I'm 24 weeks pregnant and have developed a sickness bug. I know it's not dangerous to the baby, but I'm currently unable to keep even water down (trying to take small sips) and am nervous about getting dehydrated. How long do I let this go on before I have to do anything eg dr's, hospital etc? Hopefully it'll pass reasonably quickly but planning in case it doesn't. Thanks.

I would give the midwife a ring in the morning to make sure. Hope you are better soon x

I had a sickness bug at 36 weeks, for most of a day. By that evening i was having spasms in my stomach area and rang the labour ward just to check I wasn't in labour. They asked me to go in to be checked and I ended up on a drip for 12 hours due to dehydration. I felt much better for it actually and it was no big deal for them.

Josie314 · 13/11/2013 02:44

My doctor gave me a document that says to call if you can't keep fluids down for 8 hours.

ZingWantsGin · 13/11/2013 02:52

all good advice.

try to sip cola every 30 mins. it helps.

if it doesn't and you are still sick stop drinking at all - if drinking makes you sick you'll loose liquid quicker that way than what you put in IYSWIM.

call NHS helpline now or hospital/GP/MW in the morning.

I hope it will go soon. poor you, so horrible...

BusyCee · 13/11/2013 02:58

My dear mother used to give us an ice cube in a little dish when we were sick as children. It's cooling and refreshing, and allows you to get small amounts of liquid in frequently, but not so much it upsets your tummy. Hopefully that will help you better through the night

And then yes, contact your MW as recommended up thread.

Hope you feel better soon

Can you manage like warm water? A cup of boiled water made lukewarm with cold water and a spoonful of sugar seems to be much easier on the stomach than anything cold.

I'd give your GP a visit if it doesn't clear within 48 hours, or you're really not keeping fluids down for about 4-6 hours.

I had mild food poisoning at 16 weeks, and i felt wretched. o think i only really ate bananas for three days. Hope you feel better soon.

redcaryellowcar · 13/11/2013 04:43

i had sickness bug around 18wks and ended up passing out as blood pressure low anyhow and dehydration just made it worse, try to keep someone else around if you can, i saw doctor who said don't try to eat for 24 hrs from start of sickness but try sips of water, i found cola (full fat, lots of sugar) and original lucozade was good in very small quantities.
i would ring midwife or doctor just to check what advice they may have?

Thanks all - managed to get a bit of sleep. Have called NHS direct, just waiting on a call back from them.

If you are having trouble keeping liquids down, try taking small sips at regular intervals. You may also want to try ginger tea or clear soda to help reduce nausea. You should avoid coffee, alcohol, soda, and caffeinated tea. If you have diarrhea, avoid drinking juices because they can make this symptom worse. You can stick to plain food like crackers, cereal, toast, rice, and potatoes. Small amounts of yogurt, bananas, and fresh apples can also help with diarrhea. Don’t force yourself to eat if eating makes you feel nauseated.

Oh rockchick you poor thing Sad

I had this 2 weekends ago & after vomitting every hour through the night i phoned midwife as was worried about dehydration like you. I was admitted for iv fluids. I also have GD so were worried about blood sugars. Really hope you feel better soon, its awful. Have a hug Smile xx

ZingWantsGin · 13/11/2013 07:17

hope you are sleeping now and on the mend

Rockchick1984 · 13/11/2013 08:53

NHS direct have said that the baby will be fine so that's good enough for me, and if I'm no better by tomorrow then go to A&E. Oh, and have sugary drinks as I was nearly fainting when being sick so need to sort my blood sugar out!

Thanks all for your advice Thanks

Warm lemonade is supposed to work wonders for poorly stomachs. When I was having horrendous sickness in the early days the only thing I could keep down was 7up. It was my saviour. I hope you feel better soon and I'm glad the baby is ok x
