Cough from hell.

I'm 26.3 weeks pregnant and for the past 5 days I've been suffering with the worst cough I've ever had. It all started with a sore throat - 2 days after my flu jab. I don't know if this is coincidental, or not.

Night times are the worst with the hacking every few seconds or so. Was so tortuous last night and I was coughing up bits of blood.

I spoke to Dr on weds and she said there's nothing I can take except for paracetamol and if it was really bad, she'd be able to prescribe antibiotics.

I hate taking drugs - especially when pregnant.

Does anyone have any words of advice? It's really getting me down.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

I suddenly got asthma while pregnant. Triggered by a cold and sore throat. Coughing til I vomited and / or wet myself. Unable to sleep. Dr gave me puffers which helped a lot. Stopped as soon as the baby was born. My obstetrician said pregnancy does strange things to asthma, it can make it go away, or appear for the first time. Severe coughing making you wet yourself in pregnancy is a predictor for longer term post natal incontinence apparently.

I'm just getting over the most god awful cough I've ever had. I couldn't cough up any phlegm despite clearly hearing it rattling around. I didn't sleep for about 6 nights coughing. Dr said it wasn't on the chest & not a lot could be done.

I googled clearing phlegm from throat and came across the 'huff technique'. It's a flippin miracle! You breathe in & out all the way a few times, emptying your lungs then breath in about 75%, shape your mouth like an 'o' and breathe out sharply as if you were misting a mirror about 3 times, squeezing your upper abs. Try it! It makes you feel a lot better for a while until you need to do it again.

Thanks for the replies.

I managed to find some Vicks, so dolloped some on the bed and, have to say, my night was better - coughing-wise, anyway! My throat is still very sore.

Hope it wasn't a fluke - will Bicks again tonight!

*Vicks, obviously.

It wasn't your flu jab - it's not a live vaccine so it's just a coincidence.

Hope you feel better soon. If it's any consolation, cough medicines tend to have no effect anyway, so you're as well off with hot water, honey and lemon.

I'm always extra anxious about vaccines, Anything.

Last year, when I had the flu jab at 28 weeks pregnant, I started contracting the same day and ended up in hospital with the threat of a pre term labour.

I have the flu jab this time and end up with the worst cough of my life. The HCPs told me this no correlation between the two, but, I just don't know :(

Im 36+4 an have had the cough from hell too. I havent slept in a week, between, the cough, the weeing, the heartburn, Im so miserable.
Since last night I have had a really strong pain on the right side of my throat, I think is linked to the coughing? Its so hard to describe but it hurts when i talk, eat, drink and is really bad when I lie down.

I put vicks on the sole of my feet + socks every night. I down pints of boiling water with honey and lemon... I guess it helps a bit?

I would love more suggestions too !!!

Good luck to all of you coughing ladies out there xxx
