Third trimester insomnia

I'm 29 weeks pregnant and for the past week or so I just haven't been able to drop off to sleep. And if I do I get up at least twice for the loo - think I made about 10 trips last night. It's really starting to bug me as I was sleeping like a log until recently. I've only put on about 8-10lb and don't have a huge bump yet so it's not that I can't get comfortable - it's just that I can't sleep! We live on a main road but we have double glazing and the noise never bothered me before but it does now - weird. I tried valerian tea a couple of times and whilst it used to help before it doesn't any more. I'm very aware that I have only 11 weeks of being able to get a full nights sleep left so any tips that'll help me drift off would be much appreciated!

Cariad. I'm 36.2 and it get worse I'm afraid.
Loads more nocturnal wees and waking up for no reason then taking ages to get back to sleep.
I've tried Pukkas night time tea for this reason but the effects soon wear off!
I've found when I wake up at daft o'clock that a mug of ovaltine helps me drop off for a bit as well as a couple of biscuits.

Hi, I also stopped sleeping around 28 weeks and developed dreadful insomnia that lasted 2 years (brought on by having a baby with sleep problems too!) What helped me sometimes was liquid calcium, it's quite soporific and you can find a decent dose of it in Horlicks. I would also have half a Nytol occasionally to help get me off to sleep.

I do feel for you, and I hope you have a baby who's a good sleeper !

Well at 38 weeks today I'm not sleeping either.

Been awake since about 2 am and know I will want to drop off to sleep again at about 6 when I need to be at least thinking about getting up. Haven't slept properly all the way through this pregnancy. Occasionally get a week where I have 5 or 6 good nights (just wake up for the loo several times but always go straight back to sleep) but then a couple of rubbish nights follow and I am back to feeling like death.

I think it's nature's way of getting us ready for lots of sleepless nights once the baby is here!

No suggestions, but still struggling with it at almost 39 weeks. I've felt better since I've been on maternity leave as I find I can drop back off between 5-6 and 8-9am. I've stopped fighting it now, and get up for a short while which helps a bit. Lots of sympathy from me!

I'm the same. 31 weeks. I go to sleep ok but then wake up with rib pain and can't get back to sleep. I've been wide awake since 1.30, thank god for iplayer downloads on my phone, or I fear I'd go insane.

No idea how I'll get up for work in a few hours.

sympathies.

I am suffering too, except I am not even in the third trimester yet so I am dreading it getting worse! Right from the outset I have had broken sleep. I have no problem getting off to sleep; I just don't stay asleep. Iplayer and mumsnet are my friends at the moment! Roll on maternity leave... Sadly no tips from me but happy to try any suggestions. Hope it improves for you.

I had insomnia the whole way through, and there are now some nights with a newborn that I get more sleep than when I was pregnant.

I didn't find anything that really helped reliably, but don't let it make you feel stressed and get your sleep when you can. One thing that sometimes helped was deep breathing (also helpful for early labour). Deep and slow breaths counted for six to eight seconds did help me to relax at least. Otherwise, I read the news a lot - tried to make myself tired.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy. .

39 and 3 and if one more person tells me 'its getting you ready for when baby gets here' or to 'sleep whilst I can' I will not he accountable for my actions!

Since about 30 weeks its been getting slowly worse, on the plus side I've used the time I'm awake to get pretty much all of my housework done and am super organised. My best advice would probably be to get up, keep busy and then get back into bed when you start to feel sleepy or you get into a habit of just lying there wide awake. I also found making little 'to do' lists helped me control too many thoughts wizzing round. Try not to drink too much in the evenings, I was peeing a similar amount of times but found that cutting back on the amount I drank after 6 in the evening has helped cut it down to two or three bathroom trips!

I've been a bit poorly these last two days and ended up pretty much sleeping none stop for 48 hours! So hoping that is some sleep debt paid back ready for labour! (although seem to be back to insomnia now!)

I hope you feel better soon and manage to get some sleep, it really is horrible. Thanks

Fasterkillpussycat · 02/12/2013 04:35

Ah yes everything - I love getting helpful comments like that too! "Better get some sleep now before baby comes". Well yes, some sleep would be wonderful but you seem to be ignoring the fact that insomnia is not by choice. Grrrr.
