I had my 35 week appointment with my obs on Friday and she commented that there was a lot of fluid around the baby - I've been hearing this from midwives and the obs team for the last 4/5 weeks but no one has said anything else about it.

She asked had I been for a GTT, I said yes. She told me I'd need a reapeat one. Then she said that I have a condition called Polydramnios, it can be caused by gestational diabetes or it means that my baby has a blockage in his/her digestive tract. I was shocked and started to ask a few questions and she sort of shook her head and said she wasn't willing to discuss anything until she knew if I had gestational diabetes or not and that I was to make an appointment to come back in 2 weeks.I was hustled out the door by her minion and left standing in the waiting room like an idiot.

I had a GTT that day, I'm not diabetic. I was given no information about polyhydramnios so I did a bit of googling and it sounds fairly shit. There was warnings about what to do if my waters were to break and a long list of complications that could quickly result in the death of my baby - cord prolapse and placenta detatching.

I'm furious at her for not talking to me about the condition, especially when I have been in hospital for early labour - had steroid shots and a few days in being monitored. I'm really worried now, this pregnancy has not been easy and to have a doctor refuse to discuss a condition I have with me has really stressed me out.

Does anyone have any knowledge about / experience of polyhydramnios? Is there any advice you could give me? I am really freaked out.

I'm sorry I have no real advice but didn't want to read and run. I appreciate the doctor wanted more info before diagnosis but you shouldn't have been shoved out the door like that. Can you ring your midwife/antenatal team and ask for an urgent appointment to discuss or even your GP? Hope you get some answers soon that will put your mind at rest.

I had polyhydramnios with my last pregnancy. There wasn't anything physically wrong with him but it meant I could be induced on my due date due to being so uncomfortable and plagued with braxton hicks.

The only worry was the waters breaking I case of a cord prolapse and they're careful when breaking them.

When they do break them though.. tell her one pad is not enough
. It went up my back and waterfalled off the bed.

Honestly don't worry and step away from Google. Sometimes it's just one of those things

I had it too - and like the previous poster there was nothing wrong with DD (and no gestational diabetes either despite the doc testing & retesting and refusing to accept the test result), and the only concern was cord prolapse. But again all that meant was that when I got to a check up a few days before my due date they wanted to induce.... and then when they realised I was already 5cm, I wasn't allowed leave and wait to see what happened, I had to be monitored for a few hours and then they broke my waters (DD2 was born 45 minutes later Grin)

That said, I wouldn't take our word for it that it's nothing - I'd be a bit annoyed at the way you were treated and I'd definitely ring your midwife and see can you get an early appointment or can someone put your mind at ease a bit over the phone until you have your appointment.

I'd be more than a bit annoyed at the way you were treated. How dare they refuse to give you information about what might be going on with your baby and body?! I am not from the UK, and have heard stories like this before and find it baffling that doctors think they can treat their patients like toddlers. They know you're going to end up googling and freaking yourself out as well. I would without a doubt complain, and loudly.

I'm sorry you're going through this OP. I hope everything works out.

I had this too, and was induced a week before date "just in case". There was nothing at all wrong with DS, but the general opinion was that it was safer for my waters to break there than at home (agree you will def need more than one pad Smile )

It doesn't seem at all right that they won't even discuss it with you, can you go back and ask for second opinion?

Hi ladies,

thank you so much for all the info, this is why I love Mumsnet. I have been a bit of a nervous wreck throughout this pregnancy - especially with the early labour and hearing this on top of everything else was just the final straw.

I have stepped away from google, but I couldn't help myself when I got home from the hospital. When I read the bits about cord prolapse and risk of placental abruption I panicked because I had problems with my placenta in my first pregnancy - undiagnosed placenta previa, I haemorraged (sp?). The placenta was huge and extremely calcified and not working so DS came out having lost a lot of weight in the time leading up to the birth.

My placenta in this pregnancy is monitored constantly incase it starts to shut down again, so I can't understand the doctors logic that I shouldn't be aware of any problems that polyhydramnios might cause. She was just so dismissive and spoke to me as if I was an idiot, she seemed to be annoyed that I would have questions for her and was really not interested in answering them.

I'm going to see my GP this week, she's lovely and will set me up with an emergency appointment with the team - they can be really hard to get appointments with otherwise. I would quite like to throttle my obs the next time I see her, she has a reputation for being a bit abrupt but she was just rude on Friday.
