of my doctors have advised me not to travel as I have had several mc's btw not sure who mentioned taking their 19 month - I have a 2.5 DD and we can't even hire skis for her as they don't allow under 3's on the slopes or to learn - France might be different but thought I would mention this if it helps

Tiredemma · 03/12/2013 18:48

I skied at 17 weeks.

greentshirt · 03/12/2013 18:51

Oh I didnt know that panic! We are planning on teaching our baby as soon as he is old enough. Learning to ski as an adult was the worst thing I have ever done, I want my baby to be like those confident mini skiers you see everywhere!

panicmechanic · 03/12/2013 19:01

I know I planned we that too. But before 3 you can't book lessons or get insurance in France - I have phoned all of the ski schools in the area and got the same response. They said 4 is ideal as they get less cold, can communicate, pick themselves up and put gloves back on etc. maybe other countries have different rules.

LynetteScavo · 03/12/2013 19:01

I skiied at 8 weeks, but didn't know I was pregnant. I think at 8 weeks you'd be fine if you took it easy.

Skiiing was less dangerous than the nursery sports day several months later, When I was elbowed out of the way fell over.

marzipanned · 03/12/2013 19:02

You can definitely take kids of any age on the nursery slopes in France. I have cousins in France and all their kids have started around age 2. The ski schools won't accept them until they're 3 and potty trained, but there's nothing to stop Mum and Dad taking them.

The hire shops probably don't have small enough skis - thread on snowheads about the best type of thing to get here snowheads.com/ski-forum/viewtopic.php?t=43884

marzipanned · 03/12/2013 19:03

Sorry x-post panic.

Greentshirt you can take them out yourselves though. All they will do at that age is slide back and forwards a bit, but it gets them used to the feeling of having skis strapped on.

panicmechanic · 03/12/2013 19:07

Marzipanned - thx for the info. The guys in val d sere and chamonix said we couldn't do this so if we can that would be good.

marzipanned · 03/12/2013 19:15

Panic you definitely can in Chamonix! Not sure about the insurance - but if you just wanted to take your DD on one of the nursery slopes in the valley (i.e. one of the ones accessed on foot rather than in a telepherique) and give her the experience of sliding around a bit then that really shouldn't be a problem at all. I've seen it done many times - and have also seen parents taking toddlers and carrying babies. Plus a lot of the little ones sledge on the nursery slopes... IME the French are very good at getting kids started young. All in all, don't be deterred!

NomDeClavier · 03/12/2013 19:25

We'll pop DS on skis if we go this winter. He'll be just too young for ski school unfortunately but I'd have out him on last winter if we'd gone at not quite 2. We're undecided only because DD is due soon and all being well I'd board (am a crap skier) 10 weeks after an uncomplicated delivery but otherwise not and I'm not missing out again.

madwoman where has pagers for BF mums?! I was thinking a ski nanny but am happy to chuck her into crèche for half days. She'll be going to crèche PT as soon as ML is up a couple of weeks later so germs inevitable!

panicmechanic · 03/12/2013 20:01

Thanks Marizpanned, we will defo try

The paging for bfeeding mums sounds mental!!! Your baby cries...wants milk... You get paged and go thundering down the pistes like a mad woman, lactating breast leaking everywhere arriving about 30 minutes too late for the poor sprog! Still, I can see its better than missing the skiing xom

Still, I can see its better than missing the skiing completely! Re:toddlers skiing, I started at 2and French babies go from 18 months so I think 19 months is fine to start! I want a ski brat child for sure!! They can't do ski school so I will just do nursery slopes with her. Cant wait! Will be adorable!

madwomanintheatt1c · 04/12/2013 05:29

Lake louise. Grin

It's not just for bf mums, it's for the entire nursery. If you get a good run down the front face, you can stop right outside the door Wink

We used a ski nanny in Austria. Unfortunately she was supposed to be 'English speaking' but could barely manage 'hello!' The intricacies of handing over a 2 yo with additional needs to someone who had no idea at all what you were talking about were a minefield, so that lasted about a day and a half.

My son also stood behind the check-in counter at Tiny Tigers at Sunshine for three and a half hours, removing to move. We took him out at lunchtime, there was really no point him being there. Some places work, others don't - you have to be flexible. (Dd2 loved Tiny Tigers. They taught her to play basketball before she could walk. Ds was unimpressed.)

NomDeClavier · 04/12/2013 09:53

DS is super adaptable and could go to either French or English speaking childcare or have a nanny which speaks either so I'm not particularly worried about finding somewhere that'll work for him, it's more DD. I'd leave bottles of EBM but if the crèche is convenient then why not be paged Grin Sounds like a great idea but I don't think I can persuade DH to take a transatlantic trip for it! We're more likely to drive down to Chamonix or somewhere near there.
