16 week MW appt - weight gain worry!

I've got my 16 week appointment tomorrow and I'm scared I'll get a big fat talking to from MW for being so big & fat...

Last year I was 17st7, lost 5st to 12st 6, and then when I conceived 12st 13. My BMI was 29, so MW ok and straightforward MW led care etc.

However for the last 2-3 months I've eaten everything in sight... And I'm now I would think 2 stone heavier... Though damned if I'm stepping near the scales.

I've no discernible bump and just podge making clothes not fit

Has anyone else had similar 1st trimester weight gain?

Will MW weigh me/ recalculate BMI, move me into a higher care category? Lecture me?

If I'm truly honest I'm proper disappointed in myself... I had hope to keep the weight off at least for a few more months.

All comments welcome!

I wasn't weighed at my 16 week appointment. She just dipped my urine and checked my blood pressure. However, my BMI was only 20.7 when I got pregnant so she wasn't concerned and probably had no medical reason to measure me again.

I hope you get away with it too - but even if you do get re-weighed and get lectured, just take it in your stride and nod in all the right places. I'm sure you aren't the first woman to have eaten everything in sight Smile

Standard procedure in uk is to only weigh at booking appointment unless there is cause for concern.

Without wanting to lecture you, it's really worth trying to get your diet under control. I did similar to you last pregnancy - ate everything I normally avoided or limited, gained 5st overall and never managed to lose it (DS nearly 3 now) and I honestly feel incredibly lucky that I didn't develop gestational diabetes. Start eating normally now and you can minimise the weight gain over the rest of your pregnancy.

I get weighed at every app! My bmi was 25 to start with so borderline overweight (on their stupid non-hip-friendly charts) but my midwife still makes me hop on the scales and then lectures me that if I get close to a three stone gain I will NEVER lose one stone and my life will be over. I honestly think its all she cares about.

Can I just say no, don't want you to weigh me..?

MrsVDB · 26/11/2013 08:07

My bmi was 34 at booking in and haven't been weighed since and I'm under normal care :)

LastOneDancing · 26/11/2013 08:11

I'm 20 weeks & have put on 2st too OP. It's the carbs I tell you! I've spent 15 years watching every bite to keep tabs on my weight and it's been hard to see it go down the pan because I can't live off my usual staples of pâté and soft cheese!

But now I have lost the urge to eat everything in sight I'm much more sensible, and hoping to slow down the gain. I'm also staying positive that I will get it off fairly quickly afterwards as I'm a seasoned dieter Smile

I also haven't been weighed since my 12 week scan, but there's no point avoiding the issue. In my case that would only make it easier to say yes to the cake.... Smile

I've got a raised bmi but the only reason I was weighed again after my booking in appt was because I've lost 2 stone due to awful morning sickness (which still hasn't fully gone away at 22wks). So the midwife weighed me again because of concerns about how quick it was dropping off and it means my bmi is lower than booking.

I suspect unless you make a big deal about it she won't weigh you. Plus you could always refuse to be weighed. Its really difficult when pregnant to be restrictive, I know I gained more than I would have liked in my other pregnancies. This time I think I've cracked it as I've managed to stabilise my weight but I had the help of feeling like death warmed up for weeks on end! Be kind to yourself, one thing that won't help the weight gain is stressing yourself out :)

Pinkbell123 · 26/11/2013 09:03

And OP don't worry too much about early gain, I think it will even out. I put on heaps in the first 15 weeks but can't eat as much now so am just putting on baby weight gain

Tomkat79 · 26/11/2013 09:42

Hey OP massive congrats on your weight loss of 5 stone. That's amazing. Be a little kind to yourself now and don't stress them scales! If she asks you to step on then politely tell her where she can shove her scales.

I have a wardrobe full of every size from 8 to 20. I lost 3 stone and conceived in March this year at 12 stone. A miscarriage and 3 months later I'm 14 stone and conceived again. At the booking in apt I had a BMI of 30 and am on diabetes watch! But she doesn't seem overly concerned otherwise...if she dared try and lecture I'd quite happily remind her that her tunic is busting at the back seams and I'd poke her visible muffin top!

Try and be sensible where you can. I'm full of good intentions but find that the food I plan on eating is rarely the food I can stomach at mealtimes.

