Heartburn like I've never experienced before

So for about 3 days I've had heartburn constantly to the point were I feel a really sharp burning pain in my chest.

Even feeling like some thing is stuck and slowing moving down. When I feel this it's agony .

I've tried gaviscon but it's not even slightly helping. Any tips

Call your GP and see if they can prescribe you something for it over the phone ( if you get free prescriptions? Not sure it's the sane everywhere)

I got peptac liquid which is far better than gaviscon. Mines pushed past the stage you are at and its constant reflux ( almost 35 weeks) so I'm taking smaller doses more regularly. Some people get omeprozole but I can't take it.

Bluecarrot · 28/11/2013 20:11

Obv if they can't do it over the phone, make an urgent appointment or ask your chemist - here in NI some can write you basic prescriptions

How pregnant are you?

Haribolover · 28/11/2013 20:14

I found mint sweets like Fox's clear mints really helped.

Ranitidine is better, but IME a pharmacist is unlikely to sell it to you OTC. Your GP can prescribe it though.

Don't want to panic you but severe persistent heartburn can be a sign of pre eclampsia. How many weeks are you?

whereisthewitch · 28/11/2013 20:31

Second ranitidine it was prescribed by my gp and a total life saver. I have a huge stash in my cupboard waiting for the day the nausea stops and the heartburn starts.

PassTheCremeEggs · 28/11/2013 20:32

Get a ranitidine prescription. It's amazing, my only regret was I didn't get it earlier. Totally sorted out my heartburn which was unbearable, and I didn't have to drink any more gaviscon straight from the bottle...

SweetPea86 · 28/11/2013 20:49

I'm 20 weeks I've been really constipated finally went to loo about hour ago I just thought I was totally bunged up. I'll make app with doctors tomorrow.

Is 20 weeks to early for pre clampsia

If you get any other symptoms including swelling, visual disturbance, headache, vomiting, racing pulse ring OOH's to be on the safe side.

Definitely see your doctor and ask for ranitidine (sounds like it works!i could do with some Grin)

SweetPea86 · 28/11/2013 22:19

I haven't got any other sysmtoms just crippling heart burn, just persevering with gaviscon at the mo and will go see doc tomorrow thanks for help ladies xx

I had to try omeprozole before getting something stronger.

I bought renatadine OTC before that and rotted my teeth by going to bed with a couple of Rennie in my mouth each night.

I took all the damn drugs at the same time and STILL it was hell.

StarlightMcKenzie · 28/11/2013 22:34

Started at 5 weeks in all my pregnancies, along with sickness (that thankfully subsided from 20ish weeks).

StarlightMcKenzie · 28/11/2013 22:34

Gaviscon has the texture of spunk!

catellington · 28/11/2013 22:45

I used to have Rennies. They were the only thing that helped. I literally tried everything else

CrispyFB · 29/11/2013 12:28

Omeprazole cleared mine right up - it started at 7 weeks with the same symptoms as you describe. Gaviscon helped for about ten minutes. Rantidine did nothing. But I'm on omeprazole 20mg once a day and heartburn has not been an issue since. Occasionally I try missing a dose but within a few hours I can feel it coming back, so I know it is working.

I'm 23 weeks now and fed up of pill popping but the alternative..

It's prescription only and my GP did it for me over the phone, half an hour later I'd picked up the script and had it in my hands at the chemist. That day I absolutely loved the NHS to pieces!!

WallaceWindsock · 29/11/2013 12:32

Ooh I remember the hell that was heartburn. Used to give up and be sick in the end which always helped. Look at your diet. From about 5 months in with both pgcies I had to really avoid spicy or greasy, fatty, carby and stodgy foods as they gave me awful heartburn. What have you eaten lately? Anything spicy or fatty? It gets better when baby drops but you've got a whole before that happens and ime the bigger the baby gets the worse it gets as there's more pushing up on the stomach.
