So im 8 weeks pregnant with dc5. I am always under consultant care due to a blood clotting disorder and have the same consultant and midwife now as when i had dd4 so both are already aware of my medical history and necessary treatments etc

I had my first app with my midwife tuesday which was fine. But tonight just before 9pm the midwife phones me and says that my platelets are 49 (ive had lower) and that my consultant needs to see me (because of the platelets) asap can i come tomorrow.

I agreed but as soon as i got off the phone i started to worry there is something wrong that she didnt want to say over the phone. Ive never seen the consultant before my 12 wk scan or even had the mw phone me to tell me what my platelet count is.

Has anyone had anything similar happen? Im worrying that maybe my blood results dont match up to the number of weeks i am

Thanks in advance

Just try to hang in there, you'll soon find out what's going on.

I'm pretty sure if the midwife said it's your platelets then that should be the real reason, not something that they are holding back - which would be pretty bad medicine.

They are provably just following a Protocol which may have changed since your last pregnancy.

Thanks for the reply. You are of course totally right! Think i may have lost the logical part of my brain last night lol

I hope all goes well, they are probably just being extra cautious.

LastOneDancing · 28/11/2013 09:36

Good luck for today - I hope it's something straightforward. Fx

Thanks for the replies. Everything was fine. My consultant wasnt even there today, my app was made by his cover who infuriated me no end. I had to politely argue against to get him to listen. he asked me how i got pregnant! He meant did we have an accident! Commented on dd4s cradle cap and asked why we arent treating it (we are, its actually much better than it was). Then told me i will see him for the duration of my pregnancy and said that we will discuss changing my treatment plans etc!

I made my next app on the way out and requested my usual consultant. If i dont get him i will be leaving without seeing any1

Sorry for the rant, im stil fuming!

ah you poor thing mamachelle - that worrying for nowt! sounds like this covering consultant is very unsympathetic and frankly not a good communicator. I'd be raging if he said those things to me. You did the right thing booking your original consultant and here's hoping they don't make a hash of it and you will get them - if not carry on insisting, I would!

LittleBairn · 28/11/2013 19:27

Wow that's totally out of order mama I would have walked out the minute he asked how I got pregant it's none of his bloody businesses and doesn't have an impact on your medical care!

mamachelle · 29/11/2013 10:40

Definitely not a good communicator. Wondering how he got to his position talking to people like that

I wished i had have walked out but i was too shocked to speak lol

heres to hoping i dont get him at 12 wks

thanks all

hi there
I hope you don't mind me contributing to this thread - I have antiphosophilipid syndrome and noticed you said you had a blood clotting disorder like me

I just wondered what treatment are you taking and if you have to take it for the whole 9 months and if there are any side effects from the treatment? Do you need to be monitored by a specialist for the duration of the pregnancy? I am in the dark and not been given much information at all about this so any advice you had would be great

sorry to hear of your consultant stress. I had a similar experience with a consultant and it really shook me up how rude and unprofessional they were - I agree with you and really wonder how people get to reach these positions

really hope you get the other consultant back again - fx it goes well for you :-)

mamachelle · 29/11/2013 11:48

Hi! I just googled your condition (hope you dont mind) and i think you have the opposite problem to me. I have thrombocytopenia, my blood doesnt clot well.

Are you pregnant now? Do you always have this condition or only in pregnancy?

my condition is there all the time, and i dont have to have treatment unless im having surgery, have an accident give birth etc.

During pregnancy, i see the haematologist (have you had such an app) and have regular blood tests to keep track of my platelet count and then take steroid tablets from 36 wks to increase my platelet count and thicken my blood so i dont bleed excessively and also, some anaesthetics can only be used if the platelet count is above a certain level so this gives us options should an emergency arise.

other than that, its fairly straight forward for me. The consultant liases with the gp,midwife, haematology, paediatrics and the anaesthetists.

The thing is though, im having dc5 so although i am fully aware now of the ins and outs, i too was also in the dark for a while until i met a new haematologist who took the time to explain it to me.

Have you been given any info at all by any1?

Hope that makes sense lol

I'm being a cynic, but 12 weeks would be right on top of Christmas.

Consultants don't want patients anywhere near Christmas Wink

isitnearlyteatime · 29/11/2013 12:07

thanks so much for all the info mama - that's so helpful

Im only 4 weeks so very early
I wasn't on any medication for it before but told that I would need blood thinners after a bfp

not seen anyone yet or been given any advice so feel totally in the dark about it all
hoping I will get to see someone fairly soon to start the process
don't know how any of this works!

mamachelle · 29/11/2013 12:17

:) starballbunny! Im so not with it, i had to check my calendar lol

isitnearly - might be worth giving your gp a quick call, if thinners are required soon after a positive test he/she should be able to advise or prescribe meds