Most of all don't stress it. Our bodies rarely let any fat go during pregnancy, preferring to store it on our hips in case there's no food around after birth! Don't know if planning on fb but that helps it melt away afterwards.

LittleBairn · 26/11/2013 10:26

You don't have to be weighted if you don't want to be nor do you have to take a talking to like your a little girl. Stand up for yourself.

Iwaswatchingthat · 26/11/2013 10:37

I got weighed at sixteen weeks as they needed my weight for the blood tests they ran at that time. Think it was for downs and spinabifida. Not sure now though as was several years ago.

You have done really well losing weight before OP. You might not have gained as much as you think anyway.

Please don't worry.

My last 2 pregnancies I was a couple of stone overweight with both & I must be honest with you I did come across some rude medical professionals.. In particular the sonographers Hmm

My last pregnancy in 2001 I think I was about 12 stone for my 12 week app my midwife was lovely (but a very large woman herself) maybe that's why she didn't lecture?!! But on my scan notes in did say scan was not clear because of increased BMI & when sonographer asked assistant to write it she worded it that a had a large apron on fat around my abdomen Confused which did sting a little as I had worked hard to lose 4 stone previously to that !
My obstetrician was nicer & she said oh you do carry your weight in your tummy but you have such lovely slim legs!! Grin That softened it somewhat.

My weight was not mentioned after that & I don't think hindered my pregnancy at all I sailed through!! But be prepared some medical people can be brutal Hmm

princesscupcakemummyb · 26/11/2013 15:07

got weighed at booking never got weighed again after that

TransatlanticCityGirl · 26/11/2013 16:46

I have never in either of my 2 pregnancies been weighed - MW simply asked me at my booking appointment if I knew how much I weighed, calculated my BMI (24 first time around, 26 second time) and we never spoke about it again except when I once asked about normal weight gain.

I have to admit however, I'm surprised that you don't even want to look at the scale or at least have the facts with regard to what your weight gain could mean to you. While I think that everyone is different in terms of weight gain and I don't read BMI and all that stuff as gospel, I weigh myself several times per week - partially out of curiosity because I have an analytical mind like that, but also because it's a lot easier to cut out the bad habits if you keep on top of things.

In my first pregnancy I gained 35lbs in total (over a 42 week period). In this pregnancy I'm at week 16 and have gained 2lbs thus far - a lot less than last time but I have a very healthy diet and started off a bit overweight and the guidelines say 15-25lbs in total is normal for my starting weight. So 2 stone in a trimester sounds like a figure I would want to understand a little bit more about.

LadyMedea · 26/11/2013 17:24

No matter what you shouldn't get a lecture! We are all human and deserve respect and compassion. I was only weighed at booking and 28 weeks and due to horrendous sickness I haven't put on much weight but that's just luck not deliberate.

Normally I'm the first to say that weight gain is not something to worry too much about in pregnancy but 2 stone in your first trimester might be something to think about as if you continued at that rate you would up the risks for you and baby for gestational diabetes and hypertension. Talk to your midwife they may be able to offer you support.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

So surprised to see a different MW today after the previous one had explained how they like to maintain consistency of care etc... Anyway since this one hadnt seen me 8 weeks ago she couldn't tell I'd porked out and I did feel able to say I was worried about weight gain in 1st Trimester

She was fab she wasn't overly concerned by my estimate of 2stone on, and just said to eat healthily and balanced and exercise and keep an eye in it. Apparently I won't be weighed until 36 weeks when it's time for birth plans etc

Anyway I was a big brave girl and went to boots to weigh self after appointment. In total since conception I've gained 18lbs in 14 weeks, now obviously that's quite a lot, but much better than I was expecting!!

We are off out for a meal tonight to celebrate our 6monyh anniversary. Baby due just before first wedding anniversary so I don't expect to be able to go out then!! Once we've had a nice meal I'm going to try proper hard to eat healthy and balanced (ie less crisps/ biscuits and butter) at least until Christmas party season... Ummm a week or two then

Hopefully if I can keep my weight fairly stable for a few weeks/ hopefully most of second trimester I shouldn't be too far off the 2.5-3stone gain the MW said should be a max. Hurrah!!
