Nuchal fold test today - someone make me step away from Google!

Hey all!
Had my 12 week scan today and I'm 13+1.
Nuchal was 2.7 which I thought sounded high.
Saw the bloods / midwife lady after (who randomly turned out to be a girl from school) and she said that anything under 3.5 isn't concerning and it's going to be slightly higher as I'm almost 37. Had the bloods done and they said they'd call in 3-5 days if there's a problem. If not they'll write.
Now Google is obviously a minefield but one interesting fact is that the further past 12 weeks you get the nuchal fold is bigger anyway as it grows in proportion to the baby.
Also some stuff about the nasal bone? Now I'm studying the bloody scan picture! Someone advise me please (or slap me, either one is fine!) Smile

Stop. Google is great when you actually have something, but just going round and round looking at stuff is a nightmare. If they didn't raise any concerns at the scan, then stop stressing. I honestly think that sonographers know what they are seeing IYSWIM. If they said nothing then you have nothing to worry about.

Step away Grin

Prior to my 12 week scan I was obsessively reading about nuchal scan folds!! Thankfully my measurement was 1.3cm and they told me if there were any problems they'd ring in a few days but if not they'd just write to me with my results. They never did write to me though, I only found out my result when I saw my midwife about 5 weeks later Hmm I took the approach of 'no news is good news' but do chase up your results if you can't stand the 'not knowing' Grin

Welcome to being pregnant where all you seem to do (well at least me anyway!) is worry.

I worried about the HIV test big time, I worried about the Neuchal screening, the 20 week scan, etc, etc. I am 36+3 and still worrying! All I will say is stop thinking about the neuchal screening. If you have a low number then great but even with a high one it doesn't mean anything. Even if the results came back with a risk of the baby having DS at 1 in 200 it doesn't mean your baby does have it.

Put google away and focus on nice things.

I had a private n fold scan at 12 weeks 1 day. It measured 1.3.

When I had an NHS n fold scan 2 weeks later it was over 2 (the hospital threw a wobbly and said they wouldn't 'trust' bloods and measurements from a private scan - even though I had it done at the feral medical centre who pioneered it!).

They said it does get bigger the further on.

Writerwannabe83 · 21/11/2013 09:48

1.3 like me then loopy - just being nosey, what did your likelihood ratio come back as??

PrincessKitKat · 21/11/2013 09:50

Agree with all the PPs. Step away from Google!

You only have half the info at this stage. The measurement means nothing without the blood results, apart from you baby already being well within the limit, which is great!

Sit tight - I was told they'd call within a few days if there was a problem, so started to relax after about 5 days and was very happy to get my letter about a week after the scan Smile

walterwhiteswife · 21/11/2013 09:54

I didn't have the test. I worried all thru my pregnancy and had gd!! was scanned loads and hooked up to monitor alot!! Looking back I was a tad overought!! ds is now 7 now I worry about different stuff!!!!

loopylouu · 21/11/2013 09:57

writer Have my notes in front of me.

Private scan says Trisomy 21 adjusted risk 1:7293, Trisomy 13/18 adjusted risk 1:13350.

So that was the risk after the measurement at 1.3mm and blood tests. I am 33 years old.

CrispyFB · 21/11/2013 10:01

Mine was 2.7mm at 12w1d. However my bloodwork was absolutely awful (bHCG level of 5.43MoM when it is supposed to be 1-2MoM) and combined with my age, also 37, I had a risk factor of 1 in 5.

According to Harmony (plus an indepth anatomy and cardiac scan at the FMC) baby has typical chromosomes.

The thickness IS thicker the closer to 13w6d you do the test. They really do only start worrying at 3.5mm and above and even then there is often a benign (or even no!) explanation for the thickened fold.

At 13+1, that's not a terrible measurement.. not great obviously, but not hugely raising the risk. My 1 in 5 would have been a 1 in 16 if I'd had an average nuchal fold.. my high risk was driven mostly by my shoddy bloodwork.

When I screened positive (1 in 60, crap bloodwork again) with my last baby on the NHS, they rang me a few days later. If you haven't heard anything by this time next week just give them a call for reassurance as they will have the results back by that point I am sure.

Writerwannabe83 · 21/11/2013 10:04

At least you got good odds then Smile I can't believe the NHS Trust didn't want to accept the results from a Private Clinic though? How odd! All turned out right in the end though! I had my 20 week scan with a Fetal Development Centre but my Nuchal Fold testing was done in the normal midwifery led scanning department.

loopylouu · 21/11/2013 10:10

Writer my hospital are just odd. As soon as you mention doing anything private it seems to get their backs up. I had my 20 week scan at the hospital, but I am having it again privately as I was told nothing about placenta previa that was picked up, no info at all not even when I have had episodes of bleeding.

Emberlina76 · 23/11/2013 19:50

Hi ladies
Sorry, only just had a chance to get on here.
Thanks for all of your posts and reassurance. No news yet so hopefully that's good.
I've been anxious the whole pregnancy having had a MMC, MC and ectopic and when the scan was fine it just focussed me on something else to worry about!

That's normal! Especially with a previous sad history, you find you always need something to focus on to worry about.. there will be something else before too long! The anatomy scan is a whole can of worms after all.. and just wait until you feel movement (or less of it, argh!) I think it's the brain's way of trying to get some sort of control over something that is frustratingly completely out of our control.

The reality is, post 12 week scan, 98-99% of pregnancies end just fine with a healthy baby at the end Grin It is very hard to "just relax" though, never managed it myself..

catameringue · 23/11/2013 23:43

Hi,
My scan showed nf at 3.1 which they said was a bit high, and then four days later they called to tell me bloods put my risk at 1 in 30.

Im 18 weeks, and obviously news was sad, but otherwise baby appeared fine on scan. Nothing has happened, baby is currently plodding along as am I.
Fwiw if the hosp are worried, you get offered the usual tests but also an in depth scan with a specialist which is more comprehensive.

Please try not to worry about these things. You will make yourself upset and anxious and you need to look after yourself too.
