Daft question alert; Can I eat Royal Icing?

I was just googling how to make Royal Icing for the Christmas cake and realised its made with raw egg whites.

Is it safe for me to eat this, being pregnant?

Yes! Eggs aren't really a problem anyway as all lion-stamped eggs come from vaccinated chickens Smile

Thanks Smile

I'm not usually so worried but have made an effort to avoid eggs even though I know its daft really.

go on to nhs website or another trusted site to be sure. im not be littling anyones advice but you need to be sure for yourself from a 'proper' source.. as in you cant be too careful

Powdered pasteurised egg white is often added to icing sugar to make royal icing, which I assume would be fine while pregnant. However it can also be made with fresh raw egg whites. Best ask the person who decorated the cake...?

nhs still advises against raw/partially cooked eggs in pregnancy. Egg should be cooked until the white and yolk are solid

ilovepowerhoop · 26/11/2013 21:38

you can buy pasteurised egg whites

firsttimekat · 26/11/2013 21:43

I hadn't even thought about this so thanks for making me look! My main concern with my cake is all the brandy I put in it - I mad and have been feeding it before I found out.

firsttimekat · 26/11/2013 21:44

Made obviously not mad. Although I am mad as I love Christmas cake!

downdownupdown · 26/11/2013 22:04

So can I just replace the raw egg whites with pasturised egg whites and follow the recipe the same way?

I would imagine so. Why not google for recipes using pasteurised egg whites

NoComet · 26/11/2013 22:35

Never done it for Royal icing, but pasteurized egg white powder works brilliantly for Peppermint ice, which isn't much different.

(Didn't want the brownies messing about with raw eggs, before the new standards were brought in).

NoComet · 26/11/2013 22:38

You didn't need a special recipe. Egg white powder says how much to make up to equal one egg white.

You can also get Royal icing mix, which I guess is basically ready mixed icing sugar and pasteurized egg.

Opheliabumps · 26/11/2013 22:41

Dr oetker do pasteurised egg whites, i use them for royal icing as I often use it on biscuits for church/school fairs, and don't want to make anyone ill!

Also the tate and lyle royal icing mix uses pasteurised egg white so is completely safe.

Well done you for making christmas cake, i spent my (twin) pregnancy with my bum firmly on the sofa demanding DH cook for me Grin
