Breech baby at 33 weeks- how likely will it stay this way?!

Am 33 weeks, had midwife appointment today.
Baby is breech- I had figured this out as most kicks have been low down in pelvis.

Midwife didn't seem bothered & said baby will most likely move. I had planned to ask re speaking to a consultant about the chances of having an elective CS.

Up til now I'd been keen on the birth centre but the closer things get the more frightened I am with the endless possibilities that can happen in labour.

In some ways I'm not at all upset at the thought of the baby being breech- with the implication that baby would be delivered by CS, this has made me feel quite relieved.

I know for a fact that I would not consent to an ECV or want to attempt a VB with breech baby.

How likely is the baby to continue in a breech position? Should I push to speak with a consultant about potential delivery options & use that opportunity to discuss CS?

Loads of time to turn. Look up spinning babies and do some inversions. Mine was breech at 32 and now head down and engaged at 36. Don't start worrying about it yet (but do try the inversions).

dimdommilpot · 20/11/2013 19:29

Loads of time to turn. DD was breech until 38 weeks and turned the day i went for a scan to check. Dont worry just yet!

amandine07 · 20/11/2013 19:34

Ahh thanks for the replies but I'm not actively looking for techniques to make the baby turn as I'm starting to think I would prefer to have a CS anyway.

I think my question is more- how likely is the baby to turn if I continue as normal ie do not do spinning babies, turning techniques etc.

Kind of going against the grain of most breech threads that I have searched out on here!

I think the op is hoping baby stays in breech position...if I read her post correctly.

Op. Its like stage fright every one feels like you leading up to the birth.

Try & relax. Take each day as it comes.

Shellywelly1973 · 20/11/2013 19:36

Sorry op cross post!

amandine07 · 20/11/2013 19:51

Yes Shelly thanks- I would like the baby to stay breech!

I know lots of women have been devestated by being told baby is breech & they need a CS.

As for me I'm most definitely the opposite...very much hoping baby stays breech & so I can have CS. Just wondered how likely it is to stay that way, I know it's pretty early on there are several weeks left til birth.

Not sure re stage fright- prior to finding out I was PG I always joked that I would go for a CS. I've tried to get into the 'natural birth' vibe & tried to get my head around going to a birth centre but I don't know if I want to anymore.

I'm a bit either extreme- natural birth or a CS- the thought of instrumental delivery or episiotomy scare me shitless and I really don't want it to happen to me!

However I realise that you don't really get much choice...that's why an elective CS would be more preferable.

My baby turned breech at 37 weeks and didn't turn.

Thesebootsweremadeforwalking · 20/11/2013 20:08

DD was breech at 32 weeks (confirmed by scan), by 36 weeks she had turned. I did nothing to actually try and turn her in the meantime. IIRC the sonographer said she had a 40% chance of turning spontaneously, but I don't know where that figure came from.

amandine07 · 20/11/2013 20:27

Who knows, it seems very much a lottery!

I read about women on here walking around at home on all 4s, doing handstands in the pool, using the spinning babies website....I completely understand why they are trying to get their babies to turn.

As for me I'm totally the opposite & hoping my little one stays breech!

DC3 was breech at 33w, transverse by 36, head down thereafter. No intervention but lots of OFP.

Fingers crossed for you.

HoratiaDrelincourt · 20/11/2013 20:29

Oh and for what it's worth I "get" the "fully natural or fully CS" thing. My mw thought I was insane Grin

Had a very woo home hypno water birth in the end, but if I'd gone over dates (ie 42+) I would have been requesting elCS. From one extreme to the other.

lotsofcheese · 20/11/2013 20:31

My baby was resolutely breech from 20 weeks onwards (I was scanned at least fortnightly, sometimes 3 times weekly as I was high risk). She never moved from that position.

At 36 weeks she needed to come out, so it was a c-section.

IMO, it really doesn't matter how they come out!

amandine07 · 20/11/2013 23:35

Horatia
That's really comforting that somebody gets what I'm on about!
I've seen a different midwife every appointment so I don't feel I've built any rapport up in particular with anyone.

The one today was lovely but didn't really get where I was coming from regarding all natural or CS.

Tried to explain that I wasn't aiming for a vaginal birth "at all costs"- if intervention was needed I'd rather have a CS than induction possibly leading on to instrumental etc but she didn't really understand.

Majority of women seem gutted at the prospect of a CS- I for one felt major relief at even the glimmer of a chance I might need one!

Have to add- I'm training to be a GP and was just finishing an obstetrics & gynaecology job when I found out I was pregnant.

I've seen a bit too much I think...nobody can say "oh relax it'll all be fine".

Have tried to get my head around the birth centre natural approach but it's just v frightening- I'm more scared of going to labour ward as you're on much more of a 'conveyer belt' there, much quicker to intervene if you're not progressing to set timescales!

OP, I'd decided to reject an ECV if it came to it and opt for the elcs too. My MW seemed to think that was entirely reasonable, or at least she didn't let on to me if she didn't. But that was more to do with rejecting the ECV or vaginal breech birth, despite being at a trust with an extremely good track record for the latter.

However, I was really quite relieved when I found out she'd turned, TBH,

stopgap · 21/11/2013 01:49

Mine turned at week 36, too, after spending the entire pregnancy head up.

Tiredemma · 21/11/2013 09:40

DC3 was breech, I declined ECV and was pencilled in for ELCS on monday 9th Sept this year. I went into labour on sat 7th and DD was born by EMCS that night. Right up until the last minute they scanned to see if DD had turned- if she had then they would have me deliver vaginally (even though I stressed that I had 'mentally' prepared myself for a section)

froubylou · 21/11/2013 10:03

I have a breech baby at the moment. Been either breech or transverse since 28 weeks. Flips between sides as well and am 36 weeks tomorrow. I have another scan on Monday and will be booked in for a elcs if he is still breech. Which he is at the moment.

I think I will be worried if he has turned that he will turn back. and that I end up with an emcs. So will sort of be relieved if he is still breech.

And having had a elcs with dd 9 years ago I know what to expect. And I would much rather have a simple elcs than a vbac with complications.

amandine07 · 21/11/2013 13:33

Thanks for the replies- people generally seem to know their baby's position from fairly early on!
MWs I have seen up til now have made no mention of it, until yesterday.

I'm sure baby was transverse over the last few weeks- I could feel firm lumps either side of abdomen i.e. Head & bottom, and with limbs high up.

Tiredemma
If I was booked in for a CS I'd be worried about being scanned at the last minute & finding baby is no longer breech and being made to have a VB despite being 'mentally' prepared for a ELCS.

I do understand that a CS would effectively no longer be indicated but it's tough when you are prepared for a CS and actually not wanting a VB at all.

Scary how very few women seem to actually get what they want in childbirth e.g. those wanting a homebirth ending up with CS, others averse to VB fighting for a CS and ending up with a VB they really didn't want.

Scary stuff but trying not to overthink it!

Hi, i’ve just stumbled across this thread and I am 33 weeks and just like you want a c section.
My babies head is under my ribs and is back to back. I have a midwife appt in 2 weeks where hopefully they’ll let me know my options, i’m going to decline an ECV.
How did you end up getting on? Did you have a c section or did the baby turn on its own in the end?
