Thanks for posting this. I'm in the same situation, 4 months with very noticeable grey highlights... I've been told by the hairdresser that it's fine, but I'm still sitting on the fence...

TobyLerone · 15/11/2013 17:11

Yes, it's fine. Do a skin test first because your skin can be more sensitive during pregnancy.

ilovepowerhoop · 15/11/2013 17:13

yes its fine. It can affect how well the colour takes on your hair. I once had to get it redone as the colour didnt come out right the first time

According to my hairdresser it's safe to dye your hair anything but black. For some reason black is unsafe. I've not researched whether there's any evidence to back up his claim.

tgamble13 · 15/11/2013 17:42

its safe apparently after 1st trimester. my hairdresser wouldnt touch my hair until i was 12 weeks. have had my hair dyed twice since currently 30weeks. as prev mentioned ur hair may react differently not ur pregners Grin mines has been fine Grin

Stom91 · 15/11/2013 18:06

Yup I've dyed mine after 14 weeks.
Though I found that it didn't go as light so I probably needed longer. (Dyed it blonde) you may find due to hormones the colour comes out slightly different x

sprite25 · 15/11/2013 18:13

I've dyed my hair twice since becoming pregnant using semi-permanent dyes and they've turned out fine and left my hair in really good condition, just make sure its done in a well ventilated area.

greentshirt · 15/11/2013 18:31

Miss Medusa, thats why he is a hairdresser not a doctor lol. NHS advice doesnt mention colour at all

www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/949.aspx?CategoryID=54

If in doubt, for things like this I always revert to NHS advice. Imagine if you had a bad reaction without checking and had to say 'errr well yahoo answers said it was fine!'

Emilycee · 15/11/2013 19:03

My midwife told me it was ok (now 20 weeks) so am booked in next week - bye bye grey hairs!Grin

LateBear · 15/11/2013 20:05

After looking into the safety of it I've been going to the hairdressers as normal ( blonde highlights with neutral tint in between to cover the greys! ) avoided the Brazilian blow dry though.

Waitinggame8 · 15/11/2013 20:11

Just had mine done today - thank god as I was looking horrendous.
Doctor basically told me to seek advice of the hairdressers as it depends maybe on the type or brand.
I let them know a few days ago and they said the brand they use is fine, thankfully!

Inglori0us · 15/11/2013 21:29

There have been no clinical trials to assure safety, but it's considered safe after the first trimester.

Foodylicious · 16/11/2013 14:26

Most allergies to hair dyes are to the parabens in the darker dyes, hence some recommendations not to use black dyes. may women who are not normally sensitive to hair dye have an allergic reaction when pregnant. My sister did with both her pregnancies, though thankfully just skin irritation and redness. i do not know however how having an allergic reaction to anything affects the rest of your body and baby at the time?
Do a patch test or maybe have high/low lights as they should not come into direct contact with your skin.

BroodyTroody · 16/11/2013 14:31

If you have highlights the colour doesn't touch your scalp anyway, so I'd say this would be a better way to go if you are a bit worried! I've just had my highlights done and I was around 12 weeks at the time Smile

stopgap · 17/11/2013 00:52

Or find a salon that uses this colour: www.organiccolorsystems.com/

I've been really looking forward to getting my hair done after I've given birth and although I usually just dye it myself at home I planned to go out to a hair dressers but not until the little guy is a few months old.

After reading this I just wanted to do my hair now being so impatient as I am Grin...I looked up NHS guidance and it says it should be fine, I spent a couple of days deliberating with DH and then today asked my sister who just qualified as a nurse - she said as long as you're not bleaching it and not allergic you'll be fine.

I went out and bought the dye but still felt pretty nervous so I actually read every inch of the box/leaflet (all the English bits anyway) and it made NO mention to if you're pregnant (I'm used to things saying "consult your doctor first") DH says the risk must be very very minimal if they take the risk of being liable for not putting a little warning...

Soooo I went ahead and did it!! 38+3 and I feel great! Smile Really happy results are just as normal and I had no nasty reactions to it at all.

Really glad I did it now rather than wait as I'll look better in those first photos and I won't smell of dye when baby is born...don't want to confuse him!
