I'm being induced for the 5th time tomorrow with dc7. I can give you both good and not so good stories for my induced births and I can give you a good and not so good story for my 2 spontaneous labours (dc2 & dc3). As you're on dc3 I would expect the doc or midwife to assess your cervix, which given you're on dc3, will probably be favourable for ARM without needing gel first......(if you've had a section they'll probably not want to use gel and may say you must have a section but I had one consultant who said they would give me one lot of gel despite having a previous section)..this has been the case for me with dc4,5, 6 and now. Once you're waters are broken they'll monitor baby and then leave you for a couple of hrs to start contractions. After that if you're not doing anything they'll (depending on your labour history i.e. c'section or not) start a drip of hormone to get you contracting. Hope this helps!! I'm very nervous about tomorrow despite having done it before!!! Good luck!!

Hi. I was induced at 38 weeks with both mine and had positive birth experiences. DC1's was especially good.

I had the gel thing the night before and shuffled about half the night with period-type pains. Not much action the next day until they broke my waters and dd was out in 40 minutes. No drip, no forceps or ventouse, no stitches. I actually enjoyed the labour.

Ds' was similar, except they gave me gel in the morning. I had a few hours of leg and bum ache (no, I have no idea), then they broke my waters and he was out in less than 30 mins. Again, no further interventions. Only thing I found with him was that the contractions were so thick and fast that I had no time for even gas and air, could not concentrate on anything and could not subsequently remember the birth. However, he was out in record time and I do not recall any real pain, either.

Hannahwillo88 · 28/11/2013 22:43

Oooo good luck for tomorrow hope its over with quick, I went into labour naturally with my previous 2 dc and my second labour was only 3.5 hours start to finish with no pain relief so would hope for same again but very unlikely I know, I have heard all these horror stories abt people being in constant pain and how awful the drip is :-( tryin to prepare my body now to make it abit easier but I don't know if it will make any difference.

Thanks for your reply and good luck x

Mine was fine, very uneventful, no horror stories here!
The thing is, you are going to hear more horror stories as they are the stories people want to tell. The ones which are uneventful don't get talked about because there is literally nothing much to tell!

Hannahwillo88 · 28/11/2013 22:47

Op that sounds really good and how quick was that I have to be at hospital for 7.30am so hoping I deliver the same day and I am hoping as it is my 3rd dc it will mean I progress quickly just don't want the drip if I can avoid it
Thankyou

Back again! I've never needed a drip...once waters have broken my contractions have started by themselves....dc6 was a bit scary though as very fast and her heartbeat all over however cos it was so quick we avoided a section.

Hannahwillo88 · 28/11/2013 22:52

Glad to hear more positive stories for induction made me feel a lot better hopefully things go well for u Tomorrow and me in 3 wks time Smile

I had the drip for DC3, but once it kick started the contractions, they turned it down and she was 45 min from first contraction to delivery :-) stitches took longer...

We went in at 8am and were home with baby by 8pm.

BonaDea · 28/11/2013 23:13

I was induced at 37+6 and it failed completely. Nothing happened at all. So I had a completely un-rushed cs and I have a beautiful, cheery and utterly gorgeous son.

I worried so much about induction. It wasn't my ideal scenario but I have my ideal baby. Swings and roundabouts, eh?

Good luck!

Clobbered · 28/11/2013 23:15

Induced at 41+5 with DC3, one pessary, had the baby 8 hours later. Easy-peasy.

starkadder · 28/11/2013 23:21

I was induced at 37 wks due to problems, went fine, all sorted and my lovely baby in my arms by half past three (they started at 9am).

Also, a consultant has since told me that in his experience, inductions where there are issues (ie not for overdue) tend to go quickly. Your body knows what it needs to do. The horror stories tend to be more from people who are past their due date.

Good luck!

ringing · 28/11/2013 23:26

Good luck, induced with Dc1 with drip. Following DC's without any intervention. Although the induction was very long the 1 to 1 support from a midwife from the outset made it one of the best experiences. I had lots of attention from the midwife and when necessary, the consultant, so felt very safe throughout the whole time. With an induction you will get lots of medical attention. At the end of the day it won't take more than a fixed amount of time before you have your beautiful baby and since it's not your first you know how wonderful it will be to have your baby to hold. All the best

Bellasbundle · 28/11/2013 23:28

5 years ago today I was induced at 39 weeks with my first dc, had the gel at 7am then few niggles but nothing much, I was warned that being first child and before due date it may take coupke of gels, but checked at 4pm and they broke my water, cue constant and fast contractions but baby before 7pm with gas and air, no stitches. It was very intense but less than three hours :-)

Ilanthe · 28/11/2013 23:36

I had one at 38 weeks, also due to difficult pregnancy. It was a dream. Pessary put in at 3pm, he was born at 5 the following morning. Very easy, no interventions, the pessary got me going and I didn't need the drip or anything else.

