Hi - I'm also a bit worried about clothes (I'm 38+3) but I have the following and feel this will be ok for first couple of weeks. All are neutral as we don't know the sex of the baby.

In newborn: around 15 vests and 15 sleepsuits

In 0-3: around the same number of vests/sleepsuits

Also have 2 pramsuits/snowsuits in 0-3, 3 pairs of scratch mits, 2 hats for hospital, 1 outdoor hat and mittens, 2 cardigans in 0-3 and a pair of booties.

Don't forget that people will buy stuff when baby arrives and big supermarkets sell baby clothes so you could send someone out for things if you're stuck.

I haven't got any other outfits yet but I think I'll probably stick mostly with sleepsuits as these look comfy for baby.

Good luck with everything x

I've got 7 short sleeve and 7 long sleeve vests and 6 sleepsuits in newborn. Also got 5 pairs of thinner and 3 pairs of thicker socks. 2 pairs of scratch mittens, an outdoor hat and mittens, and up to 1 month snowsuit. 2 cardis - 1 thinner another one thick fluffy one.

I have been given some more vests and babygros in bigger sizes as baby shower presents at work, but I didn't include them as I would have only bought them myself later on, after the baby is born.

I didn't want to buy lots of newborn things as I don't know how big this baby is going to be, and you can always buy more later. Especially as we don't know the sex too, and it would be nice to go shopping knowing you can now buy certain colours (not that I want my baby all in pink/blue, but people who design unisex baby clothing often lack any imagination...)

I think if you buy a few newborn/0-3 months things you should be fine for the start.

Forgot to add 2 thin hats for hospital...

MightilyOats · 15/11/2013 15:44

I took 3-6m clothes in the hospital bag as I didn't believe a newborn would be so small Grin ds was in newborn for at least a couple of weeks, if not a bit longer, and he was 8 lb 11, so not exactly tiny!

IME short sleeve vests are easiest under sleepsuits, and DS was in sleepsuits most of the time until he was about 3mo. When they're a bit bigger you can go for the outfits (and long sleeve vests are brilliant with rompers/dungarees etc) but they are a faff when they're tiny.

You might want to go for a dozen newborn/0-3 (depending on sizing, they're all different!) sleepsuits as with explosive poos and sick you can get through half a dozen in a day... Grin oh the joys!

Small knit cotton blankets are a godsend when they are tiny as you can put them down on them, wrap them up, layer them etc.

Also useful to have a cardi if its cold, def go for buttons/zip rather than over the head jumper.

We had an Oct baby and didn't bother with a pram suit til he was about 2-3m as they're a bit stiff and difficult to use. Just use blankets.

Handbagsonnhold · 15/11/2013 15:49

Get some newborn gro's n vests. My dd over 8lb and long but 0-3 still swamped her. Take plenty of vests into hosp with you....good luck x

rachyconks · 15/11/2013 15:54

Don't forget you will get loads of presents so don't buy too much. I had about 6 newborn vests/sleep suits and 10 0-3 month. I got bought loads and didn't have to buy anymore until DD was about 6 months!!

havingastress · 15/11/2013 15:55

Definitely get some newborn stuff - 0-3 months is massive! Especially if you pop out a little 6lb one like I did! Also small nappies Grin (remembers DD swimming in her size 1 nappies, I didn't know they did small small ones!)

Scratchmittens are a waste of time/money imo.

Hats - defo

Vests and babygros x12 of each is plenty

Couple of handknitted cardigans. x2 blankets.

Then you need about a million muslins and bibs. That's it Grin

MightilyOats · 15/11/2013 16:02

How could I forget the muslins and bibs? Grin

chillykitty · 15/11/2013 16:05

Dd1 is now 8
Sure I bought loads of the following

Hats
Vests
Sleepy suits
Blankets
Outfits
Tights
Socks

chillykitty · 15/11/2013 16:07

Dd1 was 6lbs 12ozs
We bought newborn suits
Took newborn sleep suit and hat
Hat too small
She was too long for sleepy suit
She weighed 8lbs 7

Hotmad · 15/11/2013 20:54

I had newborn stuff for hospital, DS was 7 pound 12, so not exactly tiny but my DP still had to go and get some tiny baby sleep suits and nappies as the newborn stuff just fell off him!

Mumof3xx · 16/11/2013 08:39

All of my dc
7.8
8.1 and
8.6
Wore newborn, first for a few weeks other two for just a couple.
I had 9 sleepsuits and 9 vests in newborn and 0-3 to start with plus a couple of hats, socks, snowsuit and little cardigan - lots of bibs!

Bloob · 16/11/2013 22:05

I think we had about 15 of vests / sleep suits with dc1 which was ok as she wasn't too sicky. With dc2 I bought some very cute blue ones as we knew he was a boy :o plus were given some etc so we ended up with about 30 Shock

My god was I thankful. 9 would have got us through the first morning. He was sick RELENTLESSLY.

We also got given no gifts really. Either time. Some, but all either in too big sizes or impractical things like dresses / tights or outfits. So I was really glad I'd got them and didn't need to be worrying about washing stuff ASAP or sending DH to the shops. I would recommend buying some cheaply from NCT / eBay. They are SO cheap (I think mine were £2 for 6 immaculate ones) and even if you don't need them it's good for emergency / spares if you can't get stuff through the was as quickly.

NaturalBaby · 16/11/2013 22:14

I got the minimum - a few vests and sleepsuits and a couple of outfits and cardigans. There is a 24/7 supermarket up the road and Mothercare 10mins away so I knew we could get something fairly quick in an emergency.

Anothermrssmith · 16/11/2013 23:10

God I need to get organised soon, 31 weeks and all I have is 3 vests, 3 sleep suits, some scratch mits and 2 hats! Oh and a cardigan my nana knitted! Baby due at new year as well so going to need something nice and toasty for it to wear, problem is I can't find anything (other than vests and sleep suits) that's gender neutral and we don't know what we're having.

HopeS01 · 16/11/2013 23:16

I have about:
10 sleeveless legless vests
12/14 longsleeved legless vests
20 sleepsuits
4/5 'nicer' baby gros (for visits)

In the following sizes:
Up To 9/10lbs
Up To 12/13 lbs
Up To 16/18 lbs

(I found it easier to organise by weight rather than month because the monthly sizes vary between shops!)

So maybe 70 vests and 70 baby gros. I know that is waaaay OTT but I got carried away Blush
I also have lots of hats, socks, scratch mittens, about 15 cardigans, 10/12 pairs of leggings, a couple of warmer fleecey zipups and a snowsuit to get him through the winter.

....aaand a whole wardrobe of dungarees, tops, jackets, booties etc for when he's a bit bigger Grin
