Hey I'm due in a couple of days time but who knows, will prob be longer than that as my 1st. Anyhow, I heard someone say you shouldn't put baby In snow suit into car seat but they couldn't offer an explanation.... Is this correct and if so what is the reasoning?
Also, if they was In a snow suit In their pram, would you have blankets on too? Or I spose that depends on how cold it gets here... Sometimes I feel totally clueless!! How an earth will I do this!!
Lastly, would it be a bad idea to put Moses basket in the cot at nite for space reasons.....??

The snowsuits in carseats is true, the baby is not strapped in tight enough if wearing a snow suit and would not be safe in an accident.

As for snowsuit in a pram, it depends entirely on how cold it is as to what else the baby would need, they should as a general rule have one extra layer to you, so if you are wearing 3 layers baby will need 4.

I don't see why you can't put the moses basket in the cot.

All this is going on what I've been told by my midwife / hv team. If you have any concerns then ask your midwife /hv. They all have different opinions but most of them agree on health and safety aspects.

Yes you are rite artyone but I don't have much confidence in my community midwife unfortunately. She is quite dismissive and always in a rush!

No you shouldn't, or use thick coats either. the reason being is they are in a pull tight harness. You have to pull the straps on the car seat quit tight. The problem with snow suits and thick winter coats is you can't pull the straps tight enough, without leaving a gap if you then had an accident they could acutely come out of the straps.

The best way is to put them in thin layers and use something like a car seat foot muff or blanket on top after you have strapped them in.

Babies and toddlers shouldn't wear any outdoor clothing in car seats because if there is an accident the padding willl decompress and there will be too much space between the safety straps to hold the baby in place adequately.

The rest is very much up to you! ... you do have to make sure babies dont become overheated as im sure you know :) you just have to feel them regularly and adjust layers accordingly.

Car seats - snowsuits or thick coats decompress in accident and would leave baby not strapped in tight enough so they would move

Snowsuits in pram - just depends on weather. When it's really cold I would have suit and pram footmuff/ blanket.

Moses basket in cot- I think it's not recommended as there's no ventilation? Hence why usually they are on a stand and air flows in through the wicker from bottom and sides
Can you just not buy/ or build cot until they actually need it I save space?

When the harness in a car seat is pulled tightly enough to do it's job properly, you should only be able to fit two fingers between the harness and baby's collar bone. The snowsuits make the straps sit too far away from the baby's body.

As well as the safety in the event of a crash as pointed out above, it's very easy for a baby to overheat as they can't regulate their temperatures, so if you get into car (or warm shop, cafe etc) and baby is in snowsuit they will overheat. Much easier to regulate them with blankets and layers - so annoying if you go for a coffee while baby is asleep and you have to wake them to get them out of snowsuit!!!

Could a baby wear a snow suit in car seat if your just using the car seat on the buggy wheels? It dose same apply for accidents etc?

They can wear a snowsuit in a car seat if it’s attached to a buggy, yes! You aren’t going to crash your buggy at 60mph! Or at all I’d imagine.. ! It’s just when you are travelling in the car! In the car, you should use thin layers, a chunky cardigan is ideal and then you can use blankets. It doesn’t take more than 5/6 minutes for a car to start to warm up!

Snowsuits are really warm, in a pram, you probably just need a thin blanket on top or something. Depending on how cold it is. It’s rarely super freezing in the UK!

Nothing besides a thin jacket in the car seat. Wrap in blankets to make it to your vehicle