StrawberryGashes · 29/11/2013 00:12

I was induced with my 2nd child. I was given the drip and 45 minutes after the drip was put in my arm (and a lot of gas and air!) I was holding my daughter.

TarkaTheOtter · 29/11/2013 00:20

I was induced at 38 weeks with dd and it was fine. Quick and intense but I felt well looked after an had an epidural immediately when I requested one. Totally natural delivery with only 8mins pushing.
I'm doing it all again in 4 weeks and if it goes like that again I will be very pleased.

Toowittoowoo · 29/11/2013 08:45

Lovely to hear about some positive induction stories. I'm going in tomorrow at midday to be induced with DC2 at 41+6.

Really lovely to hear people saying that it can be okay. I agree entirely with the PP who said that people tell the horror stories because there is a story to tell and it feels better talking about it!

Thanks for sharing

Ragwort · 29/11/2013 08:52

It depends what outcome you want I suppose Grin - I requested an ELCS and was refused, I was then induced and it didn't work so I had a crash CS - personally I was delighted Smile - I was completely knocked out and by the time I came round I had a lovely baby. My DH was quite worrked but I was oblivious to the whole thing. I have no regrets at all.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 29/11/2013 08:58

I was induced at 41+3 with DS2 due to a failing placenta. It was okay - main issues were because it was so fast I didn't have a chance to get used to the contractions increasing naturally. All very 0-60 and painful as a consequence. IIRC I was put on the drip around 12ish and had DS2 (very unexpectedly, MWs had gone for a cup of tea and poor DS2 ended up bouncing on the bed!) at just after 4.

nannynome · 29/11/2013 13:31

When you were induced did you all have epidurals? I keep being told that the pains come on a lot harder and so epidural is better. I didn't want an epi but am going to be induced because of GD and PGP issues. Any thoughts, experiences?

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 29/11/2013 13:53

I didn't, but I wouldn't have done anyway (I hit too many of the warnings to risk one, plus I like the minimum stay in hospital afterwards and epidural screws that up) I had G&A* for mine. It didn't hurt more than my other labours - it was just more intense in a shorter amount of time so harder to deal with.

*TBH, I actually had a pethadine shot at the end too, but they misjudged my labour so badly that by the time it actually worked (takes 30 minutes) I'd already given birth...

Toowittoowoo · 29/11/2013 14:07

I had an epidural with DD1 but it was a LONG labour so I'm not sure there was much option to be honest. After 4 days of pesseries etc I was still only 2 cm dilated when they started the drip and broke my waters so I had a long way to go.

This time round I am already further forward and I'm not even in hospital so I am assuming that it will be very different. I imagine with you as well it will be easier as this is your DC3 - so your body is going to know what to do and be more flexible to start with.

When I was in hospital being induced with DD I saw lots of women coming through the ward and many only needed one pessary and it kick started a natural labour.I'm hoping I'll be one of those women tomorrow!

I have to admit that it was quite frustrating last time the few women who came back to see me as they were being discharged with their beautiful babies and I still hadn't even started dilating! Pah!

TarkaTheOtter · 29/11/2013 16:28

I was induced because of gd and in advance thought I didn't want an epidural but am glad I did have one. Because of the drips and continuous monitoring I was on my back anyway so the epidural didn't make me less mobile. Also, with gd I had to stay in for 24hrs after the birth anyway so that wasn't a consideration.

My epidural was very light touch. I could still feel to push and got up an hour after the birth to shower without any problems. Also didn't need a catheter or anything like that.

I don't think you can compare different labours with respect to how painful they are. Depends on so many different factors that even someone who has had an induced and a natural labour can't tell you which YOU will find more painful. You don't have to decide in advance just see how you feel at the time.

PenguinsDontEatPancakes · 29/11/2013 17:16

I don't have a story myself, but have two friends who had speedy, uneventful births after induction with DC2. Apparently your body does it a lot easier if it isn't your first.

Toowittoowoo · 30/11/2013 22:59

I can now give you a positive induction story from today! Went in at miday, was monitored and examined by midwife, I asked loads of questions and got really detailed answers. The pessery was put in at 3pm and contractions started straightaway. Pessery was removed at 6pm, got taken to the labour ward and baby girl born at 6.40pm. I only had gas and air, baby has since feed lots and is now asleep next to me!

Amazing, so different from last time!
