Teat steriliser???

Does anybody know if you can buy such a thing as a teat steriliser??
I know you can get them for dummies but I need one just for teats.

Because: when I breast fed my DS (14 yrs ago!) it was unbelievably painful and the only thing that helped me to feed him was to hold a bottle teat over my nipple and feed him through that - he was able to feed without touching my skin (I couldn't get along with nipple shields). Which was fine at home because I could sterilise them in the normal steriliser but couldnt transport them (because no other tub/case would be sterile) so I was thinking if I had a small steriliser for teats I could take it out with me.... if they exist, lol

if you wash and soak a small plastic tub in milton for 2omins it will be sterile. so you could buy some little tupperware pots and sterilise these in your nomal steriliser at home, then take the teats out in them? alternatively you could take a bottle full of milton with teats floating in it?

The teat does need to remain sterile! Your nipple isn't! Sterilising is important for formula feeders because of bacteria in milk power but breast milk has no such risk. Just wash teats very well and transport in clean container. Makes me Angry that people never explain this important difference between BF and FF. Anyway hope things go better for you this time and you have no need of teats!

Milton the tub!!! Of-blooming-course!

In the past I had a steam steriliser and this time I have a microwave one so couldn't use either for a plastic tub because it'd melt it, but Milton would work

You clever people!!

Grin Thanks! xx

OP seriously, pls don't worry about sterilizing the teat. It is 100% not necessary.

StillPukin · 13/11/2013 09:56

Why wouldn't I sterilize the teat? I'd sterilize anything else that went in their mouth?? - apart from me obviously lol

Because sterilisation is ONLY needed to kill dangerous bacteria in formula powder. Babies have other non sterile stuff in their mouths all the time, like dummy's, nipples and fingers. Breast milk itself is sterile and therefore the teat will not come into contain with dangerous bacteria. I'm just trying to save you hassle, of course its your choice. Just wash the teat well and you're good to go!

Sorry to highjack the thread, but if I plan to eBF, I don't need to sterilise bottles either? Just wash them well? It's only after there has been formula in the bottle it needs sterilising? Is that right?

Thanks :)

Bottle teats! Why didn't I think of that? That could have saved me so much heart (and nipple) ache!

StillPukin · 14/11/2013 20:48

Grobags hmm, I hadnt thought of it like that, of course I wont be sterile so why should the teat be... makes sense. I've just been looking online and lots of people agree with you. To be honest, I might still sterilise things at the beginning to make me feel better lol.

Panzee Honestly it was the best piece of advice I was given, I used to carry around a tub with sterilised teats and I'd just hold one against me so that DS could feed through it without actually touching me, otherwise I would've had to have finish feeding so much sooner... I think its a secret ALL mums should share :)

I might have another one just to try that out.
