Morning sickness and work

Having really bad morning sickness (8wks). I'm not being sick every day, but very close and sometimes am, and am constantly retching. Finding something I can eat is really hard and I'm struggling to eat anyway as it takes forever! I'm suffering from constant, really strong nausea.

I've been at work for two days out of the last ten - thought I was getting better but it seems to have got worse again. I have an hour long commute on a good day, often longer, and although my job is reasonably sedentary I find looking at a computer for ages makes me feel worse.

I just wondered what other people have done in this situation! I don't know whether to go to the doctor and get signed off, so I don't have to worry about it and can rest all day (which helps) - I feel bad being so unreliable at the moment and not knowing day to day if I'll be okay! Cyclizine from the doctor hasn't had any effect.

Any opinions / experiences most welcome! Thank you.

Sorry you're feeling so rough. I was signed off by my GP for two weeks at around the 9 week mark (in both pregnancies). If you're sick, you're sick. I don't imagine you're much use at work if you're constantly throwing up!

EeyoreIsh · 17/11/2013 20:06

Sorry you're having such bad morning sickness.

I was put on reduced hours whilst I had morning sickness. In hindsight, it might have been better to have had time off as I really wasn't able to contribute much!

I thought of it like a bug. If I had a stomach bug that made me as ill as the morning sickness did, then I would take time off.

Is it worth going back to the gp and getting an alternative medicine?

My friend had really bad morning sickness. She pushed and pushed herself because she was self employed. Anti sickness tablets didn't work and she couldn't keep anything down. Even water. After a few weeks it got so bad that she had to be admitted to hospital on a drip.

Hopefully you won't get any worse but go to the Dr. Your health and the baby's health is much more important.
xxxx

I had to have three weeks off, don't feel bad about it. You have to do what you have to do and I found that when I properly rested I was able to cope a little better with it. Poor you, you have my sympathy x

Thereisaplace · 17/11/2013 20:15

Hi,
Definitely go to the doctor and get signed off if resting helps. I would ask on the hyperemesis thread on here for other tips and support.
There is other medication available also.

Hopefully yours will begin to get better in the next month - the constant nausea is awful and I did find acupuncture did help somewhat although nothing took it away.

Just keep trying to eat/ drink whatever you can in very small amounts to prevent dehydration.

My GP was very good and wrote a letter to my manager,so I had reduced hours and workload when I did go back to work later in my pregnancy.

Bkk13 · 17/11/2013 20:16

Oh and get back to your gp and try a different anti sickness, I tried four different ones and ended up on stemitil x

Beccadugs · 17/11/2013 20:20

Bad luck op it so really tough.

Some good advice here.

Only thing I would add is that it might be worth telling your line manager as pregnancy related sickness is recorded differently, and it shouldn't trigger the same absence monitoring procedure in the same way.

PacificDogwood · 17/11/2013 20:23

Get signed off.
Try medication.
Rest and let time pass.

ILoveCwtches · 17/11/2013 20:27

I was nauseous and usually sick first thing, until 12wks, then it got worse.

I dragged myself into work, one Monday, felt atrocious, told my boss that I shouldn't have gone in and went straight home. I had 3 weeks off, in total. 1 week self certified and 2 signed off by the GP.

If you're really ill you can't work. I agree with EeyoreIsh. If a bug made you feel that bad, you wouldn't dream of going in.

Hope it eases off, soon.

icklekid · 17/11/2013 20:40

Can totally relate, some days I find very tough and have thrown up at work multiple times. I find I get better as the day goes on, then worse in the eves. Would going in later and missing rush hour help?

peachysnail · 17/11/2013 20:54

Had terrible all day sickness with both mine. With first the only thing I could keep down was thick porridge. Ended up having one week off at 9 weeks as I became so weak and exhausted. Gradually improved after that.. With 2nd dc had medication which helped tremendously as my first child was only 10months old when fell pregnant.
Wasn't offered anything with dc1; told by abrupt midwife that I'd survive especially as I was "well covered"!
Would suggest as others have to go back to gp and stay home for few days til the worst of it passes. It will get better
Would

Thanks for the advice and encouragement Smile My bosses do know and have been really nice so far; I just don't want to mess them around and I never know from one day hour to the next how I'm going to be. I went in the other day fein okay but by the time the train got in a felt atrocious so turned round and got the train straight back Sad I just don't want them to think I'm taking advantage as it's one of the busiest time of the year!

Hope you feel better soon! I was similar at 8 weeks and stopped working for about 10 days. It really helped not to be stressed on top of feeling sick and in those 10 days I got loads of rest, mostly just ate plain toast every couple of hours, and felt a lot better at the end.

quackojuliet · 18/11/2013 18:21

Glad you got signed off, don't feel bad if you end up going back and being signed off for longer. It takes as long as it takes and you are entitled to time off for this - your body is working hard!

cathers · 18/11/2013 18:33

It's is awful isn't it, and still of of the main factors why I couldn't face another pregnancy. Try and rest and sip fluids when possible, eat whenever and whatever you fancy when you have a window of relief.

Have you tried acupuncture? I was fortunate in that my GP practiced it and agreed to try it after meds failed and as a last bid before I was to be admitted with hyperemisis- it really helped and let me have 3-4 hours relief to eat and drink.
