Craving pate... Any good alternatives?

So I've got my beer belly just about satisfied with blue Beck's. Am eating lots of chocolate and biscuits to make up for the no rare steaks (not eating them with peppercorn sauce or anything - just ensure that my taste buds are indulged.).
But I have a really hankering for pate and I know that's a "contains bad stuff for the baby" food not a "could might just possibly make you ill" so was wondering are there any good alternatives? Can I eat spreads like the wonderful smoked salmon and cream-cheese stuff Marks and Sparks sell?

i thought the reason for no pate was the liver and the vit a? if it is that then are there some tht aren't made with liver??

not sure if that's the only reason tho

Charingcrossbun · 30/11/2013 10:33

Ah - just googled - you are right bundaberg the vitamin a comes form liver. So potential a farmhouse pate might be ok. There is the risk of listeria with all pate (even vegetarian - what is a vegetarian pate? Surely it is just a dpi until it is made with real vegetarians?) but it is super low - 147 cases in the uk in total last year 27of them preggos. Getting in my car and driving to work is statistically far more dangerous.
Perhaps if I find a non- liver pate and eat it but don't leave it in the fridge to eat the next day too....

French pregnant ladies eat pate, and soft cheeses, and wine Hmm
I had a little bit of duck pate at a wedding when 26 weeks... it was yummy! And a glass of champagne Wine Grin

Watching with interest as there's nothing I wouldn't do for a packet of pate and a French stick! I'm avoiding for same reasons as you, food poisoning risk is one thing but birth defects is a whole different game.

Let us know what you find!

Sainsburys do a really nice mushroom pate, which I'm pretty sure is fine - and so tasty :)

I on the other hand accidentally ate quite a lot of goats cheese yesterday... Blush it was supposed to be baked, but it definitely wasn't hot all the way through was bloody lovely though dh made me feel awful :(

I keep seeing this stuff about French pregnant ladies eating pate and soft cheese, my dh is French and his parents sent us a bundle of pregnancy magazines to read. They all advise no pate and no soft cheeses.... I do think though that the French as a whole are probably less strict about following rules so maybe a lot of their pregnant ladies ignore the advice.

I had a recipe for the most lovely mushroom pate. I'm veggie anyway and it was made for me at a lunch and the meat eaters scoffed most of it!

I absolutely LOVED the chicken and chirozo pate from Tesco before i was pregnant. Really disappointed that I can eat it anymore but I am intrigues at this mushroom pate….. assuming it's safe that is

ooooo, warm french stick with a massive smear of pate!!! i'm drooling haha

You can eat rare steak by the way - anything dangerous is on the outside and killed when sealed. What you mustn't have is a rare burger (why would you) where the meat has been churned through and the germs are throughout.

mmmmmm tartex

I love these anyway and ate them a lot when pregnant.

stevie77 · 02/12/2013 18:53

Misty on the NHS website it says goats cheese is fine. Enjoy!

I've eaten loads of Boursin and smoked salmon with cream cheese

Make your own pate at home Smile Avoid recipes containing liver (vitamin A too high), but a smoked salmon pate, for example, should be fine. And you control the freshness (far fresher than even the poshest stuff in the shops) and the preparation conditions.

As you say, non-liver pate is mostly to do with listeria risk. And that risk is fairly minimal and the foods we are told to avoid don't necessarily have materially higher risks than the ones we happily eat.

Yum!
