Bad behaviour before BFP

Just got my much longed for BFP but am now freaking out about all the things I have done 'wrong' since my last period. Mainly some pretty heavy drinking and taking ibuprofen / ibuleve and cough medicine. Oh and I've not been taking folic acid and I drink loads of tea Sad I initially tested BFN which is why I carried on as normal but now I feel awful. It's going to be ok isn't it? Can I be extra specially good now to make up for it? Any reassurance gratefully received!

It should be, it happens to a lot of people. Before I found out about dc1 I drank loads and smoked weed every night. I found out at 10 weeks and obviously stopped right away. No damage to him as far as I can tell!

I also know someone living the student lifestyle who found out at 8 months and her baby is totally fine.

The placenta doesn't function for those first few weeks so the odd drink etc before you get your BFP is fine, it won't have been passed to the baby.

LittlePeaPod · 19/11/2013 08:26

You should be fine. The placenta doesn't start functioning till you are about 9/10 weeks. Therefore none of the alchol will have enter baby's system. Instead of the placenta the baby survives on its own egg york till the placenta takes over.

Congratulations on your BFP..

Congratulations and, as others have said, don't worry! I've been told by my midwife that the placenta isn't fully formed until 12 weeks, and I know from my early scans that there wasn't even a cord till nearly 8 weeks and the yolk sac was still very much visible then. Don't worry - your baby won't have got anything 'nasty' from you.

Julietee · 19/11/2013 09:21

I think you'd have to drink a LOT for it to pass to your baby in the absence of a placental link (as everyone else has said, baby lives off it's yolk sac at first).
Don't panic! I didn't take folic acid before I knew either, I'm sure lots of mums don't.

Phew phew phew and thanks for the replies. It's reassuring to know about the placenta (you'd think I'd know from ds1 but am utterly clueless when it comes to biology!) and unfortunately I can't do anything about it now anyway so I just need to stop stressing!

You will be absolutely fine!! One of my good friends didn't find out she was pregnant until she was 11 weeks gone and she'd carried out lots of 'bad behaviour' during that time many drunken nights out Grin Her baby is due in 2 weeks and has developed perfectly Smile

I'm another one who behaved very very badly before I had a positive test. We had been trying for about 6 months and in that time I had had maybe three drinks BUT in may went to Chicago and New York with 14 friends for a wedding where I basically drank my body weight in Long Island ice tea and beer every day for 12 days. Came home and got a positive pregnancy test within 2 weeks! Turns out I was about 10 weeks pregnant, hadnt had my period but took 4 tests in the two weeks before we left and all were negative so put it down to stress, unusual but not unheard of for me. Now 31 weeks and baby is developing fine so honestly, don't worry you (and baby) will be fine.

Thank you Flowers

I didn't find out til I was 14 weeks so had been drinking alcohol, loads of coffee, taking painkillers and diazepam in the first 10 weeks. I was terrified but baby is developing fine and growing perfectly. Apparently is happens a lot, I was frustrated the doctors and midwives weren't taking my very seriously when I told them but it think they just weren't very concerned.

amandine07 · 20/11/2013 19:14

Seriously, don't stress yourself out about it!

I didn't find out I was PG until I was 20 weeks...drank alcohol fairly regularly, went to gym/exercised as normal, took pain killers, ate all the things you're not supposed to.

Doctors I encountered did not seem bothered at all, just told me to start taking Pregnacare etc.
Now 33 weeks, scans have all been normal & no issues up to now.

Just try to relax & enjoy things
Congratulations!
