I saw on another thread a few days ago that apparently we can have Stilton Grin Grin

Given it is my favourite cheese, and my fourth baby, and I'm pretty lax about a lot of things (I'll do raw eggs, glass of wine etc) but not cheeses.. HOW DID I NOT KNOW?!! How could this information have passed me by?!

www.nhs.uk/conditions/pregnancy-and-baby/pages/foods-to-avoid-pregnant.aspx#close

Extract:

"You can eat hard cheeses such as cheddar, parmesan and stilton, even if they're made with unpasteurised milk. Hard cheeses don't contain as much water as soft cheeses so bacteria are less likely to grow in them. It is possible for hard cheese to contain listeria, but the risk is considered to be low."

So thank you Thanks to whoever it was who pointed it out. And because I had some Stilton last night with charcoal and sesame crackers and it was officially the Best Thing Ever, I feel compelled to share this information as far and wide as possible. Especially with Christmas not that far away. What is Christmas without Stilton, hmm?

Okay so still no Danish Blue or Roquefort etc but Stilton was always the best anyway Wine

oh my goodness. How did I not know this. It is life changing! Thank you!

ChicaMomma · 13/11/2013 16:23

I'm off home for a big wedge of Stilton on gorgeous salty crackers all washed with a large glass of red wi..... oh wait, all washed down with a cup of tea! DOH!!

The first day of my second trimester i am SO having a large glass of wine!

Geneticsbunny · 13/11/2013 16:33

Off to the cheese shop tomorrow then. This baby sure does like cheese!

LateBear · 13/11/2013 16:36

I indulged the other day, DH doesn't like it so ate the whole lot! It was divine.

CrispyFB · 13/11/2013 16:50

All my babies seem to love cheese. Well, they do when they're inside. They're freaks of nature now they're older and most of them spurn it.. where did I go wrong?!!

Weirdly though, they'll all eat and love Stilton. So that's okay at least!

Wow!! Thanks for this thread Crispy. Read the link and realise I can have Parma ham too!! Yey! Have been cheating madly with runny eggs this time around but haven't done blue cheese. Brilliant news for Xmas..small pleasures.

suedehead · 13/11/2013 20:50

I mentioned this to my midwife - she said 'Oh no, dear. Only if it's cooked'.
Christmas just won't be Christmas without a massive wedge of stilton!
Have decided to follow the advice I prefer... :-)

CrispyFB · 13/11/2013 21:11

I always had parma ham anyway.. love love love parma ham. But from the research I did it seems the way it is prepared when it's the genuine stuff means the risks are absolutely tiny. And they're pretty tiny when it's non parma cured stuff too.

Interestingly the packaging in Sainsburys on the Stilton I bought today says "Not recommended for expectant mothers" - presumably they are either trying to cover their backsides or they never read the NHS website.

Found a shopping list. Stilton and digestive biscuits. ( it was in my purse) Wink

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/11/2013 21:40

Beware, there are many different varieties of stilton. Some are softer than others.
TBF, I sell cheese, and often have a nibble on naughty cheeses. Apparently it has been a LOOONG time since someone caught listeria in the UK.
My sin is alcohol. I never drink, but now Im craving G+T and cider!
I am being VERY strict. One drink a week at most!

puntasticusername · 13/11/2013 21:47

OMG OMG OMG OMFG

I FUCKING LOVE YOU, OP.

CrispyFB · 13/11/2013 22:04

Saggy - you sell cheese?! That must surely be a dream job! I still look back on the years I spent working in Sainsburys as a student and the best bits by far was the time on the deli. Ended up spending my entire wages in there post shift though Blush - working on the tills was cheaper!

True, some are softer than others. I'd guess the not-particularly-exotic supermarket ones would be fine, albeit not quite as nice!

And you are right - the risk of listeria from such things is minute. Trouble is that cheese is lumped in with things that really do carry a reasonable risk, which makes it hard for people to make choices without spending forever reading around the subject for each one!

Isn't it amazing?
I found out last Thursday and have eaten 2 blocks of Stilton since. I've even been hiding it at the back of the fridge so dh doesn't see it and eat any.

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/11/2013 22:18

It has its moments Crispy! The worst is when the first delicious pink sweet smelling vacherin of the season comes into stock and you realise that its not only mould ripened, but unpasteurised too! Its my favourite! Sad

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 13/11/2013 22:20

I sell cheese

FAINTS IN AWE AND WONDERMENT AND ENVY

PS: You can have sushi too

SaggyOldClothCatPuss · 13/11/2013 22:35

Its hard work setting the stall up every day, It is boring and either boiling hot, soaking wet,or freezing cold. Its not much fun really. Especially when you are PG!

CrispyFB · 14/11/2013 00:14

Mmmm.. Sushi. Yep, never held back on that, especially the supermarket stuff that has been frozen beforehand. And I live off smoked salmon at least once a week!

Saggy - I guess like all dream jobs it's still a job and I'm willing to bet it's quite a tough one too! But wow all the same - if I had a stall selling anything it would be cheese and cured meats Grin Just not when pregnant - it must be so hard to stare nice cheeses in the face every day. I find it hard enough just thinking about them, without smelling them and having them whispering sweet nothings just a few feet away. I feel for you!!

I once had a summer job in a cheese shop - best six weeks of my life!
Put on half a stone mind you Grin

extracrunchy · 14/11/2013 01:12

Tomorrow I am buying Stilton and posh chutney and digestive biscuits and I am going to eat all of it.

OP you are my favourite.
